Very surprised Brad hasn't encountered Mr. Mime in the past 20 years, or any non animal like Pokemon.
I know Giant Bomb doesn't have the biggest Pokemon fans, but it's still odd hearing them talk about features in Let's Go like they're new to the franchise; such as rideable Pokemon or HMs not taking up attack slots.

I think the whole "anime or not" thing is entirely based around who the creative leads are. Japanese? Then you've got anime. Anyone else? Then it's not. Otherwise you gotta take a long hard look at stuff like Duck Tales and Batman TAS and realize just how much of that was entirely made by anime studios(and then farmed out to Koreans, natch).

Someone from America trying to emulate a more "anime" look doesn't actually count for much. Like if you've watched some anime, and then you watch Korra or Totally Spies or whatever, you can tell that stuff doesn't move like anime even if it's got superficial similarities and is in many cases literally animated by anime studios. Add on to that the writing(I used to watch Avatar The Last Airbender to get a break from anime tropes and get something more American), and there's not much to the similarities.

On a personal level too, as an illustrator, I'd be very embarrassed if I started saying my drawings were in fact anime or manga just 'cause they're in some way influenced by that stuff. It's like the difference between being actually japanese and being a big weeb.

As for which video game franchise I'd like to see get an anime or cartoon adaptation? One of the Korra or Last Airbender dudes, I forget whom, posted concept art they'd done for a Street Fighter pitch to Capcom. I want that. That'd be awesome.

Real funny podcast this week, btw.

Jeff should crack open the cheats in red dead 2. They turn it into the game he wants. More arcade less simulation. Unlimited dead eye...max stats max horse love max money. Stamina max. Just play it as a game less lifestyle which i heard is a big complkaint for people with limited time ie over 40 and kinda annoyed that their game is taking up their limited time with its bloat. Note i think the bloat is good but this is just so jeff can skip it. Like he did with cracking open shadows of war when he had no fun unlocking the main game. Like dark souls 3 with an easy mode. less grind more gameplay.

Interesting to hear them say that you're quite fragile in hitman. I felt like that was the case for the first few months of Hitman, but then they did a balance change and suddenly you could run your way out of most shootouts without dying it felt like.

I have no idea why you're having those tracking issues but I work in VR stuff and PSVR is pretty much the most comfortable and it has the best image quality of all the PC headsets. It has a lower resolution but there's no god rays and you don't see Fresnel rings in the image.

The crew balk at the pricing structure of Artifact, but it's quite similar to the one they have used in Magic: The Gathering Online for 16 years. In the case of MTGO, the online version is seen to be almost equivalent to the paper version of the game. Online players can earn points that will let them be able to compete in pro tournaments IRL. MTGO doesn't allow players to directly cash out of the system. Instead, if you manage to collect 1 of each card in a set through opening boosters either received as prizes or as part of a draft (or more commonly, trade tickets to a trade bot for the cards), you can pay Wizards of the Coast $25 + S&H and they will remove the cards from your account and send you the physical copies which in turn you sell on the secondary market.

@kissthedevil: how do we download it now? Used to autoplay last week and we'd have to then select the download option but I can't even see that now.

Seems that pressing on any of the non-apple options just plays the audio. No option to download at all. Sweet!

On the phone using chrome after the site upgrade I'd have to click on "more options", change the slider to premium and then if I held down on the circle download button, chrome would pop up a dialogue box asking what I wanted to do with the link and I'd press download link. I used this as recently as last Friday to download the beastcast.

But that doesn't work on this episode of the bombcast and I went back to try to download the last week's beastcast to see if it would work it didn't work there anymore either.

I like downloading it to play in my own player as I drive to work and my car audio system will only pause and resume and fast forward or rewind properly if I use the player in my phone and not through chrome.

Also I'm not a fan of having to click into more options and play around with buttons there. Firstly it took me a while the other week to work out changing the star was how you got the premium feed as there was no explanation on what the buttons did. I feel like for premium subscribers it should default to premium or just make a different page for premium like it used to be.

There's a very short part in the french artist storyline, where you basically do nothing else except punch a guy, so in case the game hitched and skipped that whole part, you didn't miss anything, Ben.

Also it sounds like they should get a boxing ring for Brad and Jeff, once it's time to discuss RDR2 during GOTY. Gonna get heated!

It’s mind boggling to me that Brad prefers to spend his time with 76 but completely dismisses Pokemon lets go, a complete game with a new twist for the franchise. And Brad is not solo on this and that’s what frustrates me.

