Love this game. My pawn was a beast, bailed me out plenty of times. Capcom needs to bring online over here. PS I'm surprised yall didn't get Matt Rorie for this quick look.

Man, I'd love to see Brad play more of this. One of the best RPG's ever, certainly of the last couple generations.

I love all the attention this game is getting lately,
and the game really deserves it. It's one of my favorites.
I don't think I could play it again though, especially not without PC mods.

Game is fun. But sadly endgame on the DLC pretty much just had you running the same dungeon waiting for RNG to give you a piece of your armor. Sorta stopped when I got to that.

The voice actor you guys were talking about is David Lodge. He does indeed appear to play a character called Yarrow in Anthem. I assume that's probably the grizzled veteran that was mentioned.

Not sure I get the point of pointing a camera at the screen. It's not like I can tell how good it looks or how well it's running.

The Digital Foundry guys got a modded Switch they use for direct capture of Switch handheld, which is great, but the camera-to-screen capture doesn't quite cut it, IMO.

Also, yeah, they put Dragon's Dogma on the Switch. I'll probably buy it again and not play it, as I did the past few times.

Why did Switch not like Fiona, which is Latinised form of the Gaelic word fionn, meaning "white", "fair"? I think Nintendo is full of shit for switching it to ****a, there was no reason for that.

Dragons Dogma is great! But it is game where replaying pays off. Your best bet is to play that game without grinding overly much in the first play through...just grind so your strength is up to complete missions. The second pay-though then is better because you get more "fast travel stones". Some armor and item can be made if you have the right ingredients, so replay pays off to get awesome looking gear.

The nice part about the game is there is not just one "great set of armor" you can make, you can make cool looking stuff into high level armor. Much of the point of replaying the game is making awesome armor that looks cool too. Making an interesting Pawns that WORK is a skill. You always want to "examine" Pawns you enlist, so knowing abilities, spells, and gear does matters...knowing how to determine good Pawns quickly matters. Never assume a cool looking pawn has been set up to fight or heal effectively...assume most other players are stupid.

This is one of the weirdest games I played. I can see where the Nier Automata comparison is coming from, although it's a bit of hard ask to spend 60+ hours to get to the actual interesting part.

I like the attempt at showing the handheld performance. But, as others have said, it will take a bit more iteration

For those wondering about performance but who are too impatient to wait for a DF video: Austin tweeted about it. Seems to run smooth but there is some very noticeable pop-in.

That's probably good enough for me. I liked Dragon's Dogma when it first came out, but it ran like a goddamn slideshow on my PS3 so I bowed out pretty early.

I played the demo for this when it came out on PS3 and I don't remember it being anything more than a pretty generic-feeling high-fantasy action RPG. Not saying I thought it was *bad*, just forgettable, especially at a time where, IIRC, it felt like there were a LOT of games coming out with "dragon" in the title. In fact I am constantly confusing this with Dragon's Crown.

Seeing so many people revere it so fondly (news to me, actually) makes me want to give this Switch port a shot just to see what I missed.

Such a great game, love it. Now I really wanna play again but I'll be sticking to PC.

Does this have the Dark Arisen stuff with it? I imagine it would at this point but it seems weird they haven't put it in the title...

EDIT: FYI, The areas get bigger, Brad's basically in the tutorial section.

If you're remaking a game for the Nth time, it should be standard to put mechanics that allows players to get through the game faster in there. I would get this if I could skip to the end game. I've replayed the first few hours enough but I've never really gotten into the Dark Arisen stuff. My drive to play this always peters out once I'm done the main campaign stuff.

I remember feeling pretty similar about it after trying the demo, so I ignored for a long time, but when I actually got around to playing it it ended up being my GOTY. It does a lot of cool and fun stuff as you get deeper into it.

I googled why fion might be offensive, and it sounds like in some language it's translated as "anus" or "asshole". So there's that. I'm also pretty sure it's not Nintendo blocking it out.

