Quick Look: Crystal Crisis

I wish this game would pop up some franchise logos on the character select screen. This isn't Nintendo's stable we're talking about here; I don't know who's from where. Also, what's with the steady sexualization of Kawase. I just watched a trailer for a new game in that series yesterday which gave a glamour shot to her exposed midriff.

Aban is from 1001 Spikes, not La Mulana.

Yeah, Aban hawkins is from Aban Hawkins and the 1001/1002 Spikes. The equivalent Inidana Jones wannabe from La Mulana is named Lemeza.

With the way these characters look I'm expecting Assault Android Cactus to show up.

I think that started with the Vita version. Since the Vita was the anime porn machine.

Aside from her in-game sprites, Kawase has always been a bit sexualized. There was an old Game Center CX episode where they got the artist to send some drawings to Arino and he even remarked on how busty the character is compared to the appearance in-game. At least she's an adult, unlike the case for a lot of those types of characters.

Also, Solange was originally from Code of Princess, which Blade Strangers was essentially a sequel to.

Seeing Astro Boy just make me angry that no one has ported/remastered that awesome GBA Astro Boy game.

Yeah, I love Astro Boy: Omega Factor, it's such a cool game. I wish Treasure would put out a new game sometime soon (are they still actively developing games?).

The moment-to-moment gameplay is really fun, and the overall structure of the game (e.g., the way you meet new characters to get upgrades and unfurl new events) was much deeper than I expected at the time out of a GBA game. Some of the NPCs were really well hidden, I remember having to look at guides to find everybody (which I think you had to do to get the true ending).

The game looks rad, but man those sure are some load times for a puzzle game, huh?

@madmatt213 No need to remaster that Astro Boy GBA game, it holds up with it's 16-bit sprite art style amazingly well. I do think a digital re-release/emulation for Switch would be nice though.

Anyways, glad to see a Puzzle Fighter X Tetris Battle Gaiden mashup on the Switch. Seems like a perfect match. Wish the load times were a bit snappier though...

Solange is from Code of Princess. 3DS/Switch game similar to Guardian Heroes. Some of the same devs from that game as well.

@chrisflavin: It's an american thing. I believe in the rest of the world Smarties are the M&M style chocolate candies and the things Brad mentioned are called Rockets.

I believe the characters without a "series" are from unreleased, also unannounced, games. At least that was the initial pitch back when this and Blade Strangers were announced.

I've no idea if Helen or bootleg Belmont are still getting games though.

How can you have a game pulling in characters from a variety of other properties and not have Shovel Knight? By this point, he's become the video game equivalent of the village bicycle.

I love the commitment to early JP indie characters. Who heck knows or cares about Akuji the Demon. That's awesome.

Wow, this game is NOT friendly for the colorblind. By the time I see the difference between the green and yellow, it already dropped to the bottom of the well.

The blocks need icons in them, like a ton of color-based puzzlers have.

Going by that opening, they 100% got Peter Cullen not because of Optimus Prime, but because of the old Toonami promos.

Ugh those load times. It was 30 seconds to get back to the story mode screen and another 30 seconds to load the next round. I was excited for this game but not in this state.