Thanks jan for letting me know I have a pokeball to buy, cause that auto spin sure looks attractive

@terjay: they've spent plenty of time using it, and that's the experience they came to. I'm glad it works for you but you shouldn't dismiss any critical opinions of your favourite headset. VR especially is still early and many people experience different technical and physiological issues e.g. motion sickness.

So I agree that Fallout76 isn’t the best upgrade in the Fallout Franchise but it’s still more Fallout and fairly good Fallout from what I’ve played so far.

They act like it’s a burning pile of shit when I would say it’s maybe disappointing but also something that I believe will continue to age well with more updates and added content. The gameplay is still fun and the world is enjoyable to explore. Maybe wait til it goes on sale soon and try it out.

I think it will be like No Mans Sky in the sense that in a year from now people will be jumping back in with all this added content.

MTGO doesn't allow players to directly cash out of the system. Everything after your first sentence are interesting facts, but not relevant to a comparison with Artifact. Artifact doesn't have a paper version of the game it is emulating, doesn't have an IRL tournament scene that it interacts with, and doesn't let you turn digital cards into real cards (though I guess the marketplace in Artifact will let you sell cards). I primarily played Magic back in the 2000s, and MTGO is a neat service, but I just don't think it's relevant to the discussion.

I see what you're saying about it being a pricing structure that has been used before, but that doesn't necessarily justify it for Artifact. MTGO is the way it is because it's an extension of Magic's existing business practices but in digital form, and being 15+ years old, it predates the usual F2P model. Based on my time in the MtG community and the video game community, MTGO was never really presented as a way to bring in new players from the video game community, and just seemed like a digital version of MtG for committed Magic players who didn't want to bother owning boxes and boxes of physical cards anymore.

So "MTGO did it" isn't a meaningful precedent for anyone in the video game community because they don't know what MTGO is and they don't care. Artifact is going to be compared to Hearthstone, Gwent, MtG Arena, etc., since those are the digital card games actively marketed at the video game community. In that field of competitors, the monetary buy-in for Artifact is pretty steep. Maybe there are marketplace reasons they couldn't just make the Artifact client cost $0 (I guess it would just flood the marketplace with the cards you get when you first start the game), but I really would've liked the client to be like $5 at most, when all future cards you obtain will be from packs you buy for $2 or individual cards bought from the marketplace. Sure, you get a lot of cards when you first start Artifact, but charging $20 just to try it out is asking a little much of consumers; it would be like launching a MOBA that cost $30 when League of Legends and Dota 2 (and Heroes of the Storm) are all F2P.

I genuinely think Artifact looks fun as hell to play, but I think it might have a hard time finding a big playerbase when it costs so much to participate in compared to its very well known competitors.

Concerning that email about what game should have an animated series... The emailer said Valkyria Chronicles would be a good choice for one.

Sega agrees because the first Valkyria Chronicles got an anime adaptation back in 2009. I don't think it ever got licensed for a western release though.

Some thoughts from a current Fallout 76 player

I don't want to defend 76 because it doesn't deserve it. But frankly, I don't understand why everyone is so hung up on the lack of NPCs and story, it's a online survival game. The point of it is just to explore and build stuff and be immersed, that was always the pitch and I'm unsure as to how or why people were so confused, that's all survival games ever were.

In my opinion the real problem with 76 is something else, because Jeff in some ways is right, I think Ben was a little too Bandwagon'ish about it. Anyway, the problem with 76 is that it's incredibly paranoid about griefing so it's trying to be "safe casual survival', which results in a frustrating middling mess. There is an audience out there having fun, it's the audience that want to screw around and co-op and are terrified of online interaction beyond Co-op, you can browse the reddit, you'll see posts with them saying how much they love that PVPing is discouraged and they just hang out with friends, it's everywhere, these are the people loving 76.

I feel like if they were going to just scrap the story, bethesda should have gone all the way with this, true survival, open world PVP across the board without this consensual shit, they should have had it so if you die you drop a percentage or all of your gear, currently you only drop junk even if killed by players, so death has zero consequence unless you're lugging around a ton of junk which is no great loss anyhow.

If someone shoots you and you do shoot back, the damage they do may as well be 0, the odds of them ever killing you unless you hit them are very low, it's just not a thing you have to worry about, they'd have to hit you after a monster got you to 1hp or something.

