@voidburger Not sure about the US but a de facto relationship is a legally recognized thing here in Australia, treated the same as marriage in many cases (depending on the state). I haven't actually heard it for a long time, but some people used to talk about their de facto husband/wife.

@jerf If you wanna see the actual like... nightmare behind Roblox you should look into the People Make Games coverage on Roblox and how gross and exploitative that platform is of children and workers.

Bone marrow is the friggin greatest, but not something that most people enjoy on it's own. Roast it, chop it super fine and add it to soups, stocks, stews etc. for the greates mouth explosion of all time.

@janman The way it was explained to me the reason they have different accents in Xenoblade is because it's to signify that each character is from a different region, similar to when a dubbed anime has a character with a Texan accent.

Regarding the crew’s general prediction of the next console wave finally removing disc drives and being all-digital: sure, one day we’ll finally get there, but I feel like every hardware maker is afraid to fully make the plunge.

Is it still a concern that you piss off retailers by eliminating disc games as a product that is sold? Retailers would lose the sweet margins on disc games and only carry console hardware, which A) takes up more inventory space, and B) presumably has worse margins per unit. I guess retailers also sell digital storefront prepaid cards.

Also, as much as affluent countries are probably buying into digital storefronts and gamepass, is this also true globally? Or are less affluent countries still more likely to buy a console then mod chip it/homebrew the firmware to play pirated games. Do people still pirate games onto discs that are sold at shady stalls or mall kiosks, or have consoles with modded firmware gone entirely digital? I haven’t tracked how console piracy has evolved, but I’m curious if disc drive absence would affect it.

I tried going all digital late in the ps3 cycle, but since then I’ve had 3 hard drives go corrupt and cause me to redownload everything (western digital, seagate). That plus ISP data caps made me go back to physical when it makes sense. I mix it up at this point (hard not to when psn is constantly having sales), but fuck redownloading something like cod modern warfare which is/was close to 200gb? Ugh.

While I do agree that I like Yakuza as a series way more than GTA, those two games are doing _totally_ different things to the point where I think that GTA Tokyo Drift is still totally something that you could do without stepping on Yakuza's toes. GTA is a series fundamentally about goofing off in a massive, systemic(ish) sandbox with a heavy emphasis on cars and driving, whereas Yakuza is mostly a constrained brawler where you basically just beat up dudes in the same six or so blocks

A console going digital-only would blow ass. Shitty infrastructure, particularly in the US, notwithstanding eliminating that option would be a blow to the consumer. I wish I had the privilege of being incredulous at people still buying discs but I have data caps. The less I have to download, the better. Massive day-one patches suck shit as it is but adding the whole game to it would make it worse. Digital-only anything would be great under any system other than capitalism, but I rather not rely on the kindness and good will of a machine create to generate pure profits.

I appreciate push-back against this sort of thing, but I think the erosion of what the consumer actually gets when they purchase something can be partially blamed at the people who cover games (not pointing fingers here). Little by little we lose more and more and the best I can hope for from the enthusiast press is them throwing up their hands and gong "Welp, that's just the reality of the industry." I don't even think it's hyperbolic to say that pretty soon we'll just be buy limited time licenses for 60 or 70 dollars and they only last a few months before you have to drop money on it again.

More folks who cover this stuff need to be more like Jim Stephanie Sterling. They have the right amount of righteous anger that you really need to keep it real.
