Giant Bombcast 12-14-2010

We match three with PopCap's own Jeff Green, who joins us for this week's discussions of adult-themed Bejeweled, our Doritos Game of the Year, Andy Serkis' one-man show, inventing ancient artifacts for Uncharted 3, and much more!

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

What the fuck is Ryan's problem with the Nintendo segment? Is it really that much of a chore to do it every week that you would get rid of it even though it's the funniest part of the show?

That was a great one. This, combined with This American Life and Screened Door, just made for a really great first half of work.

Opinions. For me it's the most superflous part of the show.

It was okay this week because it was different but usually that loud screaming really bothers me.

Well, obviously the staff enjoys it, and from what I've seen most listeners enjoy it, so I think it should stay.

You don't know what every listener thinks.

Frankly, it got old. The texts themselves are not really funny and the screaming is always the same. Funny once or twice, but not anymore.

Would love to hear a podcast on gaming coverage, the machinations and so on. It is so awesome to learn about the great and scummy part of the gaming press business. Loved the talk on Game Informer.

@CptBedlam: You clearly don't understand that it's irrelevant whether he actually likes the segment or not. His squirming against it only makes it that much funnier.

I never played Bayonetta and just forgot about it.  So I just ordered it.

I would dearly miss the Wii/DSiware section if you cut it.
 Some of the funniest moments in Bombcast history came from your readings of those discriptions.

@528seven:

I think it is because WiiWare and the DS downloadables are usually just bullshit games that 99% of the population gives a damn about.

Personally I think it is hilarious that, like Game Room, a really stupid idea/game gets some of the best laughs and causes some of the most controversy.

As long as they continue to do funny shit with this segment (and Game Room for that matter) I have zero issue with this type of overall nonsense.

What's weird is, stuff like this is what I like (along with the quick looks) but hate the actual "reviews" section of the site.

Sorry, but I had to to skip the whole Nintendo segment this week.  It's just not for me.  I would prefer if Ryan did eliminate it all together and they just do emails for longer.  Emails are often my favorite part of the show and it is also way to short most of the time.

I did not, that is your interpretation. I said "from what I've seen", which I thought would communicate that I was generalizing based on the comments I had read for and against the segment.

 Full disclosure: I've not played two seconds of BioShock 2, so everything following is based on what was said in Bombcasts and reviews on this site. Take with as much salt as you'd like.

I know you've gone around in circles a bit, but I'm still a bit perplexed by your assertion that the Giant Bomb guys are "pandering" to anyone because they had a "Good not great" reaction to the game. As others have pointed out, all of them have at least played enough of the game to have a basic idea of what it is trying to do, and for the most part decided it wasn't compelling enough to finish. Even if their opinion is in sync with the majority of other outlets out there (and the influence of other game journalists' opinions is a different topic), I don't doubt that they came to that opinion independently.

If anything, Brad and Vinny's enthusiasm for Minerva's Den seems to drive the point home for this. At some point you said "I guess if the rest of the game had been as good as that piece of DLC, the game would have been received better." Well...yeah. That's part of why I think Brad was caught by surprise by it, that the DLC was such an excellent story (I believe Brad said it was THE best story told in a BioShock game yet, or at least the best characters) that it was worthwhile playing through, even if you didn't finish the core game. This, despite not being grabbed by the main game. Personally, the idea they were talking about of a game of possibly loosely connected short stories all set in the same location sounds fascinating with me, especially if the material is as laudable as this one piece apparently is.

Finally, I don't get your opinion that the name "BioShock 2" is what set them off. If this was called "BioShock: Whatever", but was the exact same game as came out, do you really believe that the experience they had would have been that much more positive? Keep in mind that video games are one of the few mediums where sequels regularly excel their predecessor. Last year, Uncharted 2 blew them away; similarly, Mass Effect 2 this year is a front runner for GotY awards. The name is incidental to the fact that the game itself didn't leaving a lasting impression on any of them, including Jeff who DID play the whole game. Vice versa, the reason that people are excited about BioShock: Infinite isn't because its name doesn't have a number in it, but because it looks substantially different from the first game, the main point where I feel that Jeff as reviewer of the game felt BioShock 2 failed to deliver, refining the parts of the game that were really incidental to what made the original such a shocking (no pun intended) experience.

Jeff reading Nintendo downloads sounds like the RedLetterMedia guy who reviews the Star Wars movies on YouTube.

Also, I don't think Vinny's issues with WoW are that it's 6 years old now, it's just an MMO. Even the latest MMOs have NPCs standing around, activating scripts and having clunky animations. As someone who started playing WoW a mere 3 months ago, I'm still very impressed how polished and fully featured the game still is and the effort they put into updating it.

@HubrisRanger:  1. It's pandering because they're journalists and they've only played so little of the game (except Jeff, but he recently joined the Levine wagon. His wagon features BioShock 2 spite). Think of it like this. They're taking the shortcut to an opinion. One that'll keep them popular.

2. Surprise! BioShock 2 is a series of short stories in Rapture. Kinda makes what they said to be even more dumb and misinformed, huh.

3. This goes back at least a couple of months ago where they did the same thing; Brad says he's never played any of the game and then proceeds to criticise it, all the while Jeff acts like a deer caught in headlights.

4. The name thing relates more to the general reaction to Infinity, not anything they've said. Irrational/Levine fanboys. etc.

They've done this with other games before, and will probably continue to. It's disappointing. That's all.

Weakest Bombcast yet. No direction, no real issue to talk about, the guest was there (that's all I really have to say about him) , they were just farting around. Ohh well, at least Demon's Souls helped to ignore most of it.

Well there was a nuke, after checking what happens he actually flies the nuke away from the city and drops it in the ocean, so the city is there and still infected, even I didn't remember that bit, but I did remember him using a crow to reconstruct his face at the end.

@sofacitysweetheart:

I want to interject on this argument to add a third party opinion. I would also like to state I've played barely any Bioshock and have never touched Bioshock 2. What I say here is based on what I've heard from several sources. Now from what I've heard of Bioshock 2 I've heard it's a good game, but it is not better than Bioshock. I've heard that it just does no do enough with the universe that has been established to really draw people in. Now I've heard some opinions say it was a great game, but those people also said it is mainly because of their love for the original Bioshock that made them like Bioshock 2. Now when it comes to Giant Bomb's opinions on the game, Jeff has all the right in the world to reflect upon his previous opinion and change it up. I doubt you've never played a game or watched a movie and then changed your opinion on that several months later because you've had time to think about it. Now pandering, from my experience with Giant Bomb they are not at all those kind of people. I've heard them pan games that everyone else love and the advantage to having several different employees that share different opinions is that we'll either get agreement or debate. You saying they're a Levine fanboy? That is stupid thinking that because they like a developer that they would change their opinion of a game. I consider myself a Sonic fanboy but I rarely agree with all the other Sonic fanboys you see.

Now this is just my opinion, but it seems more like they don't like a game you like and that just gets to you. You're opinions could be completely true but just because people share a different opinion than you does not make it right to try to impose your own opinions on everyone else and try to turn us against the Giant Bomb guys. I'm not trying to be insulting, I just wanted to get my opinion out there.
