ALBUMMER! 51: Nine Inch Nails' Quake Soundtrack

Today on Albummer! we're joined by YouTuber, drummer, and actual video game player Jon Sudano to talk about the Quake soundtrack. It's like four hours of computer farting in Hell. Good work, Trent Reznor!

The crew behind Two Minutes to Late Night are here to re-review some of the most critically reviled albums out there!

Quak OST is fine. But that Quake II soundtrack with Sonic Mayhem... oh man, my early guitar learning memories with Descent into Cerberon on Quad Machine are some of my best.

We're edging closer to a MST3K-esque situation where the Albummer crew are trapped on a Zoom call and forced to play video games while we monitor their minds.

Maybe I’m an unrepentant NIN fan, but this is my favorite album covered by the series so far (though not above the Black Album by that much). It’s very clearly in the midpoint of The Downward Spiral and The Fragile, the latter of which I listen to regularly.

I’m trying to think of what type of game would be most appropriate for a NIN soundtrack with their current vibe. Maybe a vaguely unsettling point and click adventure game?

I thought this was a great episode! I really like the deep digressions into various aspects of the music industry that happen on this show.

I happen to be a big Nine Inch Nails, Doom/Quake, AND Albummer fan. This episode made me realize playing Quake at 14 is probably the reason I got into Nine Inch Nails in the first place. But here’s my take: the Quake 2 soundtrack (by Sonic Mayhem) is better. I love Reznor and the first Quake, but I never remember much about the soundtrack. But the soundtrack to the second game sticks with me even after all these years.

Anyhow, great show! I look forward to it every week :)

The opening track is so amazing. One of the greatest openings of all time. Quake is legendary.

LIstening to them flailing in talking about Quake the game while talking about the album REALLY has me looking forward to the Sonic Adventure episode.

EDIT: Given that John Carpenter did a Top 10 list once (twice?) for Giant Bomb, I guess that technically means Jordan and John Carpenter are COLLEAGUES.

EDIT 2: He did a couple top lists, but not top 10s. Here's one of them, tho.

I hope they put that alternate ending to The Last of Us in the HBO adaptation.

Trent Reznor hanging out with David Lynch while wearing his Quake t-shirt.

Edit: Jordan was right, Trent Reznor won TWO Academy Awards.

2011 - The Social Network

2021 - Soul

And he was nominated for Mank.

Edit2: The Quake soundtrack on vinyl is still available on NIN's store. Reznor remastered it a few years ago specifically for vinyl. Also, it's on black vinyl.

I need them to go back to never mentioning video games because when Jordan asked if Quake came before Doom I nearly collapsed onto my fainting couch.

Credit to Drew for including the context that 'actual' music in video games was rare 1996. Quake gameplay was pretty damn revolutionary at the time and the soundtrack felt like a great complement.

Jeremy is a Mario Party fan... Dan Ryckert's ears just perked up.

Jon Sudano is super talented, love to see him on the show.

RIP Katie

Reznor did in fact win Oscars for both The Social Network and Soul, he's definitely a two time Academy Award winner

I do in fact love the Quake OST and there is a definitely a line between it and the music I currently listen to.

If you are interested in another sort of ambient Video game ost I have to heavily recommend the Diablo II OST by Matt Uelman (apparently it was my most listened to album in 2020)

I would have loved to be in the producers meeting for that movie Soul:

"So we've got this animated movie about jazz, who should we get for the soundtrack?"

"I was thinking Trent Reznor?"

".... name's not ringing a bell...."

"You know, the "fuck you like an animal" guy?"

"Oh him?!? Awesome choice, let's bring him in"

(not knocking him or his soundtrack, I just would love to hear that conversation)

There’s a whole lot I could say about this episode. Instead I’m just going to post this picture of me from 1997.

I buy vinyl exclusively to listen to. Not to just collect, display or, heaven forbid, invest. I do display them tho. But the Quake soundtrack is an exception. I bought that one just because it's cult and I want it on my record shelf. Also to support Trent I guess. But you kind of forgot to mention that there is actually one song on the album. The title track is actual music!

I'm glad Jeremy referenced the Edwin Diaz entrance because I forgot to look it up after he mentioned it on Gen Loss, and it fucking rules! An entire show unto itself.
