Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops & the Wolf!

Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops and the Wolf: 11/07/2014

There might be too many cooks in this show, but we do our best to talk about Advanced Warfare, Ubisoft's (now reversed) decision to remove games from Steam, and more.

Grab a cup of coffee, and catch up on the day's headlines with Giant Bomb guys that aren't in San Francisco.

I couldn't finish watching that Too Many Cooks video. I just skimmed through it after they got to the cops. I didn't find it funny at all but maybe it's because I didn't watch the whole thing?

@outrager: I mean, you skimmed through it so maybe it's just not your thing, but how the thing just keeps going and going and how insane it gets is what makes it. I loved it.

I watched the whole thing and basically agree with you...I can understand the appeal but I didn't find it funny, just odd.

Or was the Ubisoft part removed since the steam removal got reversed?

I'm always curious why people write off multiplayer so quickly. Like I can understand not liking multiplayer I suppose but I'm always of the mindset don't knock it till you try it. Just kinda caught me as soon as Patrick was like "I have no interest in the multiplayer". Is it just people don't like competition, or just don't want to see what is going on with it? I don't ever think liking the gameplay of something but not being as good as other people is a reason to not give things a try either. I mean, if you inherently dislike the mechanics of the game itself then it would make sense to not want to try the multiplayer. For instance I just don't like RTS games anymore. Part of it is that management of multiple things is not a personal skill I have. I focus on one thing fairly intently. So the multiplayer is just not for me because I just don't like the style of game anyway. Maybe the issue is just that they don't like FPS games much anyway, which I can understand.

If you are ever going to try a game where people are going to surpass you in skill quickly, try it when the game comes out. Every time a CoD game comes out there are tons of people that are terrible and those people either get back into the groove and get better or they've had their time and it stops. That is one of the things I appreciate about Jeff or Brad giving games a whirl is they will check out the multiplayer.

Although I guess I never want to delve into sports game multiplayer but I always meant to at least give it a try. I just never really take the time to. However part of my exasperation about this is that some of the sports I just don't know much about outside of the game. Fifa I can hold my own decently, but games like Madden I don't know some of the nuances of football well enough to even be confident playing the game single player.

Too Many Cooks...hmmm. Starts off as a pretty funny lampoon of '80s sitcoms and the weird last names that some cast-members had back then (Ashley-Olsen?? Collier? Really??). Then the machete dude pops up and it gets a bit funnier, but mostly weird. Only to run out of ideas and become a giant troll middle-finger by the end of it. 2/5 stars for me, only because the first four or five minutes are legit funny stuff (though very hipster-alt).

The Ubisoft anti-pirating effort effecting consumers in a bad way is on consoles too. Recently I had to reformat my PS3 hard drive to fix a problem with it, and I had backed up my Rayman Legends save file on a USB stick. When I went to play that game after reformatting, the game told me that I wasn't the owner of the save file and it wouldn't let me use it. I'm guessing it did that because I didn't have any trophies for that game after I reformatted, but to tell me that I wasn't the owner of a save file of a game I bought and purposely not let me use it because why? Because you fear I copied somebody else's save file just to get some trophies? Fuck off Ubisoft.

@tournamentofhate: i have had similar issues with Ubisoft when used have crap wifi every minute or so i would get pop up while playing far cry 3 pc telling me i needed to reconnect and it would not let play game for 2 or 3 minutes and this happened every 10 to 5 mins so in end had to download crack just play dam game.

Ubisoft are worst when it comes to annoying drm that's completely useless at stopping pirates but great at messing with people who buy there games. why do they bother

Getting into online multiplayer requires more than being adept at or interested in the gameplay itself, though. You need to be willing to enter a certain competitive mindset, which some people find more taxing to maintain over extended lengths of time and less consistently rewarding than what they can get out of a decent single-player campaign. They're the counterpart to players who get little to no enjoyment from cutscenes, NPC dialog, and scripted gameplay sequences.

@spraynardtatum:

Again, I do not think the actual article is all that negative or different from what he said on Bombin': http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/press-x-to-experience-feelings/1100-5075/

Actual quote from the article:

It's an incredibly clumsy handling of an early emotional beat.

Or is it?

OK, it is. But I don't know if it deserves the dogpiling that's surrounded it. Call of Duty is an easy target, so everyone wants to get a punch in. Call of Duty has never tugged at our heartstrings, and Advanced Warfare isn't setting the series bar much higher. But a Call of Duty game giving players an opportunity to pay their respects to a fallen comrade, even if it's placed within this pseudo-futuristic interpretation of America, is interesting. It suggests the storytelling happening in smaller games might be rubbing off.

I don't see what all those other articles have to do with this either.

@hassun: Here's the final quote from the article:

Advanced Warfare employs the most blunt tool possible to achieve its goal, but in doing so, undermined its emotional arc by being tone-deaf. It probably won't be the last game to fumble a contextual action, but maybe it'll prompt games to device better ways to incentivize players to participate.

I was demonstrating with all of those articles that the press are the ones dogpiling. Which I'd argue Patrick was a part of. He tried straddling the line but I don't think that excuses the fact that he participated in what he's criticizing.

@spraynardtatum: If nothing else, all those articles are showing a trend of group think in the gaming press.

Or maybe it's the cable news problem of not having enough news and needing to produce content, and this was an easy target for a headline. Honestly, my eyes just sort of pass over these kind of articles, so I didn't even notice how prevalent this particular instance was until it was brought up.

Yeah, this Call of Duty thing reminds me of the "Gamers are over" articles from a month or so ago. 10 or more different articles demonstrating nearly identical opinions. I can understand 10 different articles being written about concrete information like release dates or a new trailer because that's essentially news, but when they're all opinion pieces that share the same opinion it makes me question the reason for why they were written.

You're right, it's this weird group think that I think more games writers should be distancing themselves from.

I feel the Too Many Cooks video is something you have to have knowledge of television/film spanning three plus decades to fully appreciate it. The video rapidly throws out reference after reference of television past. I notice a lot of comments say it references 90s sitcoms, while it's clear the references from the 70s and 80s flew right over their head. If you're missing that then I completely understand how someone could come away with an impression like "this is weird/stupid".

I mean how many people these days remember shows like Falcon Crest, let alone younger generations.
