Since we are switching things up around here can we get a video player that works better on iPad? I can’t fast forward or rewind because the bar at the bottom of the video player is so small.

Also, people didn’t buy a Mirror’s Edge 2 because it was a bad game not because people didn’t want a sequel.

The kids in Jeff's neighbourhood kicking the football at each other might have been playing Australian Rules Football, which has the key skill of using punts to pass around the ground.

Regarding "simcade" vs simulation racing games:

Danny mentioned the presence of wheel support being a determining factor -- I'd take it one step further and say that wheel and pedals ought to be the primary input device that game was designed for, as opposed to merely bolting on wheel support to a game that was designed for a controller.

FM7 may technically support wheel input, but playing it with a wheel does a disservice to both FM7 and FFB wheels due to how bad it feels (unusably bad.) FM7 actually made me wonder if the FFB motors in my wheel were old/broken until I reinstalled Assetto Corsa.

You can’t even play Mario Golf Super Rush in a party setting because it’s only 2 player split screen. At this point it sounds like I have zero reason to get this game.

Super excited for Danny and Tam's new show. Playing souls games stresses me out too much but I love to watch them. Hopefully they are only lightly edited because the rough spots are what make those games so watchable.

In regards to bands playing in lower tunings, it is absolutely still a thing. These days (at least form personal experience) it's more about what kind of guitar tone you're after, or whether it suits a specific song or not. I write a lot of music and generally I tune down to C standard, mainly because it suits the tone of my voice better and gives the music I play an extra oomph.

Royal Blood for example, pretty huge mainstream band, they play in C a lot and sometimes drop down to B or A, as do many other musicians. Just depends on what your ears like.

Interesting shows line up. I especially like how they fill different days of the week, and we still have the Dan and Jeff B show coming up, or so I heard.

For Danny's treasures show, I recommend Kya: Dark Lineage as one of the games that gets looked at.

As someone that's exclusively been using Linux for ~12 years, the Windows 11 discussion sounds completely alient to me at this point. 😅️

Whenever I run into something that doesn't like Firefox, I generally load it up in Ungoogled Chromium. It's pretty much Chrome but without Google's nonsense.

Yeah, I played with all assists off, manual clutch, sim steering. When you say that FM7 feels good to you, what are you comparing it to? Compared to something like Assetto Corsa it's a night and day difference. In FM7 the sensation of oversteer and responsiveness to correct for it is simply inadequate to drive at limits of traction, especially compared to a controller (even with all the assists supposedly off there as well). There's a reason why people have gone to the length of making the Forza EmuWheel utility in an attempt to fix the awful FFB implementation.

This is something primarily up to your configuration. Safari on iPad in recent releases by default lies to make it indistinguishable from a Mac computer, the whole "bringing you the full desktop web" idea. Hence you end up getting interfaces designed for a mouse. You can turn the lying off on a site-by-site basis by tapping on the "aA" button in the address bar, going to Website Settings, and turning the Request Desktop Website option off for GB. From then on, just enlarge any video on GB, and you'll have proper controls. All the while the GB website still properly saving your playback progress (which is missing when you "download" instead).

Gamepass has a lot of stuff to offer for 15$ a month, but there are plenty of folk that straight up don't want to spend 15$ a month and rather buy Forza and Halo on a sale and then get 2-4 months of joy out of those games and get ahead on the financial front. Especially when you're dealing with kids that have more time than money and have been putting all kinds of f2P treasures and weapons and outfits on the steam market to get their game-money together. On top of that, some people just want to build up something that they can return to, instead of everything being temporal and lost as soon as a subscription runs out. Eventhough Steam is still just a licence, it's a step closer to ownership than a subscription service ever will be.

Sure, that 15$ a month on gamepass would also let them play a bunch of other games, but at some point time becomes the limiting factor and you end up having to be subscribed for multiple months to finally get through the games you were initially interested in + also feel that gamepass effect where you can easily check out some of the newest games for a handful of hours.

I think game pass is going to be a net negative on game value long term - very simliar to the mobile phone market, anything that doesn't push constant engagement and spend will be considered throwaway and valueless. I really think it will be considered a mistake long term, while microsoft was desperate to salvage their image from the xbox one generation by giving everything away for "Free" (or the perception of free).

