Nice, I'll listen to every one of these with Jeff on.

Not even 10 minutes in, he's already giving proper advice about not being defined by your job.

Education is always a tricky thing to give advice about because it's different for everyone. I 100% don't regret dropping out of college when I did, I mulled over the decision for months and made sure it was the best thing for me emotionally. Just don't make any rash decisions, is usually the best advice in that regard I think.

OH MAN.

I do the crazy telephone pole thing too. I also do it with gaps between the white lane dividers on the way. I always tap my feet or squeeze my toes alternately. Occasionally I'll squeeze my hands on the steering wheel alternately.

I've been doing this since I was really young and could see out the car windows easily enough. Probably 20 or 25 years now.

It's my only weird habit, but it isn't OCD in my case. My fiancée has some gnarly pure-O OCD though.

I have the same issue as Jeff. When my dad died a few years ago I notice a lot of other people that look like him. It's even difficult to watch Apple conferences because Tim Cook looks so much like my dad. It's rough, man.

I think Jeff gave the best advice on the late adulthood thing when he said to basically forget about societal norms. People put to much emphasis on that kind of shit. It might just not be your time to have a relationship or venture out on your own just yet. Don't beat yourself up about it and if anyone looks down on you for it they probably aren't worth your time and don't actually care about you.

I always knew I was maybe a little OCD but I find it amazing that I seemingly have the EXACT same habits as Jeff. I always look at my garage door after it's closed and say "closed" out loud or else when I drive away I wonder if I closed it or not. Once or twice I turned around but most of the time I can resist because my roommate leaves after me and I tell myself that he will just close it if I left it open.

I also "have" to wipe my hands after handling food, cooked or not. I hate having the food residue, even the hint of the texture, on my hands. But... I don't know. I can stop if I want. If it's ribs or something I usually give up after my 3rd napkin and say "fuck it... time to get saucy!"

I also get the urge to run my tongue over the front of my teeth, followed by the tops, followed by the backs, one at a time. Usually at movies. Like to start over if I mess it up. I just like doing it before the movie starts. Don't know how to explain it.

But I wonder if I have other OCD habits that affect my life more negatively, or even more directly, and I've just never made the connection...

EDIT: Oh god I was busting up laughing so hard in the middle of my office when Jeff said press play on Return of the Mack

i get where you guys are coming from about college degrees, but i don't think it applies with science degrees, to work in any science related field your really gonna need an advanced, sometimes masters level education in that field to get work at all.

I really like this podcast but I think the Dans need to cut back on talking about themselves.

Getting more questions in would be better.

Just take it for granted that the status quo will magically be maintained, as if it doesn't require the constant hard work of thousands of government employees to barely keep everything running as it is. Every natural resource will last forever, and everything will be fine.

See, it's easy.

California will probably figure something out, even if it means raising their state taxes through the roof. Still, it always bums me out when people assume some sort of oil/fresh water/whatever shortage is just a temporary thing that will "blow over". It's in the government's best interest to find whatever solution they can so that people don't freak out and riot, so they usually figure something out to avoid chaos, but eventually some important things are going to start running out or become exorbitantly expensive.

I figure most people in a more technical or structured line of work (science and medicine, engineering, most technology-based fields, legal work) will be able to tell that Dan's perspective of "nothing I did in university has ever come up in my job" and Jeff's employer perspective of "I put little stock in their degree, it's a personality-based job" are probably not super relevant to those professions.

Dan and Jeff's advice is probably much more relevant for anyone getting a BA, because they're right, it's pretty much "I did a thing" to most employers, and the actual content of that thing probably isn't specifically important.

yes!!! looking forward to jeff's timeworn advice. edit: the stuff about losing his father is really relatable and i'm glad he talked about it. my 'fractured period' went on a lot more than months. i lost my dad ~10 years ago, preceded by years of tough times for me and my mom. there's still fallout from various things. i kinda wish i saw my dad in others. feels like i haven't actually confronted everything...

also, screw societal norms, especially in situations like this.

I totally understand what Jeff went/is going through with his father and I can relate to some degree. Men who look like my own father don't really affect me, but the smell of a burning fireplace used to get me real bad. It's been four years since he passed, and about three years since I've been messed up as much as Jeff mentioned, but it's still like a thing looming over you all the time--some days more than others.

So far a fantastic episode!

I don't understand why you would assume he's looking forward and making predictions rather than looking back at past episodes.

College degrees or more specifically the idea of basically buying your ability to get better paying jobs is the most ass-backwards thing...
