Not a huge fan of the Dark Souls turn; but I did get a good laugh at how she uses her powers to pickup the swords, Darksiders protags are always super lazy.

This looks like a fine game to mindlessly play on a Sunday afternoon, but for like $20-$30.

@csl316: We all have our vices. I was pumped to play Lords of Shadow 2 and I did play and beat the whole thing. Wasn't the greatest thing in the world but I did like the first game an awful lot so I guess I kinda can see why people despite everything are still invested in wanting to play this.

They should have just made the 4-play co-op game that everyone got hyped for at the end of the first game.

That'll be the price I'm willing to pay for this.

Does that come up in this QL or is this something he talked about on last week's Beastcast? (I still have to listen to that one)

As someone who has played Both Darksiders, plus all Souls-Like games (The Surge, Lords of the Fallen, Nioh, etc.) This game looks right up my alley.

I played through Darksiders 2 Deathinitive edition just a couple months ago, that game is still great and has a fantastic combat system. DS1, still also great. It's a damn shame this seems so mediocre in comparison, but I guess isn't surprising, considering how they are just kinda shoving this thing out the door.

You can find DS1&2 remastered editions on sale for like 5-10 bucks on the regular. This being full price in regards to that is kinda sketchy. From what I've seen, both those games are far superior to this.

It's especially disappointing from a protagonist standpoint, coming off of Darksiders 2. Michael Wincott as Death is such a great character, Fury just seems so bland in comparison.

Really enjoyed the first Darksiders (until you got the portal gun, and it kinda ruined the whole vibe for me). I did miss the second one; but I'm almost certainly passing on this one. It's gone from a "mature" Zelda game to a "mature" Zelda type game, with Dante's Inferno premise and an in-vogue Dark Souls twist thrown in.

Looks like it's trying too hard to do too many things. Shame.

All of the horseman are actually introduced fully in Darksiders 1 from what I remember. They aren't the biblical ones though. In the Darksiders universe you have War, Death, Fury (not Pestilence) and Strife (not Famine). Each game was/is supposed to star one of the Horseman and tell a different part of a four-act story.

Bit worried about some of the other properties they have planned to "bring back" cause some of them i'm very very fond of.

And if this is the "work" they've put into one of the major properties they had acquired, i have very little interesting in seeing what else they're going to "bring back".

Have been playing for a good 5 hours now, really enjoying it myself.

It's definitely mixing in the the first game with a few elements of the Souls games, but it's still very much a Darksiders game first. Pretty much just like Darksiders 2 tried to mix in a little Diablo into it.

The platforming feels a little bit clunky. The combat definitely has a touch more animation priority then the first two games, to where you cannot just mindlessly spam attacks and expect a dodge to just save you mid combo all the time. So in that regard the combat does ask you to pay a little more attention then the earlier games, at least on the second highest difficulty that I'm playing it at. I'm not sure where I fall yet on my feelings on the combat overall a little mixed, it's certainly more demanding then 1 or 2 in that regard.

No real performance issues running it maxed at 1440p, (on a 1080) keeping an easy 60 at all times, with the only dips being cutscenes for some weird reason and a very occasional load of a new zone gives a momentary dip.

Haven't had any of those happen a single time so far. Anecdotal, but there you go, playing the PC release version.

This game is actually pretty fun, and I love the aesthetics of the Darksiders world. The biggest shame about all these people saying they're gonna wait until it's like $20 before they're gonna buy it is that poor sales will probably stop DS4 from coming out.

Yeah, while I wasn't the biggest fan of the first one it filled a niche that Nintendo just wasn't doing with the Zelda games anymore/at the time (nor did anybody else). This one just seems to want to do the same thing a dozen other games have been doing for the last five years, and maybe not even doing it particularly well.

It had large open levels (a-la a late gen Zelda game) but was pretty linear. It was go to Zone A then B then C. You could go back to previous levels to get chests and other stuff with newer abilities, but it wasn't really "pick a direction" open world really, no. All that said, the idea of a Souls-like game that moves faster and is a little more forgiving sounds like fun to me, but I'm not a darksiders game is the place for that.

This game seems like something I'd accidentally get in a humble bundle in approximately 18 months. It doesn't look bad by any means, but it does seem like it's a little more stock than the first two Darksiders games.

This game is awesome. Stop looking at reviews. Play it for yourself. Its a lot different than darksiders games have been and that is because all darksiders games are different. It isnt "regressive" its its own thing. I am having an absolute blast with it.

I actually really dig the visual look of this, and the idea of Darksiders taking more inspiration from Souls is an exciting prospect, but a lot of these environments seem kind of bland, and the lava dungeon looked like slapped together Diablo III dungeons or something.
It'd be interesting to see if they have a greater variety of enemies and environments outside of what we've seen but the way this has been talked about I am not optimistic.

Also her design and dialogue is.... bad.

The game is a mess...and that’s sadly how it has felt it would be. I feel like there hasn’t been any marketing for this compared to what came with 1 and 2 either.

I guess the true theme of the Darksiders games is to pay homage (or rip off) other, better games.

I think I'd rather replay Lords of the Fallen than this game.

"It's an estus flask, like Dark Souls"

"...a healing item."

I am glad Jeff called out Jason here. I'm so tired of everything being viewed through the perspective of Dark Souls (and other games for that matter). The functionality might be similar - I get it. But its annoying. Not everyone knows what the fuck an 'estus flask' is.

With the game changing to Souls-like and doing away completely with the horsemen protags... I really wonder if this was originally a game completely unrelated to Darksiders that got mashed into the series in order to trade off of the established franchise name? (I'm probably wrong)

@big_denim: As far as I know, Dark Souls invented the concept of a limited use healing item that recharges at checkpoints or death. That is what an Estus flask is. A healing item can be anything. I think it's perfectly appropriate to use the terminology of the game that invented it. Like it or not, Dark Souls is hugely influential, and not without reason.

@so1337: Neither do I. This looks exactly like the very competent B-game iteration of more popular franchises that Darksiders has always been. The graphics are solid. The gameplay looks simplistic, but solid. I don't know, I haven't played it. It looks fun to me, though. Maybe people's expectations are too high. People praise Darksiders 1 for being a Zelda-like, but when it came out, it received a lot of lukewarm reviews that called it a lesser Zelda-clone. Reviews and public perception are weird. I'm definitely going to pick it up when it's $30.
