Never did I think that one of the things I'd look forward to on a Monday was a DBZ podcast, but here we are.

Fun fact: In the original version of DBZ the 1 year's worth of training amounted to an ACTUAL one year's worth of episodes that got released weekly in Japan.

I'm just fucking with you, no idea if that is in any way true.

Edit: Apparently, it was just 2 and a half months. Episode 21.

still yet to watch any dragonball, listening to this is like learning a new language, culture.. and I'm loving it!

So all systems are not quite Goku on this episode... What a twist!!

Jeff Gerstmann strikes me as the kinda guy who would have watched the original Dragon Ball series as a kid and thought Z was bullshit

Re: the redub - the script in Kai is very different from the original dub. I recall Chris Sabat (voice of Vegeta and producer) saying in an interview that when they dubbed the show for Cartoon Network in the mid-90, the English distributor (Funimation) was told to dumb down dialogue, slow down speech etc so kids would understand what was going on. With Kai, they had no such limitations, so the script is more faithful to the original Japanese and the dialogue is snappier.

I fucking howled when Jeff & Dan compared the Dragonball Heroes to the NWO B-Team especially when he said Yamcha had an excellent career in Japan(original Dragonball) like that’s so FUCKING RIGHT!!! It’s uncanny the way they can tie anything to 90s wrestling like holy diver!

Also owning a Yamcha shirt is basically like owning a Bo Dallas shirt, i.e. of course people own them and it’s an inside way of saying “I’m Cool”

Ocean dub Vegeta had a better voice.

Also to roll with the DBZ is wrestling theme Vegeta is Dean Ambrose “not as good” and fails the eye test big time yet has “It factor” for days and is WAY fucking over with everyone except the smarks. They even have the same hair and confusing marriage.

It's early to bring this up but I feel like the special 'History of Trunks' is essential viewing. From what I can tell it isn't put into Kai, so ideally they'd need to seek it out.

IMO the best time to watch 'History of Trunks' would be after Kai episode 54 and before 55.

Regarding their comment that this show doesn't seem to have a lot of blood, I don't know if anyone mentioned this before but Dragon Ball Kai toned down the violence and removed almost all of the blood and some skin scratches, the original DBZ had much more blood and felt more violent overall.

Yamcha's cool as shit. DBZ aired in the US years before the original Dragon Ball did so a bunch of kids see Yamcha die once early in the series without any context or emotional attachment and the poor guy is doomed to an eternal reputation full of lousy memes of him being a weak loser, even though Goku dies way more times than he does.

I love so so much, that Dan “gets it” with dragonball that the wrestling similarities are helping make it all stick for him

@johnymyko: I'm at the world tournament later in the series, and a certain character gets pummelled for pretty much a whole episode. There's a sequence where she's getting punched relentlessly like 20 times in a row, with blood gushing all over her face. Intense violence seemed pretty intact there.

I watched the first 6 seasons regularly and moved to Kai for the end. Kai is fine.

@johnymyko: The original airings of DBZ in the US in the 90s also cut out all the blood. Originally, you had to watch Toonami's Midnight Run if you wanted "uncut" DBZ which was even then only slightly redder. I distinctly remember when the original Cartoon Network broadcast got to the part where Goku gets to Namek (it was a big "new episodes!" event after years of reruns) they loosened up on the blood censorship a bit. I think Kai is using all of the old edited footage for some reason.

@johnymyko: That was only for the version that aired on Nickelodeon. The Blu-Ray release and what has been airing on Adult Swim does not have those edits - that one shot with Raditz seems like one of the few edits that actually is in the Blu-Ray cut. Here's a screenshot that I just took of that opening scene in the first episode of Kai:

In Mexico there is a parody series where Goku is doctor and Yamcha, Nappa and Puar start cooking senzu bean based meth.

As I said, they didn't remove ALL the blood, only in some parts. It is well known that they did that. But Kai is still fine, I never said otherwise.

I guess maybe that's why some people don't see the difference, because they grew up with the censored versions? In my country we only got the original and it was definitely more bloody.

@johnymyko:I read somewhere that the director choose to exclude bloody scenes so it could be easily marketable to other markets, without putting the strain on distribution companies to edit out the blood and stuff. Most of the times they do an awful job.

I've watched ahead. Jeff, Dan... NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS YOU MUST GET TO MR. SATAN. I forgot how incredible he is. You have quite a ways to go but no matter how you feel about the show at the time (which stays great) it'll be so worth it. I PROMISE.

EDIT: Also, Vegeta's voice gets very over the top Jeff. Give it time as he's very subdued at the start.

EDIT EDIT: Also, part of what makes this podcast so great is Jeff and Dan's lack of knowledge about original DB.

@alvarofaraujo: Are you kidding? I would absolutelylive in a desert with my pet flying cat, being a bandit. That sounds cool as hell. People keep bringing up him bring afraid of girls but that's just one of the many unique character details that Dragon Ball used to be known for and the silly and humanizing humor that helped make the original story so endearing.

I wonder what will be their opinion of Vegeta as the series goes on. He ends being the most developed character of the franchise but he starts as a total douche, but yeah, he goes over the top real fast so dont worry Jeff.

@garwalk: Living all alone with no TV, Internet, in a desert, waiting to prey on travelers. He has a cool design, but thats it. I don't really like his motivations as a character. In my opinion Krillin is much cooler than Yamcha, remember his first appearance, with that sick jump from the boat to the kame island. That was SICK
