Gee Danny, why don't you tell us how you really feel? I don't dislike Hill/Herbert. Hell, I'd take them over the NBC dudes in a heartbeat. Let's trade?

Fun Silverstone tridbit: Herbert was an unlikely winner in '95 for Benetton, and the mechanic that set up his car for that race was Steve Matchett, who does the NBC commentary.

I do increasingly think that Brundle (and the fact BBC only get half the races) is the only reason I watch the sky coverage

I mean, I despise Eddie Jordan, but I can kind of put up with the rest of the BBC for the lack of Damon Hill and Johnny Herbert

Now, if we end up with a team of Brundle, Button, and Coulthard, with special guests Webber and Raikonnen in the future, I'd watch that every race

In race related news, man I got so excited at the start of the race when suddenly Williams, I think they should've taken the initiative with their pit stops as soon as massa would've gotten ahead of the hulk, but hindsight is always 20/20

That pit by Lewis was clutch. I was thinking he certainly made the wrong decision and we were having a repeat of Monaco.

best cast of the weeeeeeeeeeeeek

edit: WHAT?!

Danny shits on Herbert and Hill and says Brundle knows his stuff???? Brundle knows how to talk when Hill is a little awkward. Hill won a fucking championship and Bundle literally never won anything ever in his life. I know who I am more inclined to believe when race talk happens.

I quite like the BBC casting team. Danny should give them a try if he can. I've heard lots of Brundle on both Sky and ITV watching older F1 seasons, and I think I prefer David Coulthard to him. Eddie Jordan is okay, but I think Coulthard is much better.

Kimi should do commentary after he retires.

Other person: "Oh man what an overtake! Kimi! What'd you think"

Kimi: "Uhhhhhhhhh, it was okay I guess"

Being a good driver is wildly different from being an insightful colour commentator/analyst.

Pretty interesting race in the end. This was my first time watching the BBC (through a proxy), because I canceled my cable and no longer have NBC Sports. Frankly, I MUCH preferred it to the American coverage. It was great, no commercials, commentary was decent...Eddie Jordan can be insufferable, but everyone thinks that guy is a clown, so I'm not alone there.

Speaking of that NASCAR crash, if you're ever curious why Dale Jr. is such a popular driver, despite not being "the best" (he's still very good):

Loading Video...

Crosses the finish line, and his immediate thought isn't "Woo I won the race" it was "Oh god is everyone alright". The team didn't even glad slap each other on the radio until he got the call that everyone was fine.

I'm not a huge NASCAR fan, but Dale Jr. is a pretty alright dude.

e: Sorry, linked the wrong video, it's right now.

I'm not complaining, just curious but why is that Giant Bomb Quick Looks have like 3 different systems to back them up while they record it but the podcasts are relying on some shitty "podcast computer" that seems to shit the bed every few weeks?

@nightriff: I was really wanting to know that myself so I put in a little research, I originally thought it was Daniel Cormier but quickly realized that it simply couldn't be due to who he has actually fought in the UFC

Long story short it's Eddie Gordan and Josh Samman from UFC 181

That doesn't really explain anything. How is it possible that they seemingly accelerate way faster than the everyone else?

@LunarJetman: @asantosbr: @rvone: Yeah, I'm still confused. It was barely a few seconds into the race, everyone's hitting the accelerator...how on earth did this happen? While we're on the topic, what are the variables that determine a great/poor start?

@amyggen: Honestly, that's the only sense I can make of this footage at the moment!

Clutch and tire temperature are crucial at race start having the right setting for the ‘Race Start’ engine mapp is also important and can change from track to track and weather conditions.

Both Mercedes had a bad start were as Williams nailed it.

As evident from the transcript

FLLewis HamiltonUnknownPulling away was quite poor, lots of wheelspin at the pull-away. Initial part was too aggressive as well.
FLUnknownLewis HamiltonCopy that Lewis. So tyres are 95 fronts and rear, keep working them.
FLTony RossNico RosbergFeedback on the start please.
FLNico RosbergTony RossSlightly under-engaged, the start.
FLLewis HamiltonUnknownGrip is really poor on the grid, pretty similar to the other day.
FLUnknownLewis HamiltonAffirm. Go strat five, brake balance and b-mig for turn one. I’ll tell you when to do the bite point.

Great podcast as always, guys.

Since F1 has a bit of a break, you guys should check out some of the IMSA stuff from Bowmanville, ON (where they held the F1 Canadian Grand Prix before Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was built) this weekend. There's the Tudor United Sports Car series which runs two prototype classes and two touring car classes, and the Continental Tires Sports Car Challenge which runs two classes of sports cars which are less modified. The racing is fantastic, definitely worth a watch, and there's a team in the Tudor series who runs these crazy things http://www.deltawingracing.com/.

They stream for free at http://www.imsa.com/ their commentary is usually by Radio Le Mans who are awesome.

@edmundus: Mercedes is considered to have "the best" car in F1 at the moment but Lewis Hamiltion (the arguable number one driver on the team and maybe the sport) has been reporting issues with his clutch. F1 cars are all semi-automatic now-a-days, but the clutch is crucial for quality starts. It's possible the issue was, to some degree, a mechanical issue with both Mercedes' clutch mechanisms. Though Felipe Massa (one of the Williams' drivers who has been kicking around F1 for a decade or so) is well known for his high quality starts---so it's probable a mix of things.

I could not have been saltier about the way this race ended. It went from unbelievable hype at the start to looking like none of that ever happened. I had a glimmer of hope when Rosberg was just eating Hamilton alive just before the proper inter changes but then even that fizzled into gray rainy disappointment.

I hope this is a glimpse of Williams becoming a threat and staying a threat throughout the rest of the season. I want a three way fight!

@dannyodwyer Obviously, you'd have to get the F1 drivers to take part in CBS's own The Amazing Race. Racing (of a sort), drama, and wasteful money spending, everything F1 loves!