Bethesda did me a favor by getting rid of the NPCs because I think since Oblivion, Bethesda's writing and creativity has been mediocre to average at best, so in my mind, 76 getting rid of that was like a "Yes, if you can't do it right don't do it at all" moment.

But now, as someone who loves the entirety of Morrowind, as someone who loves immersion and has a soft spot for these Janky bethesda open world games despite how shit I think they are on the story front. I'm struggling to find fun in 76 because it doesn't lean in any direction, it really needs to be a fully fledged online survival game with bigger camp building and proper lawlessness in the world where players make their own rules up and band together, literally everything Fallout's universe represents, not this fake happy fun-time co-op shit for everyone afraid online interaction.

It would be so easy to change 2-3 settings and entirely change the stakes of the game and how it's played, it would breath life into it.

Apparently player factions and new PVP stuff is coming, you guys are saying the game is barren but there is alot of detail out in that world, I know it's not your thing to sit around and enjoy the atmosphere as it's entirely the opposite of "Spending time wisely" But there's stuff there, it's just the real issue is Bethesda wants their cake and eat it too and instead are bumming out everyone who wants an ounce of Risk VS Reward gameplay in a Bethesda open world game.

EDIT: As for player encounters, I mean you can see players on the map. I don't deliberately seek people out but I usually encounter 1-3 every hour or so unless I'm deliberately out of the way.

In regards to Fallout 76 I'd say that if you really enjoy the exploration aspect of previous Fallout games than you'd probably enjoy FO76. I was never really big on NPC interaction in Bethesda games anyway.

The main gameplay loop is just the same as it was in any other Fallout game. Explore -> Kill Stuff -> Collect Junk -> Repeat. It's just instead of a person giving you the quest it's a robot or a terminal or a holotape.

@redhotchilimist: where would attack on titan fall in this. That seems like berserk in that its anime but made for the lense of a western no nonsense audience. No cartoony reactions friend ship wins super beams etc.

It's still anime. You're absolutely right that Attack on Titan and Berserk are two common favorites for people outside of Japan, and a big part of that is falling more in line with common American tropes. More violence, less sexy teasy stuff, non-Japanese names, settings that don't scream Japanese culture etc. Death Note, Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, Monster, most Ghibli movies and others are common recommendations for people that "don't like anime" because they are so internationally approachable.

And of course there's stuff like Naruto or My Hero Academia, concepts that are just ninja/superhero + school, concepts anyone anywhere can get at a glance. But that doesn't make them not anime, it just makes them anime that intentionally or not hit on tropes and values that don't scare away international non-anime fans. Despite being about superheroes (and being very inspired by specific western comic book characters), My Hero Academia follows standard shonen fighting tropes to a T. Berserk might not have any friendship beams(though it does have its cartoony reactions), but I think it's pretty easy to tell that it isn't western animation just from looking at it. Maybe this is easier to see for someone who's who's studied a little animation, but I think the difference is overwhelming. The ways something western moves versus the ways something Japanese moves, even when it's inspired by anime. Castlevania and FMA might share some similarities in style, everything's just drawings after all. If you can get the same animator to animate for you, or imitate his work well enough, you'll look superficially like the same. But even then I don't think it looks interchangable. And then all the writing, language, tropes, preferences and culture stuff is just on top of that difference in directing, animation style, comic book format etc.

Like, take Dark Souls, or maybe Demon's Souls, or Dragon's Dogma. You can tell those are Japanese games even if they're set in a wester medieval fantasy setting, right? They might base their game on old western fantasy and mythological tropes, but I don't think anyone would confuse those games for Skyrim, Dragon Age Inquisition, the Witcher 3 or Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Even when using the same tropes and settings, it results in something different because of the local culture, because of localization, all that jazz. That's the same for Witcher 3 compared to Dragon Age Inquisition, too, even if they share CRPG roots. It's the whole Polish vs Canadian thing.

Uh this became a lot longer than I meant it to but yeah, AoT is still anime in my book lol

Let me be clear, this is my take. I know people that watch way more anime than me and couldn't give two shits if people want to call Voltron or W.I.T.C.H. anime. Even if you don't think it's technically true, calling something "anime" is a quick shorthand for "inspired by some anime"

A while back my brother was looking through my game collection looking for something to borrow. I asked if he wanted to try Fallout 3 and he said 'Is that the game where you travel around putting stuff in your pockets?' I feel like this is a fairly apt description of Fallout games and Fallout 76 is no exception.

The criticism about it being broken is warranted but its still a lot of fun, and there is a ton to do but you have to explore and find it.
