Living in SoCal, I associate Transplants with the mid-2000s white kids from the Inland Empire driving lifted trucks, plugs, with iron cross tattoos yet appropriating durags and cholo attire. Seems like this culture died off with Myspace.

Definitely should've had more about how Brody was 16 and Tim was 30 when they met.

I came into this expecting the worst but glad to hear it still holds up in some people's eyes.

This was one of my most played albums as a youth. I was obsessed with Tim's vocal style and felt this album best showed it off (extremely not sure I still feel the same).

Emily commits a murder at 26:20.

Biggest shoutout to Drew for whatever lifestyle changes he made, he looks fucking incredible. What an inspiration.

yeaaaah he is 100 million percent a groomer. Its wild how many people in the community dont know how that relationship started. They met when she was sixteen, she came to LA when she was 18( think they married the same year?), Distillers were formed and almost immediately signed to Hellcat/Epitaph(think it was like a year after they formed), it was pretty gross.

Fun fact, Mark Knopfler and Sting are both from Newcastle so maybe that explains the similarities.

In this episode, the question was asked "why does Tim Armstrong sound like that?" and I've actually heard an explanation that sounds plausible. Brendan Kelly (frontman of Slapstick, the Lawrence Arms, and the Falcon) claimed on one of his podcasts (Road to the Skeleton Coast maybe?) that Tim did not always sound/act like that. He claims that there was a skinhead in the Chicago punk scene who was exactly the way Tim is now and apparently Tim met him sometime back in the day and suddenly started slurring like that and stuff. So, Tim's public persona might have been stolen from a skinhead in the Chicago punk scene.

Sometimes Brendan exaggerates on his stories, but I choose to believe this one, because it's funny for someone to consciously decide they should talk the way Tim Armstrong talks.

Shoutout to Tom for connecting to a Zoom call with Sony Handicam for the video and a rotary phone for the audio.

I also didn't realize these guys were the Fructis Shampoo commercial guys. The moment I googled up the song after they mentioned it, it kinda refreshed my memory of the late 2000s.

I'm a little late, but Travis Barker absolutely was playing syncopated beats in blink-182 and in The Aquabats! before that. Off the top of my head, the bossa nova beat that Barker played in Dysentery Gary has some really complex cross sticking that still makes my head spin after drumming for over 15 years. Comparing the drumming on The Fury of The Aquabats! or any of the first 3 blink records he was on to his drumming on any of the Transplants records, I feel like you can hear the difference in enthusiasm for the projects/how much fun he was having. Drew is completely right in that the four on the floor for him is phoning it in. He's always going to play well, but it's not always his best, and I personally think it's really easy to tell which is which.

Shoutout to Stereogum for being a fantastic place to find high quality music and with a quite neat cast of characters in the commentariat that have a knack for coming through with adjacent music to check out. Tom's The Number Ones column is fantastic too and has spawned it's entirely own set of readers.

Good to be on the other side of all the Kanye, Grimes & Phoebe Bridgers articles though.
