Oh man.. Jan being interested in Football Manager is quite something.

Sadly, playing that game as a newcomer is quite awful as a stream, given that you have to spend quite some time understanding all the screens and what options they give you. The act of finding the right kind of players to sign and offload is basically spreadsheet management and being smart about finding what you need in a huge database. It's not unusual to start a season and only end up playing the first actual match 4 hours after the start of the game, because you've been so busy putting a team and staff together.

On top of that, i can have the experience to know that a 31 year old winger costing me 10% of my wages should be sold and that i could find a better option in the market for that kind of wage, but if you're completely new to the game you don't know what good value is and what's not. You might not have a good idea how valuable young talent can be, even if they don't look very good as you buy them.

I will say that this FM is the easiest one so far, so if you pick a good team and put the best players in the best spots, you'll end up winning quite a bit. But honestly, winning games with one of the best teams not the main appeal of FM for most players, given that you don't control your players at all. What keeps people glued to the screens is the ability to find that young 17 year old for a crazy good price that ends up being the world's best player. Or taking this russian club out of debt and making them a household name in european football. It's a game with relatively few moment-to-moment highlights. More a game where the long-term journey is what matters.

I will say, that it's quite a fun game to check in every day for 15 min through a youtuber and see this story of a save unfold over time.

Good UPF. Danny says he does not have a game type but I wonder if the commodore amiga would be the raised from ashes for a series.

Is anyone else having issues playing videos on mobile lately? It will play around the first minute then stop as if the video has ended. Older videos work fine but for the last week or so, new videos just won't play on my phone.

In this supposed new era of "Weird" Giantbomb, they could make a FM series work. I'm not sure how it would work, but I maintain that there exists a format where it's possible.

I think the game is more approachable than many people think it is. The only real barrier to a potential fan (someone who isn't totally ignorant of soccer, and isn't completely repulsed by Grand Strategy games, which is what FM is) is that the worst and most boring part of the game, pre-season, is what you have to start with. You can do the start unemployed, or fast-forward to season start options, but they introduce their own problems.

Crusader Kings 3 had an enormous amount of crossover success. Anybody that "gets" CK and understands that you are playing as a character, not as a country/army/realm, can potentially get Football Manager.

@magnetphonics: Oh i have no doubt that Jan could play the game and end up enjoying it. I just don't think that the first 10 hours of someone's Football Manager experience is going to be riveting content or necessarily enjoyable to the player itself. Just like i don't have the patience to watch the first hours of a new player's CK save as they try to make sense of what the game is. I want to see someone like Quill18 start a CK3 save and be able to make things happen within the first hours. Even if Jan found himself a FM sherpa, to get to the magic of FM, you kind of have to be in it for 3-4 seasons, which can translate to a month of gametime. It just seems like a huge ask for someone that's on the fence.

Two short-term options could be 1) Picking a national team and playing Euro 2020 with that team. 2) fast forward to Christmas, take a team that's struggling and try to end up higher.

But if Jan is interested in the game, i definitly think he could start playing it a bit and figure out if he likes it or not. It's a fairly overwhelming game at first, but not necessarily a hard game.

Just want to say that I'd love to see some Final Fantasy XIV or other MMORPG playing from you guys. I always love multiplayer stuff the most. I know it's harder to set up and all, but man, I love it :)

I support increased baseball talk. After years of hockey, football (both kinds), and "sports are boring" conversations the 3 minutes of talking about baseball was a breath of fresh air.
