Donald Duck in particular is much bigger in Europe than in the US. The Duck comics were huge here in Norway, and "everyone" knows who Don Rosa is.

"Why are you into [Disney characters], you adult man?", uttered the adult man who's into wrestling.

I found this humorous as well. This coming from the man who loves wrestling, cool guy stuff, and has never tried mayonnaise.

He didn't say it in the context of being into a character, but going to Disney Land and the like. But Dan's the first to admit how dumb wrestling is.

Disney XD are reviving DuckTales for the 2017 season, so it possibly can be referred to a recent show.

How is going to Disney Land as an adult any different from him going to wrestling events as an adult?

I am of the same attitude, I like what I like and anyone who doesnt like it can go to hell. I didn't get to go to Disney World till I was in my 30s, and it was great fun.

It's just a pot calling the kettle black situation.

World of Illusion co-op run some time? Its similarly short but great.

@abcfsk: Carl Barks has great stories, and I love the artwork. But Don Rosa... man. His stories are beautiful, funny and suspenseful. Tears have been shed over his stories. For me, he is up there with other legendary storysmiths like Neil Gaiman, J.R.R. Tolkien and Douglas Adams.

I have been known to be dismissive of things at times. I'm sure every one has as some point. But:

1. I am not an online personality, my voice is not heard by thousands of people

2. Admitting you are dismissive of something, does not necessarily make it okay to be dismissive of something.

I do my best not to make sweeping statements about people's interests. I understand everyone has different tastes. But I also try not to make fun of people, when I myself have my own childish interests.

Looney Tunes weren't a show but a series of cinematic shorts, disney had the exact same thing called Merry Melodies lol

Actually (pedant hat on) Disney had Silly Symphonies. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies (started after Looney Tunes and Silly Symphonies) were both Warner.

This is my favorite thing with DD:

What was the DD cartoon called in which Donald was a cool dude uncle wearing an Hawaiian shirt? I liked that show the most!

Also Gizmo Duck and Darkwing Duck are the best ducks.

@abcfsk: Agreed. "The Life & Times of Scrooge McDuck" is more amazing if you learn the history behind it. Don Rosa wanted to weld the past adventures Carl Banks's Scrooge mentioned into a cohesive narrative arc. He even took the worst thing Scrooge ever did (cheating a native tribe out of their land)* and rather than retconning it, made it the turning point for Scrooge's development from a decent-yet-ambitious businessman to a cold-hearted moneygrubber. (He got better later, but it still resulted in him being estranged from his family for 2 decades.)

*Scrooge is best characterized as a scrupulous-yet-greedy adrenaline junkie. He loves money, but he also made it by "being tougher than the toughies and smarter than the smarties, and he made it square". So the early-installment weirdness of him cheating a tribe out of their land was thorny for many fans.

Here in the Netherlands, the Donald duck weekly magazine is huge. according to research, 81% of the kids in the age bracket 6-12 read it last year. While we had some Ducktales on TV, most of the Donald Duck content came from reading it.

We also have some different character names.

  • Scrooge McDuck = Uncle Dagobert
  • Daisy Duck = Katrien Duck
  • Huey,Dewey, Louie = Kwik, Kwek , Kwak
  • Gyro Gearloose = Willy Wortel (Willy Carrot)
  • Goosetave Gander = Guus Geluk (Gus Luck)
  • The Beagle Brats = De Zware Jongens (The Heavy Boys)

Yeah, having Scrooge alienate everyone in his life because of his greed was a bold choice. One of my favourite comics ever.

Also fuck yeah, Don Rosa is the best. As a danish kid growing up in the 90' that man was a god.

The Donald comics are hugely loved in Europe. Carl Barks set it off, Don Rosa took it further. Don Rosa is an actual superstar in several European countries, genuinely the most famous comic book artist/author of any genre. For good reason - he's done amazing stories. Witty, gritty, full of detail and life and even historical context. Highlight probably being the epic saga "The Life & Times of Scrooge McDuck". You can buy his Duck works in chronological order from Fantagraphics' new collections The Don Rosa Library.

Isn't one of the Indiana Jones films just a Carl Barks?

I was super in to the Donald Ducks Weekly comics and read collected editions on vacation trips, I still want to buy the Life & Times of Scrooge one day.

I stopped reading Donald comics because of a weird reason, I realized every sentence ended with a exclamation mark.

A lot of the Disney stuff I watched as a kid were through VHS. I had the typical movie releases like Lion King and Aladdin but I also had others like a collection of Christmas shorts. These other tapes were typically cheaper than the full movie releases and contained your standard Disney characters like Mickey, Donald, Minnie, Goofy, ect.

Also, like Dan, I grew up knowing the Disney channel was too expensive and only watching it every few months when they gave it out free. Until my cable company finally got it anyways. Of course I thought we were special or somehow Disney had made a mistake and we weren't supposed to still be getting it.

I still like Disney and enjoy going to Disney World because it's such a weirdly dedicated place. Unlike Universal or other amusement parks Disney is almost religiously dedicated to the fan experience. It's like both watching and being a part of a cult. And seeing their huge machine of parks, hotels, and mass transit all work together is pretty crazy.
