Giant Bomb Presents: Alex and Austin Talk About Pixels

giant bomb needs to bring back the box office bomb and let the site evolve into all the guys passions, its already video games and wrestling, the more movie and tv talk the better, i don't think anyone would mind

An interesting angle to the movie's theme of "you didn't waste all that time gaming" is that technically sports fall into that same category. It would have been interesting for one of the characters to have an excuse to rant about how sports are "worthless entertainment" just like games, except sports players can make millions of dollars and become celebrities while pro gamers are mocked and derided by society. Or have a younger pro gamer on the team who learns to appreciate the arcade classics while the older washed-out gamers are jealous/thankful he has opportunities they didn't.

I really wish that they would just go ahead and bring back Screened.

Yeah, it's all kind of weird. Did you guys combine it with the Interview Dumptruck or something along those lines? I checked on both Pocket Casts and the iPhone Podcast app and the album art has changed to the Interview Dumptruck album art and it seems like the Interview Dumptruck feed is gone.

I'm subscribed on Pocket Casts and the most recent episode showing is the interview you did on Her Story. I actually unsub/resubscribed to try and fix it and now there is no album art at all in the player. While I'm subscribed, if I search for it on the store it has the Interview Dumptruck art, no episodes, and a green subscribe button that does nothing instead of a red unsubscribe button.

@austin_walker You bring up this idea of play as having some sort of intrinsic value in itself. Care to elaborate more? Studied a ton of ethics and valuation while doing my undergrad in Philosophy.

@bigd145: Not even that. It's for people who played arcade games in the 80s, then swore off "nerdy shit" and want to feel like they didn't waste their youth instead of accepting that everyone wastes their youth and/or that having fun isn't a waste.

Can we get one of these for a handful of other movies throughout the year? I mean I get Pixels is a spectacular trainwreck on every level but... I mean, I miss Box-Office Bomb. We don't need a full podcast in that form, just a post-movie wrap-up.

Loved the review and that intro music! The comparisons between this and Wreck It Ralph make me want to see Wreck It Ralph again.

I can only hope that Alex and Austin bought tickets to a different movie and then snuck into the Pixels theater.

Man, everything I've heard about this movie sounds like people just gave up on the idea and made it cause they had an obligation to or something. It sounds like literally EVERYONE phoned it in for this one.

Yeah, don't watch eXistenZ either. The movie about playing a VR game without any real objectives through a second butthole drilled in your spine.

Adam Sandler movies in a nutshell. Though I have to imagine there's a contingent of people who go to see his movies just so they can rant about it on youtube.

That was a tough listen. Of all the things I would expect Alex to not criticize harshly, a videogame movie starring Adam Sandler was dead last on my list.

I personally liked this movie discussion. Alex and Austin analyzed the film and gave a negative critique without being too heavy handed and hyperbolic. They had... nuanced opinions. *gasp* It's nice to see something like that on the internet for a change, haha.

@austin_walker: I'm also not seeing it. Pocket Casts on Android. I see it in the RSS feed here on the site, but for whatever reason it's not showing up in the feed on my player.

If it helps narrow down the issue, it showed up for me as a Beyondpod user sync'd through Feedly.

I appreciate that this podcast analytically ripped Pixels apart instead of just a bunch of shrill yelling like the internet is used to.

@austin_walker I did everything they did, as well, and got the same results. I even went a step further and straight-up put the RSS address in there and it still didn't come up. Artwork was right, but no sign of this podcast.

Showed up for me in DoggCatcher in Giant Bomb Presents.

Austin's assertion that this film could explore "the difference between old-school and new games" seems really silly to me because even if this movie weren't trash, that's a completely pointless thing for a movie to try and explore.

Whatever happened to that? I want more episodes!
