Giant Bombcast 09-20-2011

Gears of War 3 is out today! So we talk about Gears of War 3. A lot. Turns out, we have no idea what a cog actually is! We're a little more knowledgable about TrackMania 2, Burnout CRASH!, Resident Evil 4, and Renegade Ops, though.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Really tired of Trackmania 2 talk. I have absolutely no interest and yet Jeff proceeds to keep talking about it. Please stop talking about Trackmania 2. Especially if you have to interrupt vinny talking about Castlevania LoS.

Yeah, I've been having problems with Gamefly's availability. I got my 7th game in queue this week. I even put Gears 3 at the top of my list a week in advance so I could definitely get it when I last sent in my game. There are 6 games I've been waiting to play, and week after week I can't get them. Guess I got the bad luck, huh?

Also, all hail Lord Vinny the Wise for seeing through the stupid and unfounded hate on Castlevania Lords of Shadow giant bomb always delivers. There are usually just sighs and crap tossed its way when its referenced on the bombcast. Game is fantastic as long as you arent willing to let a grudge form because it isnt 2d.

Well phew, I'm glad they cut that out then. I'd hate to have more bombcast.
 
(Also, were they not also talking about 'greater fiction stuff' at the very beginning of the bombcast with Gears 3? Was that not the basis for the whole 'cog' image to this podcast?)

I will never understand why anyone thinks Lords of Shadow is not Castlevania-y enough. It has whips, a guy named Belmont, gothic horror atmosphere and light platforming. That's more than the last few 2D Castlevanias have had! Hell, Order of Ecclesia barely had you fighting Dracula at all!

I hope Vinny sticks with Castlevania: LoS until the end. It is almost a 20 hour game...some people consider the game to be a grind at times. I personally never felt that way though.

One of the most overlooked great games of last year. An abundance of love went into developing the game. I just hope the planned sequel(s) don't get cancelled.

Gears 3 didn't look THAT much better then Gears 2. Gears 2 still looks fucking fantastic. It's just that Gears that has a ton more variety and your outside, and you see colors... Like ACTUAL colors. I don't think Gears 1 even had the color yellow anywhere in the whole game.

Thanks Jeff for the tip on GOW3 difficulty. I started on hardcore and am glad I did, it's a bit easier then GOW2 but still a bit of a challenge.

@Nerolus: I will admit that was a pretty bitchy post. It may even be the only one since I'm always gushing at everything the guys put up. Despite not paying anything to be entertained, this is still a way to give feedback to them since they tend to look over stuff to see how people are taking what they're putting out. I believe I am allowed to voice my own opinion whether they hear it or not. Does it make me hate them? Of course not. I will listen anyway. I was simply stating I was tired of the Trackmania talk is all. And as a paying member, I also want nothing but the best from these guys.

While i enjoy the new Castlevania LoS, best ending ever, is being a little too much...I think they are games out there with better finale. Still good game though. I read a story that they were working on a sequel I believe the spanish composer said something about it (forgot his name). One of the developers said he would love to put Alucard on the game. God of War was great but was more of the same, still amazing graphics.

Once again the Giant Bomb staff (at least those who haven't played the game) are genuinely puzzled by the phenomena of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and, more importantly, seem to both misunderstand and misrepresent what these games are all about. The design philosophy of From Software's newer titles should be likened - if not necessarily qualitatively compared - to something like the original Metroid. Nintendo's genre-defining classic emphasized methodical exploration and gradual immersion in an alien game world as well as in some rather unusual gameplay mechanics, and DS does more or less the same thing in the context of a level-based action RPG rather than a side-scrolling platformer.

While it could be argued that those elements in and of themselves don't strictly require a high difficulty and steep learning curve, remarks made during the podcast about "one-hit kills" and "masochism" are inaccurate in so much as they both assume an almost insurmountably high level of difficulty as well as outright cheapness in the design of the game's challenges. As Vinny partially explained, Demon's Souls' difficulty is all about the need to plan ahead, be patient and observant and approach each individual challenge in a careful manner and - as has been said many times before - not being too afraid to fail because failure is inevitable and not the end of the world. Yes, scaring off weak-minded noobs and build credibility with the King's Field veterans (all three of them) does play some role in the developers' master plan, but it's a much smaller part than what's being suggested in this podcast.

One can certainly question From's implementation of some of these design ideas, but misrepresenting Demon's Souls as a game with an abundance of cheap, instant deaths and as being a product "designed for masochists" gets us absolutely nowhere in that analysis.
