For those interested in learning more about World Joyland, here's a link to all the photos my girlfriend took of the place while we were wandering around there. http://imgur.com/a/hYQIf

Also, here's a video of that stage show that was performed to like eight people.

the world in the last picture, doesn't look quite right. Also looks like the most popular theme park in china, did you guys go when it was closed or something?

"Shanghai doesn't have many western expats" - Alex must've not ventured over to the Puxi side of the city and Xin Tian Di, enormous population of Caucasians there, many working in the various tech companies in the city (Ubisoft, 2K, Blizzard, CCP to name a few gaming companies).

@tunesmith: I realize there are actually quite a lot of Western people living in the city, but I hardly saw any of them as I walked around. I might have just not ventured into that neighborhood, as you said.

Interesting what Alex has to say about Shanghai. I worked on a doco a few years ago about the demolition of the Hutong in Beijing before the 2008 Olympics, definitely some people in China that care about preservation, but their appeals came just a little too late.

Regarding the built up, uninhabited areas of China that Alex mentioned, I think these things are fascinating (and crazy).

Basically China is doing all this insane construction to artificially inflate their GDP. Right now they're still surviving by deferring debt, but eventually they're going to crash and crash hard - and we (meaning US and Europe) will all suffer as a result of how many companies were bailed out by Chinese investment during the 2008-2011 economic downturn.

Here's a good segment on this:

I really dislike the camera swapping. I assume it's an automatic thing from Google.

I just rather see all the people involved in the conversation with a some highlight of the person speaking.

World Joyland is a famous for being built for less than 50 million bucks in an era when Disney spend 200 million, alone, on the new "Pixar: Radiator Springs Racers" ride.

Its also famous for always being empty and having cheap knock offs of Disney toys in the gift shops.

The typical China building project, it attempts to copy the west at a fraction of the price, and even hired American companies to design the park. Unfortunately, unlike the west, the most Chinese people cant afford to go to Theme Parks so attendance is continually sparse.

You would be happy to know, Alex, all the major rides and rollercoasters were purchased from international companies and have the standard safety features.

The Awesome Games Done Quick speed run is still going for at least another day or two!

There was a pretty wild Goldeneye two-person run with one guy controlling movement and another guy controlling the aim; set a world record time. It'd be worth it to watch it on the Twitch archive, if not for the gameplay, for the runners' intensity (Oh baby!).

Those escape room things sound like guaranteed way to get me to have a panic attack. I would lose it within 30 minutes in that scenario I think, even if I knew I could leave by quitting at any time. o__o

I loved this episode, guys. Alex, Patrick, and Drew; you guys should do a trip sometime. I think that would be great. For the site, sort of like the Iceland thing. That video was so good. :)

Ya, that quote made me kind of upset. Both Beijing and Shanghai have a ton of (western) expats. Granted, during his limited stay there, I'm sure he didn't have the chance to see too many.

Oh guys there was so many more awesome moments from AGDQ. The guy who played Super Punch-Out! blindfolded right after Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! and he BEAT THE WHOLE THING!

Also, Banjo Kazooie composer Grant Kirkhope was on when they ran that game, and Dave "Zoid" Kirsh was on during Metroid Prime. Here's all the archived links to all the runs.

So yeah awesome episode guys, those China stories were bonkers. So I'm wondering, if you guys don't mind me asking, why weren't you at Ryan's funeral?
