ALBUMMER! 40: Insane Clown Posse's "Bang! Pow! Boom!"

Today on Albummer! We're talking about the Insane Clown Posse album with the song about not knowing how magnets work. Also, Jeremy used to be a Juggalo. Good night and good luck.

The crew behind Two Minutes to Late Night are here to re-review some of the most critically reviled albums out there!

I live in the midwest, but luckily didn't have juggalos in my school. I did eventually work in a Best Buy and helped a couple of Juggalos IN FULL MAKEUP buy some CDs (you'll never guess which ones).

@sir5000: fun fact, Minion Pro is the default font for the text tool in Adobe Premiere and this might be the only time in my video career that I didn't change it to something else.

My cousin told me that there's a secret Insane Clown Posse song hidden under a truck in Vermillion City.

Juggalos are big Vanessa Carlton fans, right? Maybe one of her CDs?

You can't "used to be" a Juggalo. You're in or you're out for good!

Was looking forward to the first ICP episode! Older family listening to The Great Milenko also got me into these jokers, but I fell out of them as I listened to more and more hip-hop.

Good show!

Last Wednesday after the previous episode aired, I went out to get groceries and got stuck behind a car with a custom license plate of “2XWHOOP”. There were at least four Hatchet Man stickers on the back. Coincidence? I think not, thanks to BIG ALBUMMER with their finger on the button!

Fun answer: You're all correct!

Boring answer: Juggalos love to buy more ICP albums, funnily enough. Also, Tech Nine albums. When we still sold CDs there, ICP and Tech Nine were the largest sections in the aisles.

You know, its funny you mention ICP as "the wrestling of music" Jeremy, because (perhaps surprising no one) ICP are HUGE wrestling fans. They are backyard trained and have had matches or been involved with both WCW AND WWE( in the early 90s 2000s, and run their own promotion, "Juggalo Championship Wrestling"(previously Juggalo Championshit Wrestling). Their biggest show obviously coincides with the Gathering every year.

Their song "The Greatest Show" was reworked and used as a theme song by stable "The Oddities" in WWF and they performed the song a few times on WWF programming.

@phished0ne: i rewatched the Hokus Pokus video almost immediately after we cut and saw them do a few Wrestling Moves and instantly realized how stupid of an observation it is to call them the Wrestling of Music

They breifly touch on it but it's important to reiterate that these clowns come from Detroit. The city of theatrical and entertaining musical acts. Alice Cooper, Kiss, hell kid rock's a rich boy playing a hick. Lots of make up and "character" playing. ICP are no different.

No radio or MTV play these guys grinded and hustled like crazy.

Their best music plays like a Tales from the Crypt comic and their worst is, well, not great. But considering what they've accomplished and for how long, mad respect to them. MMFCL 2whoop

I wrote into GB before about it, but years ago when the Miracles video came out, I happened to be at a bar one night and I saw a guy with a hatchet man necklace. I wanted to get the Juggalo Perspective to see if they hated the new purer direction of ICP. I asked the guy about it, and he was drunk, and he said he would love everything they did, because "they are a family, and you always support your family". He then kissed his hatchet man medallion when he said that. I then pressed to ask more about ICP's choice of lyrics compared to the past, and the guy started accusing me of being a "fake fan" since I liked them in high school but stopped listening. He, a fully adult man, then looked at me funny and angrily asked me, also a fully adult man, "Hey, wait a second. Are you a fuckin wannabe?" and I didn't know how to answer. His friend from across the room saw that things were getting tense so he came up and asked the guy what was up. They whispered in each others' ears back and forth, and I didn't know what to make of it. The friend then turned to me and said, "my friend here tells me that you're a wannabe. Is this true?" and I was so shocked I just said something stupid like "well I like to think I'm pretty legitimate." This answer displeased them, and they began to circle around me like they were going to jump me. Immediately, the manager of the bar came over and told us to break it up (and also to not put beers on the pool table, which they did as they were circling me). So I got the hell out of there and went over to find my friends.

I never had a direct interaction with Juggalos before, but I did witness a very wholesome moment years ago where a few juggalos (what are they called in a group? A gaggle of Juggalos?) showed an elderly gentleman how to use the electronic ticket machine at a bus station. The elderly man was not phased by the clown makeup at all.

When the Miracles video first went viral, I remember watching it while I was high as shit and kept seeing Shaggy 2 Dope out of the corner of my eye. Anyways, great episode as always.

The epiphany for me, was when I realized the majority of their songs are caricatures for the fan base to hate. Their whole motif has been punishing awful people with a chop, chop, swing, swing.

I agree their lyrics have a shit ton of misogyny, but I have felt the point was to hate the fuckboi type represented. Lyrics like "is it my tight jeans?" doesn't seem like a juggalo being portrayed. That comes off as effective othering meant to give a target for those hatchets.

But I am no Juggalo and that interpretation may give them more credit than they are due.

I've been a premium subscriber for years, but honestly the biggest thing that kept me hanging onto that membership this past year was Albummer. Now my days as a subscriber are up, but I wanted to be sure to say that you all have put on a very entertaining show here.
