ALBUMMER! 16: Good Charlotte's Youth Authority (featuring Jeff Bakalar)

This week we’re talking about the 2016 album from Cameron Diaz’s husband’s post hiatus album, Good Charlotte’s Youth Authority. And look, Jeff Bakalar joins the show because he is contractually obligated to do so!

The crew behind Two Minutes to Late Night are here to re-review some of the most critically reviled albums out there!

Good show!!!!!!!!

Great to have Giant Bomb's Jeff Baklava.

The only Good Charlotte song I enjoy is The Click because it was used as a theme song for Undergrads.

Not sure if it's been recommended yet, but Cold Lake by Celtic Frost definitely fits the "Jesus what the fuck happened" mold. The punk, thrash and death influences that made Morbid Tales and Into the Pandemonium such classics was jettisoned for half-assed glam metal, and it's something to behold. Not to mention how it iced the band for over a decade before Tom Warrior even considered making music again.

I was in high school in Baltimore during the Bakalar "meet Good Charlotte's mom" years, and I had no idea why they were so goddamn popular amongst my peers until today. Mannnn did I hate their singles, and boy oh boy did DC 101 and HFS play them on fucking loop.

"40 Oz. Dream" was terrible, one of the worst things I've heard this year. It's bad enough we listened to Weezer already, now we've got counterfeit Weezer? It's not incompetent or explicitly irritating like Corey Feldman or Crazy Frog, but I'm with Katie in that this mediocrity with absolutely no reason to exist can be worse than those.

The Anthem was in Elite Beat Agents, the best music video game, so I love that Good Charlotte song.

This is easily my favorite GB content now. Also I found Generation Loss due to Jeremy’s plug at the end. It’s incredible and I highly recommend the RENT episode.

EDIT: Is this episode like when a retail place is told the regional manager is showing up one week, so everybody spruces the place up the night before he arrives?

I had almost the exact same experience with Good Charlotte as Katie except I just downloaded the album off of probably Kazaa or something. I also worked at and stole shit from Hot Topic

Ugh 'Youth Authority' is 100% a reference to the same phrase in Rancid's 'Time Bomb'. I had the same saddening realisation at the same time.

@threeoct It's too bad that they perceived Jeff that way. As I perceived the intro, Jeff is a genuine fan of theirs, which I assume is what caused this series to exist here, and he was just looking to guest in as a fan/cohost. The whole Boss thing was wonky. Especially the pronunciation bit, y'know? Had they not thought of this as an inspection (maybe it was, I dunno), perhaps they could have paid the little respect Jeff was asking for in exploratory Bakalarizing

Great series!

I promise you that we were joking and that he was in on the joke. We love our boss Jeb Bric-a-Brac and his website GrimyBra.com

I assure you I was merely making a joke. If somebody has to be the man in charge of GB HQ, why not Jeff Bokchoi.

Rancid are definitely a pop punk band. It's not about what kind of music you play, it's about dating a 15 year-old when you're 30.

What a great episode. As for Jordan's hot take about Green Day and Good Charlotte being the same...

Why would you say something so controversial, yet so brave?

Great episode! Loved the recommendation segment at the end, too.

I don't know if there's any avenue for it to happen, but Jeff's guest spot got me thinking that Giant Bomb alumni and noted endurance drummer Alex Navarro would be a powerful guest on this show.

Digging the music recommendations with the audio previews, real fun way to tie it back into the theme of the show and to hear about new music.

As someone who worked at Hot Topic, recently, yes I imagine it's super easy to steal from. It's so goddamn cramped and dark and what the hell was I going to do to shoplifters?

You know, if that bullying keeps up the Albummer crew might have to unionize against Boss Bakalar, just saying.

Exactly! its about grooming a young girl from another country, bringing her to the states(not until after she turns 18 of course), signing her band to your label, getting married *the year* after she turns 18, potentially dropping her band when you break up, threatening the male members of her band with getting blacklisted, etc, etc, etc.

I really loved the section where everyone shouted out some good contemporary music. Would love it if this was a returning feature, even if the shout outs don't necessarily match the album of the week. Sarchasm rules, along with everyone on Asian Man Records. Highly recommend Grumpster from the same label for a very solid Gilman St. sound.

oh and also the band Ramona fits the pop punk mold while being a really young band

Is the bit of buying up URL's and redirecting them to Giant Bomb still a thing? Because if so, GrimyBra.com needs to join the fold.

Hey, at least she got to break up with him to marry... another abusive sack of shit. Poor Brody.

On the off chance someone sees this, if you want more pop punk done by hardcore kids, check out My Body Sings Electric. Their debut album (from like ten years ago oh no the passage of time) absolutely rips.

This was a great episode. The comedy dial was tuned a bit lower than usual but that opened up room for some good conversations to happen about pop punk. Also always fun to give the opportunity to people to shout out some of the current music they're into.
