This is truly the best time to be watching Dragon Ball Z.

So Trunks is part Kyle Reese and part John Connor, but not definitively either. And he's not quite Marty McFly either. So we're essentially in an amalgamation of Terminator and Back to the Future in terms of timeline shenanigans.

Thoroughly enjoyable set of episode. Yamcha (Yamucha) is the ultimate red shirt. What a LOSER!

I forgot how dumb all of the innocent deaths this whole arc are after hearing Bulmas obvious easy way out of using the dragon, only for everyone to essentially respond with "nah we'd rather just fight". They should all be IN JAIL.

Does anyone else think its strange that the anime (or possibly just the Dub version) never gave the Androids (read: Cyborgs) their real names back? Apparently 17 is Lapis and 18 is Lazuli.

I don’t even like Yamcha but hearing them get off onto a Yamcha hate tangent for the 5th time in the same episode gets tiring.

I love how they hate Goku but love Vegeta when not only does he go along with this (of course it's a trope) but he does the absolute dumbest shit for the rest of Z and most of them are not involving Goku. Goku does dumb shit but Vegeta is way worse.

We can't let them activate the androids. Lets them awaken.

We can't let Android 18 get absorbed by cell. Lets it happen.

@vicious17: Those names were made up on the spot by Toriyama way, way after the fact. Specifically, the characters appeared in the manga in 1991, and Toriyama didn't give them those names until 2014.

Even in media created after that time, like DB Super, everyone refers to them as 17/18.

Didn't Toriyama reveal their names for the first time a few years ago along with Goku's mother's name? So no, not really.

I think it's because Goku wants to protect his loved ones, while Vegeta doesn't give a shit. So what Goku did is kinda dumb. Vegeta and other pure blooded saiyans are also similar.

But Goku is real dumb when it comes to non-fighting stuff.

I would love to see their reactions to all the character interactions in FighterZ once they have finished all of DBZ Kai. There is so many cool references and in jokes in those :D

Really funny episode this week!

The Red Ribbon connection is kinda weird. They were this big evil army that were the main opponents of an arc back in OG Dragonball. During one of his fights against them, Goku encounters a pleasant Frankenstein-looking android they made named Android 8, who helps him out for a chapter or two(I think the "android" art of this whole thing is a mistranslation? Most of the "androids" in this show are cyborgs, I think the Japanese just reads "artificial humans"). He also defeats an enemy android modeled on the Terminator.

However, Dr. Gero is never mentioned until Dragonball Z, and nothing is made of the fact that the Red Ribbon Army made artificial humans. It's a world with anthros and dinosaurs and stuff, it didn't warrant much of an explanation. That Toriyama even remembered is pretty baffling to me, 'cause he's not the kinda author that does a lot of callbacks. Anyway, it's cool as a callback, but since none of these new guys ever made an appearance back then it's not like seeing old friends again.

I just keep getting reminded of how much i hate this arc. It has a great setup but it goes to shit insanely fast. Definitely my least favorite arc of both DB and DBZ and i have a feeling it's more popular in the US than anywhere else in the world but it's all, anecdotal.

I just want to post this video because I think about it a lot.

@elite49: I'll give props to Toriyama for recognizing that writing a battle manga with a magical macguffin available at almost any time is basically impossible so instead of ignoring it he acknowledges it by simply making the characters the biggest dipshits of all time. RIP millions of innocent humans.

I guess by "watching all of Kai" means theyll get through the Buu sagas as well.

@vicious17: Tru dat. Cell arc is more of a thriller / suspense, rather than just pure action. Also, you get to see many of the Z-Fighters grow into better form.

RE Training non-Super Saiyan for Goku; I kind of like the logic that the TFS guys have, that Super Saiyan is just a force multiplier of whatever base stats you have. Therefore say Super Saiyan Goten wouldn't be a match for Vegeta in the Namek Saga, for example.

@vicious17: They never become human though? When they wish on the dragon for them to become human again, Shenron says that he can't do it because they're more powerful than him. A result of the whole "Shenron is only as powerful as his creator" thing. Lapis and Lazuli are the names of the humans that were turned into 17 and 18, but like how Doctor Gero refers to himself as Android 20, they have become "new" people.

@toug: As a new fan of DBZ (thanks to this podcast) and a longtime wrestling fan, I believe this is as close as we're getting to a Vegeta push. Goku's heart virus medication is on the banned substances list and he just got popped for a 30 day suspension. I hope Vegeta gets a good run in the meantime because we all know this is Goku's show and Goku always goes over.

I wonder if the "Trunks white/gray hair" thing is a colour-blindness thing on the part of Jeff (idk about Dan though) it's definitely a light purple colour.

Anyway I really enjoy the ASG episodes of this current saga so far, it starts out as a little bit of a slow build but there's a lot of cool moments that happen along the way. At the end of these next sets of episodes they start hinting about where this saga is going, specifically with Cell, and it's some really cool stuff that's just really creepy.

Also hope that The Final Chapters is eventually part of the blu-rays they are acquiring because I really like that whole series too, plus the tournaments are something I realised I just really enjoy in DB.

I consider this whole thing to just be The Cell arc, since stuff does not wrap up fully with the Andriods (Cyborgs) and it goes bad as soon as the mystery surrounding Cell is revealed, because characters keep doing incredibly dumb shit from then on. Cell becomes just a lamer version of Freeza with not a hint of personality in his later forms. The fighting becomes repetitive. The time travel aspect creates multiple plot-holes and missed opportunities. The RoSaT (Hyperbolic Time Chamber in the dub) is the biggest ass pull and plot convenience device this series ever pulls. Gohan being the one to finish off Cell is lame, because he spends the entire arc being a background character, as a result it feels completely unearned. Vegeta was at his best in the Freeza arc and is at his worst in the Cell arc. Android 16 is the definition of wasted potential. The list goes on and on and on...

There just a slew of crap in the Cell arc and as far as i can tell it's only popular in the US but everywhere else, most seem to consider Cell to be a garbage tier villain. Allot of this probably has to do with how much the original dub fucked up the Freeza's arc and Freeze's voice, specifically and not airing OG DB first before Z in the states. Because the tone of the Cell arc is also really at odds with the rest of the franchise and i'm not a fan of it at all.
