They should either remaster the original Nier, or commit to the PS5 being backwards compatible with PS3 games and include original Nier in whatever weird licensing agreement they need for that. I'll accept either.

I can confirm that if you cancel Stadia, it'll last until the subscription ends.... I was willing to take that risk.

@brad: Have you considered not getting a wallet at all?

I've used one of these card holders for the past couple years and I like it a lot more. It's got a super small form factor and has a nice action when slotting or removing cards.

About GeForce NOW...

I don't know if I live pretty close to one of their datacenters or what, but the lag was imperceptible. I launched Destiny 2, expecting it to be "maybe playable" with gamepad, and "absolutely unplayable" with mouse and keyboard, but it was actually comparable to playing locally with vsync on (the audio felt ever-so-slightly late, but I'm not sure if it was the stream or the game).

I also tried Stellaris since even the slightest lag on mouse cursor can be a deal breaker on mouse-driven games, but I noticed that the cursor was actually drawn locally, even though the cursor had custom bitmap (not sure if the games have to be specially coded for it, or all games with hardware cursors go through the same hooks). In any case, the lag was even less of an issue with Stellaris. I actually had to double check to make sure it wasn't running from my local install.

I heard testimonials about Stadia so I knew that the streaming tech was improving, but I kind of put it in the same mental bucket as self-driving cars (as in, it's ever so encroaching but never quite there). I never expected to not be able to tell streaming apart from running games locally. As a person who still buys physical games and DRM-free games from GOG (whenever possible), I don't think I felt more dread looking at a piece of technology.

Ministry of Broadcast sounds pretty interesting from what Jeff described. I'm pretty sure it's coming to the Switch too, I'm going to wait to get it on that so I can play it on the go. :)

Wonderful 101 is one of the most innovative, strange, dense, and long action games to come out in the past decade. It's really something else. I never am able to get far in it because unlike Bayonetta it's long and very difficult to jump back into due to the insane amount of complexity -- so complex, I'm not sure how well it will play without the Wii U tablet. Will be interesting to see. I'm a bit skeptical it will be the definitive version. This makes me want to go back and play it on Wii U though. One of those games I always start, stop at the same exact point and never play again. Granted, that's partly because it's on Wii U.

I clicked on a Ridge wallet ad and Google started serving me Top Ten videos and channels of people dedicated to reviewing just wallets. Also the Hot Wheels racing videos are something I was suckered into clicking on, and it looks like a lot of effort is put into the cinematography and sound design of those videos. The one I watched had an elaborate track with realistic camera angles, realistic rally car sound effects and full commentary for each car.

I’m far from being a Nier evangelist but the first Nier is actually very playable by today’s standards in terms of raw gameplay. It handles a little weirder than you’d expect of a third person action adventure these days but I would argue it is at times a lot more interesting to play than Automata because they vary it up quite a bit and play with the perspective in ways that I was disappointed Automata didn’t expand on with its newer tech.

That said it IS rough in terms of repetitive goals, back tracking and the overall structure. Great NG+ reveal though.

Edit: oh and if you are sensitive to a very 90’s design of depicting women and oh I don’t know...gender, then there might be some hard to swallow stuff in there.

Really hard to listen to these when Jason is on. Always talking over people and mumbling under other people while they’re speaking. Love the podcast but it’s much more coherent on weeks when he’s not in the room.

I feel like you don't need to have even seen a Purge movie to know the real point of a Purge is to wipe out poor people. It's not so far-fetched anymore.

I really like how they're starting the Bombcasts with more banter like they used to do and Jeff is bringing back the classic energy drink reviews.

Also, we need even more Jeff and Jan interactions, they're always great. Would love to hear an Aftermath with just the two of them.

Everyone should checkout Waypoints podcasts where they review every Purge movie. The Purge movies aren't anything groundbreaking but they are a lot better than I think people would expect. Solid 7/10 films for the most part.

I don't think Hello Kitty is wearing a costume. It's like that PBS Kids show Arthur where the characters are stylized with animal features, but represent humans.

@duckyofalarcon: Yeah, I remember skimming those podcasts, and it was decently entertaining. The Bombcast discussion of The Purge did seem to completely miss the element where all rich people are generally safe in safe houses somewhere (unless they’re rich people who are political enemies of the ruling elite). So the movies are indirectly about class violence, in the sense that the ruling elite establish the Purge to turn the poor on each other. I honestly can’t tell if the light politics themes are there on purpose or if the writers kinda just blundered into them while making their psycho murder movie and it happens to fit.

Austin (I think) points out that if it were just about “all crime is legal, no class bias here” then they would make a movie about some intricately plotted Ocean’s 11 heist that as long as they complete it in time would be completely legal, but the movies don’t seem concerned with doing anything like that.

I am one of those 9. I fell for the original Nier for the story, music, and world. A flawed masterpiece in my heart. I'd love a remake of that modernized a bit. More would understand some of the references in Automata including the secret room.

I'm reading the story from the L. A. Times that broke the supposed Hello Kitty news, and I'm not sure the popular interpretation is correct. Here's the relevant bit from the woman setting up the Hello Kitty exhibit:

When Yano was preparing her written texts for the exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum, she says she described Hello Kitty as a cat. “I was corrected — very firmly,” she says. “That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”

I don't think by "she is a little girl" (and note that it's the curator paraphrasing, not a direct quote from Sanrio, so there may be context lost here) that it's meant that she's a literal human in a costume or whatever. I think that Sanrio means more like that Hello Kitty is to cats whatever Goofy is to Pluto. She's an anthropomorph (a "cartoon character"), in other words - she has human attributes that distinguish her from the lower animals, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have her obvious animal characteristics as well.

P.S. Jason is doin' just fine on the show.

The writing is terrible in the entirety of the prequel trilogy. Ep III has theoretically interesting plot points, but the part where they say words is universally bad.

1) there was absolutely time traveling in Blood Omen 1. That was the main plot thing by the end.

2) A bunch of the Legacy of Kain voice actors are dead: Tony Jay (Elder God/Mortanius in BO1), Rene Auberjonois (Janos Audron), Paul Lukather (Vorador). Michael Bell (Raziel) is in his 80s, Richard Doyle (Moebius) is 74 and even Simon Templeman (Kain) is on the wrong side of 65. Do you change half the cast? Do you change the cast entirely? The voice acting (and story) is the best part of those games, and the part that still holds up the best, so you're damned if you do damned if you don't.

To quote Wikipedia, "Sanrio depicts Hello Kitty as a female gijinka (anthropomorphization) of Japanese Bobtail with a red bow and, notably, no mouth." So yes, Hello Kitty IS a cat, God damn it. This is just a misunderstanding due to pedantry on Sanrio's part, and probably something being lost in translation as well.
