"I like seeing Mr. Satan worrying about being strong and bumbling into things working out for him. "- I was hoping this would be the case and I can't wait later episodes.
Boy, the value of human life has really gone done with the existence of Dragon Balls, people are cracking jokes moments after Vegeta kills dozens of people. Also, the Dabura fight was on an Earth-like planet, not Earth itself.
I forgot to order the part two Blu-ray. I didn't realize that this week would only cover the last three episodes of part one. I'll have to watch 122 and 123 before jumping in on this podcast.
This was a really good ASG episode of a really good set of DBZ episodes; Vegeta's turn and his speech especially is one of my series' highlights and I'm glad they took to it (also glad the dub didn't butcher it with corny lines or anything).
I think the dub voice for Buu is a bit grating, it doesn't have that good raspy undertone to it that the JP voice does, but I guess it remains to see if it bothers Dan and Jeff.
My read on Majin Vegeta is that withstanding Babidi's spell meant he's not quite as evil as he says he is. They mention earlier when Dabra is charging for the Gohan fight that the more evil someone is the more susceptible they'll be to the mind-control spell; so I reckon, along with his single-mindedness about fighting Goku, that the good in him is what kept Vegeta from Babidi's control.
Vegeta's care for his family gives him some more dimensionality and it grew me to like him more as a character.
I think by the time these episodes were coming out, due to the extreme lag between the Japanese debut and the US debut AND the burgeoning of the internet, the Buu unveiling wasn't a surprise. Everyone had that one friend who was pirating tapes from Japan.
So, Gohan was always my favorite character. Going all the way back from headbutting Raditz all the way to killing Cell with the most badass Kamehameha, seeing him come into his own was what kept me watching and enjoying the show. So, seeing how his arc goes stagnant and he gets more lame is a huge part of why I don’t like the Buu saga much (the high school/Saiyaman stuff is genuinely great though).
This Goku and Vegeta fight is the highlight of the saga though and I’m glad they enjoyed it.
Can't wait to hear their reaction to *what Vegeta does*
After hearing what they appreciated about these episodes, I don't think they'll be as enthused about it as most people expect them to be, although I don't think they quite see it coming. They didn't really see him wiping out like a third of the people in that stadium along with anyone unfortunate enough to be behind that section of stadium.
I'm glad someone called out how awesome the animation is in the Vegeta vs. Goku fight, though. The best parts of the Buu saga are when they bump the animation way up and everything looks incredible.
I think their opinions of this show going forward are going to be all over the place. There are some things I'm almost certain they'll enjoy ("Human extinction attack!?", Fat Buu and Mr Satan becoming pals) and some others they're going to hate (Gotenks, Vegito, everything Super Buu).
Finally they arrive to the BEST Vegeta moment, on the whole series
Majin Vegeta is my favorite DBZ character for the sole reason that in DBZ Budokai 3, you could turn Vegeta into Majin by equiping the majin capsule and letting Vegeta fall down to 1 HP bar. Since it converted Vegeta into M.V. you gained new moves and special. The best part: you could equip a cpasule of senzu bean (that replenishes HP to a full bar) and pop it when you tranform. That way you could stay Majin with full hp bars. IT WAS GREAT
EDIT: How dare you @danryckert: 18 is the Smartest, she married the strongest and kindest human, Krillin is so much smarter than Goku. I so wish you guys would watch the first Series, where Goku meets Krillin and they become best friends.
@alvarofaraujo: Agreed on 18, Krillin is a good husband and father. This is further seen in Super, where their marriage makes a lot more sense as they give it more screen time. She's definitely smarter than most of the DBZ characters, like Bulma is science smart but still makes a lot of dumb decisions.
Man you used to down to the local anime store and you would see Maijin Buu action figures staring at you right next to the silk screened Goku shirts. Then you would go home and look up those spoilers on the fansites, and then mom would get mad at you because you accidentally clicked on the link that took you to the special section with the DBZ and Sailor Moon "crossover".
My love for the DBZ talk is clashing with my absolute hate for wrestling in this podcast, and the wrestling talk has been steadily increasing over time..
The Goku/Majin Vegeta fight is the best in the series. It's one of the first, other than Freeza VS Super Saiyan Goku, where the fighters are actually, evenly matched and it's JUST brutal.
I dunno man, this stretch of episodes got old for me too. Feels like they don't edit down anything anymore.
The original run of DBZ from the start through the Cell saga is 194 episodes. In Kai, this is cut down to 98 episodes, about 50%.
In contrast, the start of the Saiyaman saga through the end of the show in the original run of DBZ is about 97 episodes. This gets cut down to about 69 episodes in Kai, a reduction of only about 30%.

Haven't listened to this episode yet, but I've been feeling the exact same way lately. I think it's ok when they notice some parallels between the two or when they pretend Mr. Satan is a Wrestling character. But when they go off on long tangents about some stuff only wrestling fans know about, it starts to be a bit much. It's even more disappointing when they spend so much time talking about wrestling to the point they rush their talk about DBZ on this DBZ podcast.
edit: I've listened to the whole episode and the amount of wrestling talk was fine for this one, it wasn't as bad as the last couple they did before.

Yeah I checked back in on this ep after skipping for a while, and it's reached 1:1 recap of event / comparable wrestling reference
I'm a big wrestling fan. I got 100% of the references this week. There's still way too much of it for me.
But I also feel they lean into it because it's fun for them and a tweak on the nose to those of us who don't like it as much. (see: 'frietza' becoming a thing)
another great podcast. Im ok with the wrestling talk...kinda like it. Question for the fans. Is there any other good podcast of anime first time viewers. Its really nice to relive your childhood or first experience with good anime stories (hunter x hunter, full metal, trigun, death note, jo jo, etc.) The best i got was those short kids react videos but im looking for something in the vain of all systems goku in that the people are new to anime and giving it a glance while being unaware of the tropes. Jeff and crew kinda eased their way in with wrestling and metal gear :)
