I actually did the cliche "punch the bully in the face and he never bothered me again" thing. I did very much try to avoid him after tho, I was always afraid retribution would come one day.

@danryckert : I used to have to use toothpicks after every meal just like you, then I went to the dentist a couple of weeks ago and filled in those places where food was getting stuck. Now the problem is fixed and I don't get stuff stuck everywhere anymore. So ask your dentist about it. Be warned; it's fucking expensive

As did I - I don't particularly remember the details (I must've been about 7 at the time), but I gave a guy who was giving me trouble a punch in the gut (which must have been unexpected - I was the very stereotypical top-of-the-class/never says a bad word about anyone kid at that time[0]). Never bothered me again, and he actually turned into a decent guy. I wouldn't say we were close, but we were definitely friends a few years later.

[0] FWIW, once you've established that reputation, you can get away with a lot (put rest in spoiler block, because it got excessively long and off-topic)

I remember getting pulled in to set the headmistress with two other guys towards the end of primary school (I think we were throwing sticks/rocks at a tree to try and dislodge a ball); she took one look at me and said "I know you can't have meant to do anything wrong; get back to class" but kept the other two there.

That also continued through comprehensive school (high school) - there was a year of biology classes where the four of us on the back row were openly chatting and passing sweets around, two years of English classes where three of us were openly cheating ~5ft from the teacher, and I had an IT teacher whom I was deliberately awkward with (coming up with bad but technical possible solutions to break his examples) who still covered for a group of us he knew had network access far beyond what a student should have (I think his words are "I know what you're doing, just don't get caught"). I also had a psychics teacher give me unrestricted access to a 5kV power supply, which was real fun to set what you could burn with it.

It probably shouldn't work like that, but not going to deny have the teachers on your side was handy. Even when we got pulled in for breaching the school network (something I was tangentially associated with), the deputy head said "We need to examine your laptop to see if you did this. How about you bring it in again _tomorrow_?"

e: @danryckert - You probably don't want fake teeth, especially if your reason is just no cavities. If you get dentures, you need to take them out to clean them (overnight soak) and have significantly reduced bite strength. If you get implants, you stay get some reduction in bite strength, and have to go through the same cleaning regime to protect your gums (IIRC). The implants themselves are only rated for ~15 years, so them may need to be replaced at some point anyway. There's pretty much no benefit to what you suggest.

Great job Alex! Not a huge fan of constant chatter at the beginning because some of them couldn't be bothered to even halt the conversation to give Alex a chance/or congratulate him on beating a boss. Eventually it calmed to the point where there was a better balance between game and conversation so kudos guys on adjusting.

Maybe this is a "Millennial vs Centennial" thing, but at least where I am pretty much everything is still done through some combination of text and Facebook Messenger. Snapchat is usually filled out through the contact list, and all actual communication is through iMessage/text. Instagram is for sharing funny pictures and snapchat is for selfies or pictures/videos of something you just did/saw. Keep in mind I am closer in age to Dan's sister (21) than to the students she teaches, but even the younger people I go to school with - ranging all the way down to 18 - are like this.

I was a cub scout when I was younger. There's four ranks, you start out as a bobcat, then wolf, then bear, then you're a webelos. I made it all the way through webelos and got my arrow of light. Made it to boy scouts and went to a few meetings and dropped out.

I love whenever Dan talks about marijuana. First it's the "weed smoke blurs the logos on rapper's hats" thing, now it's "marijuana smoke is blue also we have to call the cops." Giant Bomb attracts all the NARCs!

Wasn't there a big change to accepted belief that flossing is not necessary? There's so many big reverses to accepted knowledge and I never know what to believe. Like how wheat bread is no longer considered more healthy than white bread.

I know I needed to floss after my braces came off. My gums were pretty messed up for a while.

