ALBUMMER! 08: Too Legit for the Pit

This week on Albummer! we're talking about Too Legit for The Pit: Hardcore Takes the Rap, a collection of mostly ironic guitar covers of hip hop hits that sure as hell didn't age well.

The crew behind Two Minutes to Late Night are here to re-review some of the most critically reviled albums out there!

I am annoyed that this album exists, I couldn't make it through 3 songs before I had to stop. Time for the palate cleanser.

The ironic hip-hop cover because rap music is lol is among my least favorite things in the world. Thanks for going after this.

The cover of Bust a Move on this album is so bad that it gave me serious Hot Dance 98 Block Rockin Beats vibes

Jordan, there is a bootleg mashup album called Black Gold that is an incredible Wu x Hendrix comp.

Dude, you've gotta check out the Biggie Hendrix Experience if you haven't already. That was my everyday listen in 2008.

Surely this means 'Punk Goes Crunk' is gonna show up one day.

Oh god, this made me think that the Albummer crew should be given Jeff's 'The Worst' Spotify playlist.

Christ, I think this is the worst album they’ve done yet. They lulled me into a false sense of security with those U2 and Judas Priest albums. As was said in this ep, there was simply no reason for this to be made.

Jordan, I don’t think you read these (maybe Drew can pass it on?), but the rapper I’d most heartily recommend from the last 5 years is Vince Staples. Varied sound, funny as hell when he wants to be, and awesome hooks up and down. Big Fish Theory was my #1 album of 2017, and FM! is such a fun listen. His self-titled from this year is definitely a shift but it sounds like he went through a lot the last few years, and it’s great regardless.

What videogame would you pay Lucie with? I'd give her Flower.

Or Manhunt. She's either as sweet as she looks or is holding some darkness the world isn't ready for.

I know nobody needs to say this because all GB Premium members are good people, but if you happen to know the "secret" Emily danced around, remember to respect her privacy and don't spill it in the comments. Be cool!

Just wanna say I adore this show. Thanks for all the laughs. These have been some questionable to terrible albums, but I think this week's takes the cake. It really has no redeeming value, at least to me. U2 probably a close second.

Also appreciate this show turning me onto Two Minutes To Late Night. Been watching a lot of those on Youtube, they're excellent!

Glad to see the small hat tradition alive and well on this website (about video games?)

This show is great, this album is terrible! Has there been any mention of ever breaking these premium shows out into their own RSS? Makes it easier to organise and queue things in my podcatcher if I can break out like Bak 2 Skool and Albummer.

First of all I really like the idea, execution and choice to add a different kind of show to the GB. But this is at least a third episode where games/gaming culture are referenced as a joke or with a sarcastic tone and it is completely turning me off the whole thing. All the other additions to the GB show catalogue feel respectful to the platform. Am I suppose to think its so cool and punk not to give a damn what GB even is since most of those people clearly dont care or didnt even make the most simple background check? I follow GB from the beginning and subscribe for many years now, I gave Albummer a chance but I really feel let down right now and after hearing "love videogames" followed by a laugh I had to stop and write this. Cheers

@parafia: Not to break the kayfabe, but we absolutely respect the shit out of this audience and Giant Bomb. We're comedians and we poo poo on everything we talk about as a sign of love. We've been making a metal talk show for almost six years where we make fun of the musicians we admire to their face. Mostly we're just feeding the trolls who admitedly don't like this show because being the bad guy is really, really fun.

another great epi, and the fact that this album is awful on more than a purely aesthetic level makes this a particularly compelling episode! good choice!

@diet_hellboy: First of all, thank you for your answer and I really love the show, what you are doing and general self-distance. I am aware there have been some problem with trolls and you have every right to want to stick it to them now and then in a way you know best. But they do not represent the majority of the audience and If you try to keep away from all the supposed drama it feels strange, not being fully aware of the context, to feel mocked in a way, while being your supporter from the get go. Obviously what you wrote clarifies it so thank you for that and I get your position. Much respect and keep up great work!

Yeah I figured it was just one of those things when I heard it. The hc/metal communities can be so serious sometimes that joking around does break a lot of that weirdo tension.

I have a file of that Public Enemy cover Dillinger did! It was a promo for the game Homefront, and they did cover Fight the Power. They gave it out as like a limited free download, and there were some neat ones. I heard about it because I was into iwrestledabearonce, who covered Uprising by Muse (didn't actually much care for that cover tbh >>). I also remember there was Periphery covering One by Metallica, and Veil of Maya covering Sunday Bloody Sunday.

As someone who never really got into Hardcore(music) but does like wrestling it was very odd hearing the Rexplex name-dropped on this show, so many ROH shows in the early 2000s were at the plex. Im just so used to hearing it referenced as a wrestling venue it kinda slips my mind that a bunch of other shit happened there also, what a crazy story.

I have to listen to this, but it reminds me of the Duran Duran cover of WHITE LINES. The whole album "Thank You" is tough, but I had it stuck in a CD player for a while so I've listened to far to many times.

As funny as the GB HQ jokes are, it is an awful shame the GB x 2M2LN collab hadn't happened a few years prior. I think both groups have way more in common than they realise. But really it's anime that unites us all.... for better or worse.
