@stanek1: The MGS universe is such fantastical nonsense that it's basically magic, but whenever an explanation for something is given it's always technology based, usually involving nanomachines (e.g. what @quantris said). Maybe the bees got infected with nanomachines when they stung The Pain and that's how he controls them?

@jaytee00: There were no nanomachines in WW2. Also how does that explain the MULTIPlE confirmed ghosts?

@stanek1: Kojima seems to prefer pseudo-scientific technological explanations for things but, yeah, you could be right. There are plenty of unexplained things that could be magical/mystical. It's all so far removed from reality that I don't worry about it and just enjoy the ride.

edit: and I guess that ghosts are just a things that exist in that universe, but all* the superpowers etc. are tech based

*probably all I ain't no MGS scholar

@jaytee00: Yeah, you really have to just take it as he gives it to you. If you don't you'll just be buried under a mountain of questions.

Knuckles is pretty great. Unlike Sonic, he doesn't chuckle.

Good job Navarro. Go raid Wily's conquering the world party next time around! Also can someone tell me how Vinny and Dan got this sudden admiration for Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed? I mean cool because that alongside Crash Team Racing are probably the best "non-Mario Kart" cart racers, but I never saw any videos of them playing the game.

I'm glad that they got to experience the hot-bullshit Rush Jet part on that second Doc Robot level.

That part specifically is the main reason I'm reluctant to put Mega Man 3 over Mega Man2, even if I generally like the stage and boss design of the former better.

I have fond memories of MM3 as a kid. Got it for Christmas the year it came out. Was poking at the different stages w/o any weakness or strategy knowledge (as well as spending some time w/ other games I got that year). But then on New Years Eve day, I finally defeated my first Robot Master (I forget who) and that just seemed to get the ball rolling for me. That win led to more wins on New Years Eve and then when I woke up on New Years Day, I finished the rest and defeated Dr. Wily.

I also later figured out the "secret" to the MM3 save system. One dot was always tied to your number of E-tanks (so it's possible to start w/ 4 E-tanks). And then different grid points were tied to what bosses were defeated (some grid points would double up w/ red vs blue dots)

In MGSV it's explained that Parasites are the Nanomachines of WW2. All the ghosts, superpowers and weird bee people can be explained with parasites.

The biggest point of contention in Metal Gear lore is how Psycho Mantis' ghost still dies in MGS4 after they patched in rumble support. That's just plain ridiculous.

@rejizzle: I thought the parasites just like "ate voices" or whatever. Nevermind. MetalGear is magic and that's it.

It's clear Dan didn't go to class as a film studies major haha. One of the very first things we learned in my couple of film classes was about the hero's journey.

I'm pretty sure I remember Knuckles digging and climbing in Sonic Adventure 2.

There are definitely story elements connecting the original Mega Man series to X and X to Zero. I'm pretty sure ZX is supposed to take place in the future of Zero and Legends is supposed to take place far (very, very, very, very far) in the future of ZX, but I'm not a hundred percent sure on that one because I haven't played these games in a long time. I don't think Battle Network and that DS spin off of Battle Network have anything to do with the other series.

As I understand it, the Battle Network series is a split timeline wherein Dr. Light and Dr. Wily developed networking and AI technology rather than robots, so they went into sick internet land instead of dystopian robot land. Star Force is a sequel to Battle Network where they ported the internet to EM technology (radio internet, let's go) and got heavy into space.

I started Seveneves recently and got distracted a few chapters in. Not sure I'm a Neal Stephenson fan.

"No magic in Metal Gear." Remember that time Fortune deflected missiles with the soul of her dead father after Ocelot had turned off her deflection device? No? Ok.

Also Robin Hobb is the worst. Liveship Traders starts promisingly and immediately squanders anything good. Farseer does literally everything in it's power to end as unsatisfyin‎gly as possible.

I love the Sonic games series as much as the next guy; but any attempts at establishing a lore for this series is wrong and always results in terrible things.

They go pretty far out of their way to imply that the Sorrow is actually a ghost and Psycho Mantis is actually a psychic.

Oryx and Crake - I bought this in an airport on my way to Vegas for a few days. I ended up staying in one of the nights to finish the book because it was so good.

Yeah, I really enjoy Mega Man 3 (and that slide is a nice movement option I felt the series needed) but some of the Doc Bot stages either feel really mean, or really busted.

BTW, in case anyone's wondering why the music stopped, I think Alex died on the same frame the screen transitioned. The screen transition took priority over the death but only after the death stopped the music.

I completely forgot that Alex managed to accidentally trigger a speedrun tactic in this. As much as I enjoy MM3, it was a janky rush job. The game actually runs better when the music is disabled.
