As a small tip you should start definitely pumping points into small arms and just shooting stuff with pistols. Unarmed is fine for the very beginning of the game but once you start venturing forth it is not great unless you are doing a very specific character build for it. Melee is somewhat more viable in the beginning. There are unarmed weapons that can make it a fun class but you need a large health pool, strong armor and said weapons which are found in the latter half of your adventure.

Although technically the map is wide open. If you know where to go you can even go to the very last area of the game as long as you save scum and avoid patrols. I guess thats part of the beauty of this game.

But yah you need to start investing in some skill for ranged weapons, in this case small arms is a good bet as it offers a really wide variety of weaponry both early, mid and late game. Ammo stops being an issue as you start killing enemies with guns as you just loot their bodies. Soon you'll be shooting molerats with sniper rifles without a care in the world.

Just want to throw another voice behind "Go small arms, stay away from melee/unarmed". Not enough str for melee/unarmed, but small arms covers a wide selection of weapons for all ranges: Pistols, smgs, shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles.

High perception+high sneak makes for a nice sneak sniper built: Get in close and open combat with a surprise shot to the eyes with very high chance to hit, often ends up 1-shotting enemies without triggering others in the area.

Same advice for trying to disarm enemies, particularly animal types: Trying to take out limbs is usually a waste of time, go for the eyes to blind them. Eyes might be harder to hit, but they are only one target and they are easier to crit so you usually only need to hit them once to cripple them.

ON the topics of broken NPCs, god damn Ian in Fallout 1. He would even burst fire an SMG at an enemy right next to you and blow you to pieces, or stand in a doorway to a tiny room and trap you forever. Good times.

Adding another voice for small arms. In the first Fallout, I usually went small arms for the beginning/mid-game and then energy weapons for the end game.

I have not played 2, but in the original, melee is eventually going to be a bad way to play.

I actually always went heavy into unarmed at first, then went into small guns as I went. Having good unarmed was so useful during the first half of the game (and I always become a prizefighter).

@mikeissogroovy: I had to relisten to this bit a few times because I thought he said "wizard"

The Den is great, it's where the game starts to show its true nature where I feel Klamath is quite flat and empty.

Also, a lot of people seem keen for Ben to have a purely optimal build for this game, which is frustrating. His build is perfectly fine, and will be kinda fun to see how he does.

Honestly just thank you Ben for playing this, I love 3 and NV, have tried briefly to do 1 and 2 but I did not know that 2 had gameplay after the "tutorial" because I never got out of the temple. So this is wild fresh air to me.

This is great, I have also always wanted to go back to these. I got brought on board by 3 and won over by New Vegas, but struggled to get going in these older ones. I like Ben's approach here too, listening for tips but making his own way. Except for the part where he almost didn't reload after getting caught stealing, my inner save scummer started hyperventilating.

Yeah for sure, it felt strange at first not following a typical build but it's making for a more interesting playthrough. Am really enjoying this series so far.

I dunno why, but this video does not have the Fallout 2 tag on it -- I couldn't find it from the Fallout 2 page, but all other parts of the series do have those tags.
