holy shit Dan looks straight up spracked out or rolling at the beginning of this video. This is his MDMA, and apparently at the end of the video it has left a hole in his brain.

@juantopo89: That's what I'm thinking thanks to the late game impressions.

@vierastalo: I also find it surprising that Dan wouldn't love that movie, or at least, saw that movie when he was younger and loved it then. Boondock Saints is like vigilante Atlas Shrugged; dudes watch it in their late teens/early 20s and think it's the best goddamn story ever told.

Play long enough to get Ziplines then you never have to walk anywhere

Build a network of Ziplines across the country and you can just quickly get everywhere and your cargo weight and configuration is never a concern

that last hologram is Junji Ito! all these cameos are kind of jarring because like in the first half of the video, you’re very much like “who is this person from (in real life)???”

This has to be one of the biggest 180 on video. Going from "holy shit this is great and i am so into it" to "i hate everything about this and never want to think about it ever again". Its kinda fascinating.

The bit about every piece of music in the Joker being "so on the nose" from Dan just makes me sad now.

Once again, Dan reiterates that he just Rambo’d his way through MGS, and once again I facepalm. He claims to be a MGS mark more than a Kojima mark, but even then he only engages with the MGS games in a specific way that somewhat misses the point of the gameplay.

I hope one day someone makes a game that is 100% The Running Man (film version) compared to how MGS1-3 is like, 40% The Running Man, 40% Escape from New York, 20% nanomachines/philosophy/politics. Then Dan can further walk his fandom back, saying he thought he was a MGS mark but actually he’s a The-Running-Man-as-a-video-game mark.

I'm surprised NONE of the crew flat out 'likes this game', or can articulate what in general, is masterful at what it wants to do, but has been recieved by GB, at least with Dan, as if they had bought a ticket to Kojima's The Expendibles, and got Kojima's The Martian. I am less surprised Dan bounced right off this thing, and was not able to appreciate positively what Kojima very deliberately made half-job-half-social-experiment with the player's time and 'joy' as 'relief' and 'eventual', which in vinny's words, is NOT Dan's kind of game- but given this thing has Kojima-gearness ALL through-out the game when you're not climbing, deploying equipment, building, and horror-stealthing, all to mask the heart of the game's first conclusive core fundamental- building. For someone who loves both metal gear and Stardew Valley, shadow of the colossus, silent hill, The Martian, and Interstellar (stalker, Metal Gear Solid 2's predictions on the future etc)- I am personally saddened by just how much of this Dan misses out on because he just does not like what you do as a core loop, which I find fascinating, which I believe is where the game is widely, widely divisive, and will remain that way. Even the story, which is LONG, is shaped in a way that, for a certain section of science fiction fans who enjoy the 'lingering shot' pace of a very unpleasant / hostile / bleak world, which some of the best experiences/stories have been told.

They articulate well why they don't like the game in the beastcast but this is maybe the ONE GAME where I might say the crew's range of media, literature exposure, and preconceived notion of what to expect ouf of A.) a video game and B.) Hideo Kojima's intentions, are inherently limited by this very lack of exposure/appreciation for the core ideologies translated into gameplay, and story, were with what he wanted to do with Death Stranding as a naturally divisive piece of work that manages to successfully pull so many deep-cut science fiction ideas of suffering mixed with unexpected joy or 'introspective gaming moments'- and come out the other side with something original and unlike any game out there, which, for better or worse, is 'something to behold' for sure, which is one statement GB has made that I can agree with.

Not that it even matters at all, but I've seen the user score on metacritic go from a four to a seven, a lot of them scores that have been revised after the first 8-15 hour unwrap, and then revised again after the 25-30 hour mark, where the 'game' part of the game actually diversifies and expands the loop to the point that the 'playing' part is less survival and more about efficiency and more recognizable and enjoyable to 'play'. Again, Kojima made a half-job-half-game-half-movie-at a book's pace, so I think while the flashy opening would absolutely reel Dan's ADD in, the harshness of the next 10 hours almost predictably prompts a re-enforced repeat of what happened with him and Red Dead 2, just a lot earlier and more emphatic because of his hopes for a Kojima game. It's just not a Kojima product for Dan's almost universally toned and without being rude, sometimes limiting capacity for 'artistic decision' in a format that has the kind of 'rules' established by any other out there, upon which most games-related media relies on to judge things. Without those, it's a hostile, confusing, messy, reaction-grabbing THING that is hard to objectively call good or bad, because it's a matter of how in-sync you are with the inspiration material that Kojima's brain/team used to build Stranding. I do not think Dan likes any of these things, so naturally, from the message behind the gameplay, to the gameplay minute to minute, hour to hour, Dan cannot and will not appreciate what this game wants to do, and instead of just not enjoying it, he hates it, which I guess was predictable, but a little disappointing for how the game has landed with me, given a week of almost universally negative GB coverage.

Every time GB crew sneer at the themes and subtext of this game as heavyhanded and unsubtle, and use the tired "First year pyschology student" trope to lazily describe what they think is a shared shorthand for something, I wonder if they actually do understand the themes.

About 50% of the way through this, and really enjoying it. Totally hits its stride at chapter 3, where Alex was at in this quicklook.

A one act play.

Alex: Vehicles are bad. *loads weight to 122/125 lbs* Nobody comments.

Everyone: It's so tedious!

Dan: I don't want to hold L2/R2 through the whole game!

The year in which Dan Ryckert learned that his love of Metal Gear isn't for the video game, it's because he's a fan of Anime.

@north6: Agreed. I feel like so much of this game just apparently sailed right by them. I'm glad they are finished covering it because its just been such a bummer seeing them so completely miss the mark. Like one example is they frequently complain about how "this looks nothing like America" and of course it doesn't... that is literally the main point of the entire game. The Death Stranding fractured America in both a literal and figurative way. Entire ecosystems have been completely up rooted and changed.
