Not sure I'd say Bardock was attempting to save Kakarot, as it seemed that the baby was being jettisoned into space with or without his input anyway. Bardock didn't actually seem to even care about his kid until he saw his final vision of Goku vs. Freeza, but by that time he'd already been launched out. At least that's how it is in the TV special. I know DB Minus changes things but I choose to ignore that ^_^

@sevith said:

@primworm: Raditz' side was the truth as that's how saiyans operated.

There is one odd retcon that complicates things re: Bardock though. In the movie which that first scene is from, Bardock is "cursed" with the power to see the future by an alien that he just killed. This causes him to see the destruction of Planet Vegeta, which is what leads him to leading the rebellion against Frieza to try and stop that from happening. Before this happens, knowing that the planet will be blown up if he fails, Bardock makes sure that Goku gets sent off-world in time.

So, both are true. Raditz's side is true in that that was his original mission (kill all humans so the planet could then be sold off), but the timing of it (getting sent off right before the planet gets blown up) is a result of Bardock knowing the planet was going to get destroyed and wanting to make sure that Kakarot survived (the "Planet Krypton" approach).

None of that is canon. Goku literally just got sent out on a standard mission to eradicate the population of a weak planet. That's how it's already been explained in the first three episodes of Kai and in the manga. Goku was simply the right age (just born) while Frieza decided to destroy Planet Vegeta.

If you want to be even MORE confused, there is a much much (MUCH MUCH) later retconing of the story that was done in 2014.

http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Ball_Minus:_The_Departure_of_the_Fated_Child

In this it's even closer to the Superman story, where Bardock and Minus (Goku's mom) are there to send him away, and Bardock is very much worried about Freiza destroying the planet and sends Goku away. It totally recons the events in the bardock special though, and TBH I'm not even sure it's canon. Just felt like throwing another huge wrench into the whole thing.

Actually, her name is Gine. I'm not usually one to care about what's "canon" or not in Dragon Ball (I'm of the opinion that it all counts somehow, even GT), but Minus is the one exception I'll make to that rule as it directly contradicts an established personality of a character and in doing so adds nothing of value to the story; but that's just me.

Also, Kai is 100% the right choice. The filler is not good and it slows the show's pace to a crawl. Kai is Toriyama's true vision in color and motion.

While I see merit to skipping some filler; I, like most people in the US who watched DBZ, never saw original Dragon Ball until after watching the Saiyan/Freeza arcs. Coming into DBZ/Kai fresh with 0 prior knowledge you miss out on cool character moments/details that get taken for granted by people who've seen the shows before. My ideal would be if Kai was thoughtful about which fillers they'd use, and toss the ones that don't work. I know that without episodes like the one with the Pendulum room I wouldn't have developed any sort of attachment to the human characters, so seeing them all slaughtered one by one later on would have no impact.

I respect Toriyama as a master illustrator, but his original vision was pulling out stories out of his butt at the last minute to hit deadlines so his editor wouldn't have time to yell at him; there were improvements to be made - and sometimes Toei added interesting things to it. Other times they made Dragon Ball GT.

Hmm the Kami of Earth does say at a point he foresaw his death a year from then. And that his life is linked to that of Piccolo. (If one dies the other dies.) Plus Piccolo says he wants to conquer Earth, so logically he wouldn't want the two Saiyans to rule cause he would be helpless against them.

While this is true, Toriyama managed to inadvertently create one of the most compelling and consistently fulfilling manga series of all time. Yes, Dan and Jeff are going to miss out on certain character moments because they have no context for them, but they knew that going in and they've decided that Kai is a perfect fit not only because of its accuracy to the manga, but because it's a more manageable amount of episodes to commit to. If they were willing to spend the time to watch the "good filler", then they probably would've just watched the original Dragon Ball without it's filler to have the complete story. And while some like you may have a nuanced perspective on the DBZ filler, it seems like most pro-filler commenters just want them to watch that one episode where they try to get driver's licenses.

If any of the devs making DB games understood what it was really about, they would give you the option of making dinosaur or anthropomorphic animal people as characters.

