The forklift races seem really fun.

Really fun.

EDIT: What's with the bootleg Crash Bandicoot music during the forkliftin'.

EDIT2: Christopher Lloyd melted in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and that was a gnarly scene. (As a kid)

Who framed Rodger rabbit was based on a book by Gary K. Wolf, the first one Who Censored Roger Rabbit? was the basis of the film. Although the book is much darker in tone and it is Roger that dies..

Two later books were released Who P-P-P-Plugged Roger Rabbit? and Who Wacked Roger Rabbit? Are all separate stories but are closer to the film.

surprisingly the first two are pretty good reads, the last one was less so

For those that care the movie did not invent Roger Rabbit the book Who Censored Roger Rabbit? by Gary K. Wolf which Disney purchased the movie rights to did. However the sentiment of the answer is correct in that the movie is the first animated appearance of Roger Rabbit.

Edit @poperamone Damn beat me to it.

The photograph Dan mentioned, Lunch atop a Skyscraper, is of the RCA Building rather than the Empire State Building, and is believed to have been staged for promotional purposes. That said, that doesn't mean they're not actually up there.

EDIT: It was 1997 that Hong Kong passed from British to Chinese control. If memory serves, the transition constitutes some of the backdrop for the film Infernal Affairs (upon which The Departed was based).

It's still kinda catchy.

My favorite part about Deep Rising was Academy Award winner Djimon Hounsou, right off of Amistad, as Expendable Black Dude Who Gets Hit In The Head With A Pickaxe Ten Minutes In.

Shenmue was probably fun for kids, but as an adult you realize what an awful depressing picture this game paints.

People are always sad, terrifying gangs snooping around, business is going good for no one, fishermans are always empty, tired harbor workers eat their lunch sitting on a cold concrete floor.

The fact that Vinny has some trouble with maps is interesting. There have been a number of maps in the game and while he gets some of it he seems to have trouble with some part of it

Map use and first person navigation is pretty outwardly intangible, all the activity is happening inside that human brain. You have to have ability to shift perspective from the street-level view, to the bird’s eye perspective of a map. And then the ability to rotate objects or the 'map symbolism' for roads in your mind and then back out to the street-level view.

I'm okay with maps, not fantastic, but pretty good. My one issue is with scale and distance. I'm not good at judging distance. I really have to look at my odometer to know what a mile or two miles is, and if my GPS says go 500 ft I'm always anticipating turns too quickly.

This is what's special about Shenmue. You talk to your co-workers and find out that they have motivations that drive them. There are dozens of random characters like that, with a schedule they follow and lives they live that are not part of your personal quest in any way.

Kondo, the last guy on that T-bar you talked to also works in the Tomato store in Dobuita earlier in the game and apparently just started as a forklift driver just like Ryo.

That two-for-the-price-of-one kick was really sweet.

Game is finally picking up, too bad it took so long to get here. Hopefully it will end on a strong enough note to convince Vinny that Shenmue 2 is worth playing.

@danryckert@alex

According to international standard ISO 8601, Monday is the first day of the week. It is followed by Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Sunday is the 7th and final day.

Although this is the international standard, several countries, including the United States and Canada, consider Sunday as the start of the week.

First fucked up units of measurement and now this. I'm getting sick of your shit, United States.

It's funny Dan remembers the very ending ,but not the 2 huge events before the end. SPOILERS!!

How about the Nozomi kidnapping and motorcycle ride or the 50 man brawl, the brawl that stops Chen's son from going with to Hong Kong. The Nozomi scene is awesome except with the way Vinny rushed though the game and missed half of her scenes, that relationship barely scratched the surface. So I bet they will hardly understand the impact. To bad for the viewers. It would have been impactful to this 'story driven game'. Yea and Vinny don't train or practice can't wait to see you get you butt kicked in any of the real fights.

I find is strange to have Sunday as the first day of the week because I'm from Europe.

Generalizing a bit, Most of the Americas, India and Japan have Sunday as the first day, Europe, Australia and most of Asia have Monday as first day, and North Africa and the Middle East have Saturday as the first day.

For me it makes just as much sense as writing dates in a mixed up M/D/Y way, that is to say none at all.

Speaking of ripping models of Shenmue, I came across this thread where someone figured out how to swap character models in this game with an emulator (I think), there's some real gems there.

This is the thread if anyone's interested in looking into it:

In the UK Sunday is traditionally seen as the first day of the week, but I think most people consider Monday the real first day of the week now. Microsoft Outlook certainly arranges all calendars with Monday as the first day.

Monday is the first day of the week to me. Must be an American thing. Saying that monday being the first day is "insane" seems insane to me. It's not that far fetched to think that it would be the first day.

There are seven days in a week. Monday is the first day of the week and Sunday is the last day of the week.

This is the first time that I have EVER heard that there are people who think that Saturday is the last day of the week. Dan, you're just insane.

The weekend is the nice little vacation at the end of each week and Sunday is your last weekend day before a new week starts on Monday.

To think of it any other way is simply for crazy people. But I guess that explains why Dan would think Saturday is the last day...

Historically speaking, it's a lot more complicated than that. From my understanding it's based a lot in religious malarkey and which day is actually the day God rested. It's probably why you see some places worshiping on Saturday, and some on Sunday. That said, from a cursory glance over some old material (so take this with a grain of salt, then take that grain of salt with a grain of salt), Sunday is what was originally called the first day of the week. It wasn't until Christians came along and wanted to differentiate themselves that they made it the seventh day.

The reality is that it doesn't fucking matter because nobody anywhere describes days based on their place in the week. You don't go, "hey, meet me downtown on the fifth day of the week". Calendars, at least in the US, like to list Sundays before Mondays, so I think a lot of folks just look to that, I guess. Frankly, taking a hard stance is probably the only crazy thing here.

The shit talking about the animations seems forced and out of place given the context of the production. The more I hear of Alex the more I hear of Jeff. Those two are some cynical motherfuckers. I love jabs at games and I support a lot of the negativity around Shenmue (which is slightly more playful than hateful) but Alex just seems to spring on any opportunity he can to raise the volume of his voice and shit all over something. It's bumming me out the same way years and years of listening to Jeff find excuses to tear things apart bums me out. Maybe we can direct some of that subscriber money at turning down their "lol everything is terrible" knobs like 10%?

For anyone that's curious, by fighting and practising moves, you level them up and once you reach the master level with a move, it's actually more powerful and even a different animation. I thought that was a nice touch when I originally played it.

I've been totally down with all the other weird bumbling about in this endurance run (it's kinda the best part), but oh boy watching these guys try to read a map is frustrating. I'm pretty sure they already realised in another episode that the map automatically rotates to show which direction you're facing, and they've already spent hours in this tiny triangle, so it's kind of baffling to watch.

Perceptual reasoning is one of the few things that I'm apparently pretty good at, so I personally find it really difficult to understand why other people have so much trouble with it.

My fiance is very intelligent and she's a brilliant illustrator who's weirdly skilled in formal language and copy-editing, but for some reason she just can't read maps of any kind. It's been a source of great contention between us, because she doesn't drive so she's always relegated to the unwilling navigator on long trips haha.

@monkeyking1969: Extra weird, because the maps in this game (and in actual Japan) are oriented so that the top of the map is always the direction you're facing, not necessarily North.