Oh man how I love this game. Even if it feels a bit empty content-wise against juggernauts like Skyrim (which was released a bit earlier), the combat is so much fun. The classes are great and the pawn system was fun, tho I always wish they had implemented multiplayer on this.

I also enjoyed exploring the world, planning out where to go next, getting jumped by bandits, ogres or a damn griffin. Nights felt truly dangerous so I would wait till dawn to set out into the wild.

The best thing is of course the endless pawn chatter

Surprising that Brad didn't notice the name was censored right away, well before he confirmed creation of the character. Maybe something about doing a quick look just destroys screen awareness

I really appreciate them giving this game a look. But I feel like Brad made a less than ideal and somewhat misleading showing. Just to set the record straight on a couple of things.

  • The encampment and the starting town are not typical of the size of the game's environments. The over world is huge and seamless. The capitol city of Grand Soren is also very sizable.
  • The combat is nothing like Dark Souls. It's a lot closer to something like Devil May Cry and it does have a soft lock-on but it's not designed for the one on one tactical combat of Dark Souls. You're meant to engage with multiple enemies at a time. There air combos, launchers, light juggles, ground pounds, grapple moves, etc. Some of the special attacks are right out of Devil may Cry. You just have to buy the skills.
  • There is a dodge roll (and a double jump), but it's only available for the "Rogue" classes. The Fighter classes are meant to use shields and the Mage classes have a float ability. Any class can dash or jump out of the way of most attacks.

The combat controls are a real treasure. After a little practice, you wont need a hard lock-on. It's fast, mobile, and can be very satisfying in a "character action" sort of way. I urge people to check it out. it's on every platform at this point...

Sunk many hours into the OG game, and a ton more on PC when Dark Arisen was ported. Truly unique and fantastic game, so many cool mechanics and I loved the way it told its (albiet scarce) story. The pawn system is really neat and there are so many different builds to optimize and play with, and they all play very differently.

The biggest crime however, is with Dark Arisen they replaced the hypest title screen song in all of gaming with a really boring one. Luckily you can mod it in on PC.

@brad I highly suggest you turn on the "Zoom" option in the Switch System settings. It allows you to quickly zoom in on the screen to read text (and even lock the zoom to keep playing the game - i.e. to continue using menus zoomed in) by just tapping the home button.

It's a very recent accessability feature that doubles as a useful tool for games like Dragon's Dogma with stupidly small text.

I really dont understand these people that equate some skill-tree and/or sword and sorcery thing and automatically think it qualifies as an Role Playing Game. Based on this sort of thinking, Rise of the Tomb Raiding is an RPG.

Hell yeah, great game! I bought it for 360 and played to the end of the tutorial and decided I didn't like it at all. Fast forward 5 years or so and it's one of my favourite games of all time!

I'm hoping this and the upcoming anime do well for Capcom, enough to facilitate a Dragon's Dogma 2 or spiritual sequel of some sort on their fancy new engine.

@binarygod: I mean, it has equipment, items, multiple classes, stats you gain depending on the class you play when level up, and even the concept of forming a party with companions of various classes (pawns) are all RPG staples. It leans more on the action side of RPG but I don't think it's an inaccurate label for the game

@_brojangles_: Yeah, its an RPG. This is not even a question, every single game review site calls/categorizes it as an RPG. You hit the high point as to why it is an RPG, but I'll add that the game has robust CHARACTER CREATION that go beyond looks; litterally creating a charcter to play a role.

Loved this game on PC. I'm not a fan of Japanese RPGs generally, but this was actiony enough and soulsy enough to be engaging, fun world and monster killing is very satisfying.

Pawns can also be muted...

Drinking coffee and playing video games; thanks for asking.

EDIT: I like the concept of NPCs notifying you of monster-weaknesses through-in-game dialogue -- it's a cool, immersive detail, but seriously:

"The leg! Strike the leg! Attack the leg! I shall grab the leg to throw it off balance! Strike the head! I shall strike the head! Strike the leg! I shall strike its eye!"

ROOK. Chill the fuck. Out.
