I'm pretty sure I'll spend the season without watching a single race and still be excited to listen to the dudes talk about it.

Yeah! This is just what I need after some dark-ass Ground Zeroes this morning. Need something light hearted.

I imagine that driving in the Outback is NUTS!

This was such a fun race. Even the crazy little things like Jenson losing his nose tip and his feet getting a cold blast for the rest of the race. I'm already hyped for Kuala Lumpur! Hopefully Raikkonen and Kobayashi have more more luck there.

I didn't see it because it was over by the time I woke up but the thing I like the most is how much people are crying over the 2014 car noise. I think the 2014 cars sound like WW2 turboprop engines and it's fucking amazing.

@monkfishesq: Yeah, I really don't get the complaints about the engine noise. I'll take exciting, unpredictable racing, and turbos that mean that drivers are tested more than they have been recently, over loud engine noise.

@hassun: You know, it says 'highlights', but I watched it anyway, and it was 2+ hours long and seemed to include the entire race.

Looking forward to this, will be a nice companion to the season. Remember, F1 is about the intrigue as much as the racing!

I haven't watched F1 since the early 2000s, and I'm getting back into it thanks to Drew and Danny. The engine noise is ... different. I can see why people might not like it, but they'll get over it.

RE: not knowing what's going on when you are at an F1 Race: Most (I'd guess ALL) F1 races have a local radio broadcast that has the commentary, positions, lap times,.... Most people who go there carry some kind of walkman to listen to it. The first time I went I didn't know that either, and was pretty confused when I had not yet seen a car pass 10 minutes after the race was supposed to start. Turns out pretty much everyone crashed in the first corner, not very unusual at Francorchamps :D

Thank you so much for doing this podcast. I love cars and I love racing games but I've never gotten in to F1 due to the initial, fan learning curve. This podcast has started to fix that, and thus my horrid newb-ness, and I am SO excited to get into F1 this season!

I work at a sports bar and someone actually requested the F1 race to be put on. I've worked there for 8 years now and never has someone requested that. This podcast must be having far-reaching affects.

Are people who think F1 is all about the cars being loud as shit stupid? I think they are...Anyway the V6 sounds better.

@dannyodwyer@drewbert: tip to identify the different drivers from the same team, the first driver (No 1 driver) will have a Red (black I think this year) camera pod at the top of the car, and the second driver will be coloured yellow/orange

imagine being a vettel or hamilton fan during the last race, and turning off in a rage when they retired, what a mental way to watch f1.

have your favourites sure, defintely cheer the underdog, but being a supporter of a driver/team? wrong way to watch it. almost as crazy as caring about the sounds

Being in Melbourne, the new engine noise was indeed disappointing... you couldn't hear the cars for miles around like you usually can. Pretty disappointing. While watching the delayed (30 seconds maybe) telecast from my home I could tell when a break was called or the like as the noise would stop prior to it happening on screen. Pretty funny stuff. Now you can't hear anything :(

as far as the favorites go, i'd like to see either Massa or Hamilton to win the championship, i think it'll be a shame if Hamilton never wins another championship because its pretty clear hes very talented and he always seems to have pretty bad luck (relatively frequent mechanical failures and punctures or even computer failures). As for Massa, hes just a great driver and deserves to win just as a f-u to ferrari for the way they've kinda been bad to him past few years. I wouldn't mind seeing Alonso win another one as well, just coz hes such a consistant pro.

its always fun to see the rookies do well as well, and i really hope that someone other than red bull win the constructors championship.

It's a shame about Ricciardo. We will just have to wait until the court case.

here is my tip for finding a favorite driver. just watch a few races and you'll find someone you like. I am a Alonso fan, he stated racing the same year i was old enough to get really interested in the sport. have been a fan of his for 10+ years now! so find someone you like, this year is probably a good year to ind a rookie to root for.

Great podcast once again. Watched this race as my first F1 race in about a decade, and really enjoyed it even though I was extremely tired.

I've never ragequit on a race just because the guy I like went out, so I think supporting a driver or team (when I was a kid I was a Williams fan) is totally fine. I think part of it is being into more than one guy; I was a Rubens Barrichello fan from his first season at Jordan, but there's always other guys that I like to see do well. Right now I'm not hugely into anybody, though I like Kobayashi based on past exploits, I particularly remember a race at Suzuka in maybe 2009 or 2010 where he just passed so many people at the same corner, the hairpin at turn 11. So god damn fearless in the car!

In fact here we go, just enjoy this guy. Few guys on the grid today are so willing to take risks, without causing chaos.

I'm curious if the people who lost their shit when Kobayashi crashed in turn 1 were all new to the sport. Crashes in the first turn of the race happen relatively often and this really wasn't the big deal some people made it out to be.

Also, I think it would be a cool idea to have Drew play the track of an upcoming race during Unprofessional Friday before a race weekend.

The best part about this podcast is that I haven't got years of backlogs which I also want to listen to and end up never getting around to finishing any. Which seems like a strange compliment now I've written it down, actually. And probably isn't the best part.
