Giant Bombcast 11-22-2011

I feel a little mean for saying this yet again, but I really think opening with Vinny's "what you been playing" kills any momentum the guys try to create at the beginning. I enjoy hearing about Vinny's cooking/drinking shenanigans, but he tends to plays alot of older stuff that has been talked about at length previously. I'd much rather open with Brad talking about his latest review or Jeff on where he's been all week. Save Vinny till later so they can hit the good stuff when it's fresh!

@nail1080: That's an awfully elitist and shortsighted view of the problem they were describing in the podcast. I, for example, don't have tons of experience with fighting games. I played some during the SNES era and have toyed around with Tekken and SoulCalibur and most recently have played quite a bit of Super Street Fighter IV, but there are many things about the way those games work on a higher level than just hitting dudes or pulling off basic combos that is so vague and vexingly beneath the surface that I end up getting frustrated. I'm not a beginner, but I'm not advanced enough to win online matches basically ever, and I'd like a trainer in-game that shows common situations for when to use certain techniques or how to go about training and getting better, instead of just a badly-described button combo and a rigid "just do it, I guess" approach. I bought MvC2 on XBLA when it was on sale and would like to have a rudimentary understanding of how those systems work so I could get better, but it's just not there.

What I'm saying is, I've hit a barrier that simply consulting FAQs and watching videos doesn't remedy completely. That's why it's nice that Skullgirls is implementing a mode to help you learn those things. That's nowhere near the same thing as the game being dumbed down or put in an easy mode, and wasn't what anyone was saying should happen.

Oh my god. Oh my god, Patrick. Thank you.  I have been literally waiting for years for someone, anyone, to point this out when the guys use anecdotal evidence to make a statement about how well a game is doing.  This is extremely silly for a multitude of reasons(The crowd associated with you is comprised of major game enthusiasts with stable incomes, your "sample group" is like a mote of dust in a goddamn beach etc. etc.). Many, many silly things have been said throughout the years.

yeah but my point is that after watching tutorial videos online or reading FAQS,if you still cannot do whatever combo or cancel you want to know how to pull of, it simply means you do not have the skills to do it, and it's not something to be ashamed of as these are very complex button combos in the first place. Crying more for 100s of other ways of them showing you how to do it isn't going to stop you from sucking.

There's stuff even the best FAQ or video online can't do well - like telling me what I'm doing wrong, if my timing is too early or late, or being able to tell what's going on in a specific situation which is why a decent tutorial would be very valuable. It has nothing to do with just sucking at the game...it's that all the other ways are inadequate for somebody to really cut their teeth on fighting games and I don't feel like I've broken through the threshold of understanding all the basics well enough for the online stuff to even make sense to me half the time.

Also, in what world is digging through tons of esoteric fan sites and YouTube videos an acceptable replacement for in-game instructions? Why are we even sort of okay with this? The only game I kind of understood that with was Dark Souls and the entire point of that game (for the most part anyway) was to be vague and cryptic. I don't think that's Street Fighter's MO.

I've played almost 30 hours of Skyrim on PC over the last week and I haven't had ANY problems with glitches, bugs or straight-up crashes. I'm really impressed. And I should also add that I dropped quite a few mods in there, like the Large Address Aware workaround, Improved Magicka and a bunch of HD textures.

So when would you expect to see NASsassins Creed?

It sounds to me like you're shit at fighting games and no matter how detailed the tutorial is in a game I doubt you'd be able to get any good at games like SF. I've watched most of The Captains, and I find it hard to watch because of William Shatner. His way of interviewing and talking to these people is just super weird, and he always has to interject his own past into the conversation.

"Well, how did you get started acting? Let me tell you how I got started acting."

Whichever newspaper wrote that The Captains is basically a film about William Shatner wasn't wrong. Also, I actually bought it on DVD and then it ended up on Netflix, so that's what I get for flirting with physical media for once.

The Saints Row 3 talk baffles me. GOTY contender? Shit is garbage (especially the driving). Already pining for GTA V after playing it.

I don't think people should have to go to another website ... I mean paid members (such as you and me) pay to support this website, but regardless of that, if you don't like something you have every right to say it sucks. By that logic no game reviewed on Giant Bomb should get less than a two-star review or you could just say "don't like it, don't play it/write about it".

Patrick isn't a bad guy but listening to him say "fuck that magazine" because of his sloppy reporting on the Metal Gear Soild 5 story is just juvenile. Their journalist got the story, got the quotes and asked about MGS5... OTHER websites reported it as "HERE COMES A NEW MGS" and without fact checking so did Patrick. Own up to it. Stop acting like it's everyone else's fault. That and his blog posts in the news section about "should I play Skyrim?" or "This is how I played LA Noire, how cool yeah?" is annoying. This isn't Kotaku.

Hope this doesn't seem like a personal attack ... but don't call people dicks. We're not dicks. He's probably a good guy ... but his writing and reporting skills leave a lot to be desired.

I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet, but the first Thanksgiving was actually in Virginia (1619). Yes, I'm a rabid history buff and from Virginia.

Anybody know if there is gonna be a new Bombcast today? Just not sure because of the short week and all... also, the I Love Mondays wasn't particularly informative. It did, however, make me go straight to Youtube and watch videos of people eating turkey sandwiches.

Between the "executable" talk and Jeff's delivery of "You FUCKFACE!" I have to say this was one of the best 'casts in a long time. High energy, hilarious chatter, though I DID miss Vinny. Good thing he was on the Whiskey Media Radio Show.