That's a relief. I'm so used to be the odd man out when it comes to this movie, and I don't get it. The scenes that brought up the most as being "so awesome" are the ones that I'd think should upset Star Wars fans the most

@puddingbrummsel: I enjoyed it and I thought I really wouldn't considering it's about the rebels, arguably the part of Star Wars I care the least about. Was surprised they managed to make it interesting without having a Jedi as a central plot point.

Of course different strokes for different strokes and all that. I'm sure when you said Rogue One is bad, what you really deep down in your heart meant to say is that "I personally didn't enjoy it" - or at least that's what I've selfishly started to project onto people online opinions to make the internet a better place.

Obviously I didn't enjoy it. But I genuinely think it's not a good movie. I'm not going to tell other people not to enjoy it, cause that's shitty, but the whole thing fell completely flat for me.

And CG Cushing/Fisher are a goddamn atrocity, I won't even have that argument.

I also only made it through about half of 100 Bullets, but that's mainly because I have trouble with finishing long series. For those who haven't read 100 Bullets, you get one guess as to how many issues there are...

Other cool crime series that are mercifully shorter are Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' Criminal, David Lapham's Stray Bullets, and Juan Díaz Canales & Juanjo Guarnido's Blacksad.

Man, Dan is a true grifter and scam artist. I could not bear to shame myself as he has done, I'm much too self-conscious. Man, and his heartless responses towards the employees who suffer for it... I admire Dan, I wish I could be more like him. What a frightening human being.

No, that's the distorted telephone game version. What happened was that dentists and the ADA have been recommending flossing for like thirty years but there were no studies to back it up. That doesn't mean you shouldn't floss just don't be crazy like Dan.

"DARE was on one of my favorite subjects" ...subtly Dan strikes gold again.

hot take: Rogue One was a neat movie, I liked how it was a side story but still out things together in a fun/engaging way. It had problems, but not really more than Episode 7 (though different ones) I don't really remember CGI humans besides Leia which I guess did look odd but it didn't make me...angry. Maybe because it lasted like 11 seconds.

Oh and they were both way better than the prequels, which were not only bad but excessively boring.

Lot of opinions on Rogue One! It was my 2nd least favorite Star Wars movie (only better than attack of the clones imo), but I would never try to take away anyone's enjoyment of it. None of the characters really appealed to me, and the story wasn't one I felt needed to be told. Glad some people dug it though, the friends I saw it with were happy.

Abby is also right about Animal Man, Jeff Lemire is a brilliant writer (and occasionally artist) and the art in that series was great also. Still prefer the Grant Morrison run overall, but Lemire brought the character into the modern DCU better than anyone else could have.

Also, good job Alex :)

@phantomgardener: I did not like Rogue One that much either. It was an ok film but all the characters were so completely dull, and it really suffered for being a prequel with all the shitty fanservice moments with Tarkin and Vader. That in addition to being a prequel which almost always means you know how everything is gonna end.

I didn't get bullied much. A bit here and there, but it was mostly a few girls that hurt my feelings calling me ugly or fat or whatever. By the time we were in high school we mostly were all nice to each other. Also didn't really have a lot of groups. Either you partied and played sports (or in my case was in a rock band), getting into a group with each other, or you didn't and we're in a smaller group with others like you. Even then, we left those people alone other than some light teasing, even if we thought they were weird.

It's also important to note that it was a pretty small school in the deep south.

@danryckert If your gums are bleeding, you really should go and see your dentist. There could be an underlying problem that no amount of brushing or flossing will fix. It sounds like you'd probably need a deep cleaning. I had deep cleaning performed on my teeth last year and it worked wonders. I'd also recommend using an anti-bacterial mouthwash containing chlorhexidine gluconate (maybe just ask your dentist about this). Lastly, if you feel the need to floss multiple times per day, you're probably doing it wrong in the first place. Plaque takes 24 hours to form on the teeth so flossing multiple times throughout the day is actually pointless. Flossing too much can actually cause them to become irritated, swollen, wear down enamel and even lead to destroying your gum line which it sounds like you've done based on your description of seeing the root.