@spudbug: I agree with that concern. They brought up and quickly dismissed the Spotify comparison and the way it's trained people to think of music as a worthless resource that you treat like turning on a water faucet while the artists get virtually nothing... I think it's a more valid concern than they gave it credit for.

OR... it could be a different situation more like Disney+, where one or a couple centralized services become so widespread that they basically decide which games "get to be seen" and everything else is completely obscure to the point of not being economically viable to make.

You have to start playing to the refs, mirroring design trends and/or self-censoring to avoid anything that would turn the megacorps off from choosing your game... ironically, something like Cruelty Squad, which they also talked about, seems like exactly the kind of game that would never exist in an environment like that.

For the time being, though, what a deal!

I think it's a bit weird that Jeff and the rest keep generalizing and then being surprised when said generalizations aren't quite true when it comes to Mass Effect. Most of those fans who cosplay and have N7 in their bios that they were talking about most likely were not the ones creating and signing petitions to get BioWare to change the ME3 ending. Not saying all those fans loved the ending as it was, but I doubt they were a part of the uproar. As with everything, you have to take a step back and realize the vocal groups within video game fandoms are ultimately a small section of the overall consumer base.

Game Pass games being top sellers on Steam is not weird. Not everyone wants to continually pay a sub fee in order to keep accessing games - I'd rather pay one price (especially a sale price, as is going on now on Steam) and have it in perpetuity.

Jeff said he didn't want to take out his ire on that one emailer about the PS5 stand, but that guy sounded smarmy as hell. It's ok to slap him down.

@angrighandi: Oh yeah totally.

Right now Microsoft is splurging money left and right on games because they're trying to establish gamepass as a complete no-brainer for every gamer out there. The value is there for the consumer and for the publishers. But as subscription services become more and more popular, you're training all these gamepass-folk that they no longer need to look at stores for new games to buy. There's always something new coming to the gamepass you already pay for. I'd always prefer playing a 7/10 game i already pay for with my subscription than having to pay additional money for a 8/10 game that's not part of the service. While i'm 'wasting' my subscription money. And naturally, i would be less likely to uncover that 8/10 game if i don't look outside the gamepass offerings as much anymore.

In the future this might lead to a point where getting your game picked for Gamepass is not a golden lottery ticket, but a necessity to be profitable. Games have to be where the eyeballs are to have a shot. If games go the way of music and TV-shows, that means we're looking at subscription services. But what kind of additional value does [Indie point n click game nr 20 from a new developer] provide to Microsoft when they already have the big ones from established studio's in that genre on their platform already? Not much.

Also, as you let more and more games in, discoverability gets negatively impacted for Microsoft as well, so they might not even want this new developer clogging up the service. And if they do, it's not going to be a generous offer as is the case right now. Microsoft NEEDS these game deals right now to be successful. They won't NEED a game deal with Indie point n click game nr 20.

These things are really frustrating to me because i can't fault any of the parties for choosing this route. Of course these studio's should be happy with their gamepass deals, of course it makes sense for Microsoft to make gamepass such great value that the gamers themselves do all the word to word marketing that they could dream of. Of course it makes sense that a load of people get on the gamepass train and play all those new games for a fairly low price. I just worry about what it will mean for the market in the future.

Offtopic Doom & Gloom: It's the same thing with Amazon appearing in my little country with their offerings. Of course it makes sense that a lot of people jump on prime and suddenly start to buy all these things through amazon instead of their local competitors. Movies, Games, Twitch sub, Photo Storage, Free Shipping, Deals? How can you say no to all that for a few bucks? But in the end, we'll all be worse off for it.

I haven't played AC, but have played Project Cars (1 & 2), F1 2019, Dirt Rally, and Dirt 4 (and some others I am probably forgetting.) Are you playing on PC? If so, I could not speak to that, as I played all of these games on an Xbox One. One the XO, I did not have any issues. Like most racing games, I adjusted some of the settings, mostly related to deadzones. I do not remember any major differences in FFB with F7 related to the other games I mentioned.

@onemanarmyy:

I have Game Pass and, if anything, it makes it easier for me to justify purchasing games not on the service at full price.

To me, Game Pass is for trying those games I normally would not even buy. I am still going to buy games like the new Battlefield and probably Far Cry 6, because I know that games I want to play like FH5 and MS Flight Sim are going to be available on GP.
