I'm happy that Ben lilkes Disco Elysium! If he's interested in checking more of that style of game out, I would recommend Torment: Tides of Numenara. It came out in 2016 and is a spiritual sequel to Planescape: Torment. The writing is a lot wordier, but it goes to some cool places. Planescape is also very good but it's also pretty dated, especially the combat system. The writing does hold up though!

Excited to hear the Disco talk, missed the show earlier today and committing the cardinal sin of commenting before I've listened.

Man, nice to see Yaddle has apparently found videogame podcast relevance once again after the infamous Yaddle milk incident on GFW Radio years back.

Gumby has the Weirdest episode of a show I ever saw.

Gumby has to save poke and goo from a space witch in the middle of a pentagram in a space ship. I still have a hard time believing this was a episode of a show but it happened,

Ben, I really hope you (and anyone else interested) get a chance to read this post and can try some of these great old school PC RPGs that you might have missed and if anything please read this guide to get the best information about the genre.

The site is RPGcodex.net so they are a pretty good resource! They even say Planescape Torment is the best CRPG.

Top 70 PC RPGs of all time

You guys were right the first time CRPG means computer role playing game, not classic. It only has entered the lexicon RECENTLY since most RPGS are basically CRPGs. Before we only had tabletop RPGs so they called them CRPGs and that is what the isometric style of RPGs were initially called because they were almost ALWAYS on computers up until recently, that is where the confusion comes from most likely. These aren't classic RPGs, they are computer role playing games.

Here is straight from google and wikipedia says the same thing. CRPG is short for computer role playing game and is a specific genre of gaming. It came about to describe role playing game games that were adapted from the table top pen and paper style to run on computers. The earliest of CRPG's were game such as Altima, Wasteland and Might and Magic.

I can say this with full conviction because I've been sitting on a computer playing role playing games on it for over 25 years now and love love love CRPGs.

Planescape Torment and Arcanum are probably two of the most highly beloved CRPGs of all time. Fallout 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2. If you haven't played Vampire Bloodlines though I really recommend playing that, it is a first person shooter but they have the sequel coming out finally and you may really like the fact that different styles of play open up ENTIRE new play styles. I don't know how it has aged though but am excited for the sequel. Of course if you are a Star Wars fan people will point you towards playing KOTOR but I was never a huge fan of the KOTOR franchise.

If I had to recommend any CRPG it would be Planescape Torment - the writing in that game is spectacular and it has some very interesting characters.

If I would say in the last 20 years though I really really have been a huge fan of Divinity Original Sin. If you missed that one I really recommend it. The sequel not so much.

@bladeofcreation: Nice I didn't know they were doing one I will have to check it out. I am excited they are the ones to be making the new Baldur's Gate. Baldur's Gate isn't my favorite CRPG but if anyone can make a good one of these it is Larian Studios.

Can't stress enough how good Divinity Original Sin is though. It is even COOP for people who wanna play with a friend. I think I might need to replay that game after talking about CRPGs, it was so good!

I will say there are a few problems with Disco Elysium that one of "i wonder what happens if you do X" questions they brought up here reminded me of. Unless they have since patched it, do not try and just pass time. Specifically on day 2 at least there was, at the time I played it, a point in the game where you can be unable to progress.

When you reach the 2 or 3 am spot, as far as I am aware time just ceases to flow. You can't just read a book until dawn. If you do reach this point and need a work-around, you can fiddle with your save file and give your what you need in order to advance to the next day (I am trying to remain as spoiler free as i can).

Likewise a word of warning to anyone playing the game. There is one part near the very end of the game which gates off access to the area you'd go to start the end-game which can only be accessed as far as I can tell by passing a fairly high shivers check. There are a lot of ways you can earn a re-roll, and a lot of quests you can do to gain bonuses for this check (by completing side-quests in the area its in). but ultimately it still comes down to not being able to proceed until that shivers check is passed.

With the character I played, since I had my physicality at a 1, I found myself having to save-scum and just re-roll the check until I finally passed it.

Those two things were a bit of a downer, but forgivable for me given everything else I think the game did right. Just beware anyone who plays it, it really is the developers first game and it shows in some places!

The moon isn't going to crash in to the planet in outer wilds - the star is going supernova.

You mean how it has a great world and setting but is kinda a bummer to actually play and the checkpoints are infuriating? I think all but Jeff are going to be on this side.

Ben just experienced his first crpg high and now is searching for other crpgs to get high off. Little does he know, he just played the best crpg ever and every other crpg pales in comparison to disco Elysium!

You just can't go back to old crpgs anymore, planescape torment just isn't good enough after disco Elysium!

Also very impressed with Ben talking about disco Elysium in depth. He seemed very passionate about it and others were open minded on it enough that it might sneak into goty talks somewhere if Ben pushes for it.

@brad The outer wilds does have shortcuts like you mentioned (I knew exactly which underground bit you were talking about) but like the rest of the game - they are not signposted and some of them are very pretty well hidden. If you feel on the verge of quitting like Jeff did, don't be too proud to look at a guide.

The final run were you are supposed to put together everything you have discovered and get the "ending" is the only real time dependent bit of the game.

Also the ending pretty underwhelming IMO.

@alternate: I personally agreed with Jeff. I loved everything about it but the map from start to finish. I also felt like the Beast crew for the most part liked it more than it seemed Brad did...but who knows, though. Brad can be quite coy this time of year. It was just the impression I got.

@sethmode: There are enough people on the goty podcasts now that at least one person if going to hate on a game you love (maybe all of them will). If you can just let it go and accept opinions differ you will enjoy the ride a lot more. At the end of the day none of it really matters. That said, they did Witcher 3 real dirty :)

@alternate: Oh, don't get me wrong...it is 100% in good fun. More of a "Oh Jesus, not destiny in thetop 10 what is hapoening!?" kind of way, not in a, "I'm now going to stew and be bitter on the internet" kind of way. It's fun to listen to them debate the stuff, and part of the fun is feeling that moment where my opinion clashes with one of theirs and I want to call them crazy.

I've always found it fun and part of the experience to feel that way...it's only an issue when people stay genuinely salty or are jerks to the crew about their opinions or how they express them.

Slit the plastic on a package of Peeps and let them sit a few weeks, and hope the ants don't find them, then they get nice and stiff, much better than soft Peeps.

If you guys think "Resi" is bad, the common shorthand for Street Fighter in Japanese is "suto, " which when pronounced at full speed basically just sounds like you started saying "Street" but suddenly stopped before getting to the R.