On the subject of Bardock and Goku sent to earth to subjugate it: I haven't kept up with recons since i saw the original Bardock OVA when i was 12 or whatever. But my understanding is that ALL sayan children as an initiation are sent out to various planets to conquer them which is for most not really all that hard because if there is a moon even an infant can level cities by transforming.

Goku though was being prepped for his mission and all through the OVA Bardock is really disappointed that Goku is below average for a sayan child according to the readings. He changes his tune though after he was 'cursed' with a form of clairvoyance on one his missions resulting in him foreseeing the fall of planet vegeta and also knowing that his son will end up stupidly powerful as an adult.

As for goku making it out before the planet blows up, the launch procedure is automated and it just so happened that goku was launched off the planet just before it blew up.

No idea why people think Kai is good. The Remastered DVD Funimation version is the best with it's updated VO and Original Japanese music mixed in. In the later episodes Kai's battle music is awful and like many are saying they have skipped so much great character development.

I think you are referring to the Orange Bricks DVD releases which are the worst release of DBZ ever. Cropped to 16:9,horrible image quality that removed tons of the detail and made it look like a flash cartoon . Kai is essentially far more friendly to newcomers with the cut out filler which was mostly terrible and the dub is no joke, about 20 times superior and accurate to the manga. The voice actors have also gained a ton of experience over the years of acting where as in the original they were amateurs by that point. The original dub was a incoherent mess and ruined some character like Freeza who sounds like a chain smoker grandma in the original dub.

DBZ has some advantages but those advantages are not from the Orange Brick releases or from the original dub. Nah Kai is 100% the right choice for this podcast.

Love the Krillin hate going on so far. Even though I love Krillin myself! ^_^

I guess most of the love for Krillin comes from OG Dragon Ball. He was Goku's training buddy and he has an evolution as a character. One of my favorite parts of DB is the time he has to fight Goku in the Budokai Tournament.

Ahhh... DBZ is great, but there's nothing like early DB, really. It's a pity the anime is so hard to watch by today's standards.

Also, somebody please do a DBZ training montage with Eye of the Tiger for @danryckert.

Don't forget that time Krillin fought Jackie Chun but they were so fast they they had to explain and reenact everything in slow motion because no one could see what happened

I'm so glad I jumped on the Dragon Boxes when I did. I get that Kai supposedly sticks closer to the manga, but it's taking an existing product and retrofitting it in a way that seems like they're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The pacing of the manga makes sense because it's a comic book, and that doesn't necessarily translate well into animation; but I agree that as a fast track to watching all of Dragon Ball Z, this is probably the way to go. The other way would be a curated list of episodes of original DBZ, but who has the time to make or read through that?

Not all babies, just the weaker ones. The stronger ones (like Vegeta) are raised on planet and trained to be Saiyan elites; unless they're too strong like Broly.

Speaking of filler, I think it would've been amazing if more media followed the anime filler route.

Imagine a world where TV version Game of Thrones had to wait for George R.R. Martin to finish the print version before they could meaningfully advance the story. Just an entire season of Jon Snow's misadventures and hijinks while running along Serpent Road, while Arya searches for the Dragon Balls and Khal Drogo goes to driving school.

Arya's training in Bravos was basically filler.

why exactly is mr popo a "problem"? you're talking about a world where there are animal people walking around, quite literally; is it just because he's all black? what's to say he's even human? also why everything has to be racial? all I can do to discussions like this is roll my eyes.

@xevabis: yeah! I was going to comment. That he does run into issues. Also little detail that Kai cuts out completely is the fact that Goku falls of the snake road when he falls asleep onto of a road cleaner ogre's street cleaning truck. He falls down to hell and meets two ogres whom he has to outsmart to get back onto the road. He does. but the ogres troll him and he ends up having to start all over again from the beginning of the snake road. The ogres lead him to a tunnel that makes him come out of a drawer of king yama's desk.

Wow, sounds like Kai cuts out a lot of character development and fun moments. I think much of the "filler" has been my favorite stuff in Z, so far.
