Playdate: Console Launchapalooza: The PlayStation 5

This was a fun day of all the streaming. Godfall looks BORING.

I remember when i bought Demon's Souls played a few minutes of it and then never touched it again lol. I think I've finally figured out souls games aren't for me.

Going to try to grab a PS5 at launch despite my better judgement but I'm prety much destined to end up with both of them at some point.

Here's hoping most people who want to buy a PS5 or Series X will be able to get one during this launch window, which is supposed to be during... I guess Black Friday Month now in November.

Some damn good games here. Demon's Souls and Miles Morales will arrive tomorrow. Hopefully I can find a system somewhere.

And boy, Ben seems to have it out for Godfall, like it attacked him personally. The gameplay isn't amazing but I kinda like its look.

I'm not too concerned about the lack of compelling launch titles, although Sony has more to beat its chest about.

When I bought a PS4 back in '14, one of the few tentpole game Sony could showcase was "The Order: 1886" /shudder. The console didn't really come into its own until 2015 when Bloodborne was released.

I'm glad Vinny and Brad had some mildly positive things to say about Godfall. That game is 100% not worth $70, but it seems like a great title for just messing around with friends while enjoying the over-the-top visuals. I look forward to when it inevitably comes to PS+ next year.

I played through Demon's Souls like, earlier this year through that PS3 emulator and was pretty let down coming to it after playing all of the other souls games. There are a lot of areas that feel very unfinished and empty and I found it SUPER easy. I stomped my through it in like 3 sittings and the only boss that really gave me any trouble at all was the last one.

I'd love to be able to have a time machine and travel to the moment where From Soft just finished Demon's Souls and show them this - "hey look how this game will be able to look like and run one day" and see their minds get blown.

@itsalita The idea is not to be impressed by a game that came out 11 years ago but rather - I guess - to appreciate how it is the bedrock for every Souls game that came after it. The poison levels, the dragon on the bridge, the NPC's kicking you down a hole.. these are all tropes that were established in Demon's.

When people like myself, who played this game at time of release, say it's the "best one" it's of course not meant technically.

Man, something about giving sackboy video game grunts is really throwing me off.

I just rewatched the Breaking Brad Demon's Souls run so it was really nice to see Brad play Demon's Souls while Vinny told him to do questionable things again.

Sackboy looks a lot better than I was expecting.

Chiming in to say, I'm surprised, but I actually agree that Demon's Souls looks kind of "ehhh". It's very technically pretty, but it has a strange doughyness to all the character designs. It feels a little bit like it's missing some of the weird grimy aesthetic that was so appealing about the original.

Man it was strange deja vu watching Brad play the remake. Like the part where he finds the Bastard Sword exactly like in the original, and checks whether he can use it (and can't because he starts with Royal, as was the case back then).

@mvhvtmv: Some of the monster redesigns - like the skeletons in 4-1, errr kind of questionable.

The game feels off visually because it seems to have a distinctly Western look now. This might be a huge insult but it seems a lot more Lords of the Fallen than Demon's Souls.

I know there's a wider issue behind it, but I really wish Brad's audio problem could be fixed for these streams. The launchtacular videos are always worth coming back to even years down the line, so it's a shame that the audio so uneven. That that being said, I really appreciate the effort from all the crew during these trying times.

The fact that you can not back up PS5 games to an external HDD or SSD is some BS. But that stuff can be patched so its not deal breaking for me. I would of liked to see Avengers running cause the load times and frame rate are garbage on the old consoles.

The rules DO make a game fun, because they put everyone on the same page and focus competition/cooperation onto specific skills. Winning ain't the only thing; heck, it may not even be the point.

