@benpack:

Damage does accelerate. It's not just 1hp per unit left. It's 1hp for every star level of units left. So if a lvl3 and lvl2 enemy units are left on your board, you lose 5hp.

On top of that, wins/losses typically see the losers leaving more units on the board, so it's normal to be taking 10-15hp per loss later on.

Dropping items does not increase chance to get items, it's just the way some players prefer to keep items from combining and when you're getting more items you don't want to commit to heroes. New players see other players do that and just make assumptions that it's for drop rate.

There's absolutely no necessity of DOTA knowledge to learn this game quickly, as evidenced by all the non-dota player streamers that have gotten really good at it very quickly.

Unfortunately, you can't create a custom lobby for just yourself and a friend. Creating a custom lobby just creates a lobby for others to join your party for a real game of AutoChess.
Looks like you can play in a private lobby by setting a password and your team just goes up against a (seemingly) random lineup. There isn't a bot developing a team alongside yours.

Wow the first bit of this video is infuriating when you really want to know what this mod is. Especially when they go out to the arcade. Skip to 8:56 to see the gameplay.

That QR code leads to an Ebay shop that sells codes to activate in the game to get more candy. Which means that there's micro transactions in this free to play game within a free to play game, but the transactions occur outside of the game and away from the Steam marketplace.

Tired of seeing every DOTA streamer playing this instead of the main game. I've been in a hotel since December so I haven't played this, so I can't speak to how fun it is, but it's really boring to watch.

I have never played DOTA, and was intrigued by this so I started playing it last night.

I played for seven hours.

It is really fucking hard.

I think I love it.

I also hate it.

I came 3rd in one match and it was an incredible moment.

Im going to play it all day today.

I've found DOTA to be impenetrable and boring, and I sat down and played this for hours after watching the QL. I felt like I learned a hell of a lot, but there's still a long way to go to get good.

I'm...going to keep playing this and see where it goes.

It´s unfortunately often like that... instead of showing the game, they jump around in endless menus and explaining mechanics without the viewer even having an idea what the game is about

You should be able to do that I've only played 1 or 2 games of this and it was that way. It was a lobby of just me and instead of other players it was "pulling enemy teams from the cloud" I think is how the game worded it. Don't know if those were teams currently playing in other matches or just randomized teams or what they were.

@sartagis: If you're talking about selecting "create custom lobby," it's still a real match of auto-chess with real players affecting the ranks. Otherwise, please do explain how you actually created a private lobby of auto-chess...

Y'know, Ben tends to criticize other games for being too complicated or having weird terminology or bad UIs...

And then he plays shit like this and acts like it's no big deal.

@wollywoo: it's a strategy game where he buys units with his earned gold. All these units have their own stats, perform their own iconic ability randomly & belong to different classes that each give certain bonuses. These units can be made stronger by putting items on them or by combining 3x of the same to level them up. Gold can be used to buy new units, reroll a new selection of units to buy, level yourself up (lets you place more units on the board & gives you a higher chance to get better units selections) or you can retain your gold to get interest on the saved amount.

Now you have 8 players trying to construct the best teamcomposition, manage their funds intelligently and battle eachother's team selections. Perhaps you hoard money early on instead of trying to win rounds so you have more gold later on. Maybe you focus on leveling yourself so you can put more units on the board than any other player. Or you try to have a strong team early on so you earn more money from your winspree etc.

Whenever a team kills off all the enemy units on the board, the surviving units deal damage to the player. The stronger the unit, the more damage he will deal to the player. All units will respawn after each round. Last player that stays alive wins.

I realize part of the strategy is working around the random pieces you're offered, but I still feel like it kind of sucks that he lost like 3 rounds in a row almost entirely because he wasn't getting the one specific piece he needed (that last Timbersaw). Like, he still probably wouldn't have come in first place, but I have to imagine he'd have done a lot better if he'd had a level 3 Timbersaw in round 20 as opposed to in round 23 (and also if he still had all that money he used on rerolls).

But I guess everyone is equally susceptible to getting screwed over by RNG, so maybe it all balances out in the end.

Eh, I'm with you, but this is a mod, so it's going to lack polish. I bet Valve is going to throw tons of money at these guys and make this official at some point and we'll see it get the right kind of spit shine.

The more I think about it, the more it's clear that the scenario is really one of the most important parts of a game, and an aspect of game design that has progressively just languished under the presupposition that "content" comes before all else. This game and RE4 have some of the best pacing I've ever experienced in a video game, and while some of that is attributable to power and enemy progression, the scenario makes up most of the feel of that. Arkham City is another game that has a extremely well-paced core scenario, with each new section bringing something new, and each section more or less transitioning into the next.

This game is maybe my new gold standard for pacing in a videogame. And imagine that, it's not a bloated 40-60 hour experience, or even something like what I felt was God of War 2018's bloated 30 hours.

You play RE4 for like 8-10 hours the first time through on one character, and really, there's not that much to it. Not many weapons, not that many types of enemies, but it doesn't matter. The core loop is so engaging and the clip at which you move from area to area is just perfect. They give you just enough time to learn the intricacies of the map, so you sort of create an organic player progression outside of the game - your knowledge makes you better. That's the best kind of game to me.

@onemanarmyy: Well, I understood most of that basic idea. What I meant is that I have no idea what the individual units are doing. It's like if you tried to show someone how to play Hearthstone or Magic by having them watch bots play it randomly at 10x speed with no explanation of their abilities. Thanks for the explanation, though.

@wollywoo:

Ah i see. Yeah it's true that you still need to have played the game enough to learn what the hell all these abilities are doing and what all these class-based effects are and how you can best use them. Same goes for all the items if you never have encountered them in Dota 2 before. Sadly that's hard to get around. Just like Dota2, it's very much a game where you have to experience some losses and flail your way through the game a few times to have the experience necessary to realize how you are actually supposed to play it competently.

@bbalpert

Totally. , being able to play around RNG is something that all the players have to deal with. You can always decide to ditch the timbersaw plan and go for other heroes that you have stored in your stash. Or decide to put more money into leveling your character so you have a better chance at getting these more rare heroes to show up more frequently. It's not unlike poker in that way. You won't always get what you want, but if you play the game well, on average you will be successful.

If your strategy revolves around getting a level 3 timbersaw, you have to make sure that the rest of your team is strong enough to deal with the enemy while you stock up on gold to re-roll the selection multiple times & level yourself to get better odds to find all these timbersaws. Ben pretty much forgot to equip his units with items for the first 15 minutes, which made him way weaker early on than he was supposed to be and limited the gold & levels he should've gathered in that period.

Writing this down, i keep thinking back on Magic the Gathering. Including cards to search through your deck & pick certain cards from it, can be used to stabilize a deck that requires a small handful of cards to make the strategy work out. Auto Chess has similar ways to make sure that you always have a reasonable shot at doing well. Even if you have a tough start, it's totally fine to coast on that losing spree because it actually gives you extra money as a comeback mechanic.
