How do you top an official Resident Evil escape room? That sounds insane.

I've been to the Sleep No More Hotel/Warehouse and that was amazing but it was no customa made escape room. So jealous of Tam/Lucy.

As someone that used to replay my old short games over and over again, the $60 worthiness argument has always sucked to me.

Metal Gear Solid was a game I got, spent a bunch of my own money as a 13 year old. And I beat that game dozens of times, despite it being 8 or so hours long. Or the amount of times I played Sonic or Contra or Tenchu or a 360-era action game. It was never a dollar per hour thing, but a "if this game's good I'll play it again" thing.

Whereas I have never replayed a giant open world game that presumably cost way more to make. Seems like around Skyrim, which was in its own niche back then, we decided that games gotta be big to be worth paying for. So we got so many bloated ass games that didn't need to be full of filler content. But that's what the value of a game was now (only buy it on a Steam sale, though).

It's funny because now with Game Pass, we're starting to see shorter games with AAA production come out for the price of a monthly subscription. Stuff like Psychonauts 2 or the worst Halo. Which is great. But the market doesn't make any sense at this point.

I'm not someone that just spends $60 left and right, either. Just gotta pick and choose what looks like my thing. And if a game doesn't seem like it's worth full price, I just won't buy it and won't expect the market to shift drastically because I didn't buy Assassin's Creed 2022.

Old man argument? Sure. But it feels like the expectation people have for dollars an hour is weird. If it's an awesome 8 hours you can experience over and over again, seems worth it to me. Hell, if a game like Vanquish was double in length, it's probably be a worse game that drags on (like Resident Evil 4 did, tighter can be better!)

What the absolute fuck was this discussion about the UK Gov looking at legislation around loot boxes? Sounded like a libertarian's circle jerk, "oh 'what about the children' is a red flag", "I'm not coming down on either side here" jfc guys, you're basically ceding the responsibility to the companies who profit from exploitation as a moral position, like asking tobacco companies to set the regulations and laws around smoking.

I know it's blah, but talking about monitors/equipment provided for free making you a better gamer doesn't feel super good or giant bomby for me.

@zappymufasa: Also funny saying they didn’t get paid but got equipment for free throughout this bombcast. They didn’t pay me they just sent me free stuff that cost real money. First the monitor then the rip apart game boys.

Also, why did anybody spend any money on FF7 remake? Everyone involved in that deserves to lose their jobs. Don’t care if you loved it. It was no fun because the combat was boring.

With regards to blind boxes and microtransactions regulations, this is relevant for a child in my life right now. He's the 16 year old son of two refugees and they're living here in the U.S.. He has his first job, and he's wasting tons of money on FIFA and Fortnite microtransactions. He plays with friends, so there's that pull to always pay for these things to try to get swag to show off and impress those friends.

At the same time, his parents are aware of video games but I don't think they understand how insidious these things are designed - a parent who isn't aware of technology beyond using a cellphone for communication possibly has no idea that these games are literally designed in a way to make you want to spend lots of money. His dad is seeing the bank transactions in his son's account, but thinks it's purely a lack of self-control on his son's part, but also he's still a kid and is still developing. It really sucks.

I understand the hesistance to rely on geriatric legislators who barely comprehend that we’ve been in the 21st century for decades now, but companies have demonstrated time and time again that they’re not going to adequately police themselves. Unfortunately for the US specifically, legalization of daily fantasy sports betting is on the rise, so we’re only trending in a more exploitative direction. I doubt the US government will curtail predatory DLC in any meaningful way without significant course correction.

Disappointing to hear that Stray runs a bit rough on PC. How long should I wait before it gets reasonably patched?

The value proposition of a game based off of labor is a misguided talking point. It would be one thing if the people who actually worked on the game saw the full value of their labor but they do not. The publisher see that money. They paid the developers for their labor and what surplus profits they saw from the sale they kept. They didn't redistribute that surplus to the people who did the lion's share of the work.

This is why I'm against F2P game these days because of how monetized it is. Not only for how these things pray upon folks with poor impulse control or addictive personalities - children too - but because developers don't see any of these profits. Yeah, it continuing to make money means the publisher will continue to support it by paying the meager wages of the developers but all that money, all the profit, the developers don't see a single cent of.

Capitalism, folks. Goddamn worthless socio-economic system.

Just a more lighter note: Skater XL and Session are games that exist if you want to get your skate fix in. The later seems to be more popular with the skate crowd than the former, but that's just from what I've seen.

@zappymufasa: I'm behind in listening, just got to this today and found that entire section very gross. Obvious product placement. "These monitors are super awesome and great and you should buy the monitors that I got for free with no downsides... oh look, they are reasonably priced too!" I hope this isn't a sign of things to come... :|

@moosader: Kinda bummed, I never got around to finishing this episode and finally just did, listened to the discussion around microstransactions and was truly surprised by the takes, yeah. As mentioned by you moosader and ALLTheDinos, this is actually a problem for kids and it's pretty broad to say "parents should be educated" well sure. But no one's doing that either, and GB crew assume a lot about all parents - not every kid has the kind of present parent they talk about, or there may just be comprehension barriers. I was a child of immigrants myself and I'm glad this shit didn't exist when I was a kid, they wouldn't have known how to control that stuff easily. And with older kids who are getting their own jobs it's even more complex, they can spend that directly.

I work for one of the AAA companies myself, and I'll tell you this - the money multiplies infinitely, and we never see our own wages increase. F2P and microstransactions don't improve our own budgets or salaries, just quarter over quarter earnings and exec bonuses.

Sorry, just figured it was worth the rant in case someone might read it, haha.