This whole console release season is so messy and overly confused on the part of Sony and Microsoft in equal measure. Like when a bad manager makes a sweeping decision but doesn't inform everyone at once and some people are still doing things the old way. The PS5's rumble, UI, both consoles' lack of clarity on why/when/how some games are/aren't resuming correctly, some games patching in frame caps and removing better versions, 20 different kinds of media embargos. It's pretty clear a lot of this was rushed out to make the holiday season amid the pandemic's constantly-shifting restrictions.

isnt crazy that people cant tell the difrence if the ray tracing is on or off? Raytracing is so overated, another opportunity to rip our wallets.

work on lighting needs to be started for visual improvements in games. at the moment it's slight but as time goes on the effects will be more profound.

Yeah, most of the benefits that make ray-tracing thought of as a 'holy grail' of graphics rendering really aren't present here, and probably won't be present as long as ray-tracing performance is poor enough that it can only be used in a piecemeal way. Right now it's merely being used as an effect to replace other effects, as opposed to being a physically-based complete replacement of the rasterization pipeline.

I can foresee that in another decade or so the industry is going to struggle to convince people that ray-tracing is more than just an expensive method for doing mirror reflections and ambient occlusion shadows. Or maybe before then we'll have something like Otoy's Brigade finally making a big splash, who knows.

I kinda hope they move away from the insane graphics focus and get working on destruction and physics. For me, that adds so much more to gameplay than shiny stuff and realistic surfaces. Graphics are cool and all, but I feel like always throwing all the next gen power on more and more shiny puddles is a waste. So much stuff one can do with that extra juice...

I think any sort of dramatic increase in overall complexity and interactivity of the world necessitates a much much larger improvement in CPU and RAM than what these new consoles are providing. The benefits from having a CPU and GPU that's a few multiples faster along with a very marginal increase in memory is only good enough to take you from 30fps -> 60/120fps, and 1080p -> 4k in similar types of games; it's not likely to facilitate revolutionary leaps in scale or scope of gameplay.

Godfall IS bad. I was expecting a casual matchmaking-based coop melee looter game...it doesn't have matchmaking. It is rendered a solo game unless you invite a friend over Epic's social hub...stuff I never knew existed until launching Godfall and discovering there is no matchmaking.

even then, I've seen at least 5 threads from people who have completed the game in about 10 hours and...that's not good man.

Otherwise, I'm good, I think I will buy a PS5 but only when the exclusive software lineup collectively cost more than the system. If not that, at least I'll be holding off until we get further from the cross-gen territory of time, and let the Dark Souls quality/quantity of now 'current' gen games to fill out.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE: I have had the Pathless on my radar since it was first shown and man I am happy about it. That is my game to be jazzed about today, it's fun, I dig.

Surely games like KSP/Battlefield Bad Company 2 contradict such a point?

There's more than enough processing power in these boxes to make games that facilitate interesting interactions should they opt to lower the excessive levels of detail. The problem resides in the fact that pretty is generally more marketable.

Godfall looks like it could have been some dumb fun but that is the ugliest fucking artstyle. Unreal. No restraint or tact to be found in a single design.

Giant Bomb guys mostly seem to forget everything about old games they play in specifics lol. I think they just move on mentally like that from game to game.

@ripelivejam: Id honestly give the others a try. Demon souls is the less refined and in some ways hard one. Try dark souls 3 or sekiro. I also had a tuff time and the overhype can make you fold your hands and scoff at the game but it is actually worth it. Beating those games is super satisfying and its not as hard as you think. Its just a paradigm shift where you dont just button mash but view ques from opponents etc. At least give each a try till you get half way. The game's intros are always purposely deceiving and most GB content, no offense, will make all souls games look bad cause their not really that into them (back in the day) to begin with or only showcase boring parts. XD. That said half of staff has gotten into them and started showing the goods so their is that.

@toughshed: Yeah I guess I just get more into games than some do. I probably play more than 200 games a year but I've put so much time into the Souls series it's hard to forget the basics.

I find it weird that when you hit the icon for a game in your game library it first takes you to the hub for that game and you have to press the play button to actually launch it.

Why not just have it launch from the start?
