This was a great Endurance Run. Shenmue has not aged well but "What's grooving bro?!" will never get old.

Rewatching this whole thing over a way too short a timeframe has only confirmed what I thought on previous viewings - even disregarding pacing issues, the narrative just doesn't do anything interesting with what it sets up. The intro of the game sets up Hazuki-sensei being killed after killing another man, yet Ryo's reaction is to do exactly that - attempt to kill Lan Di, thus perpetuating the cycle.

Instead of actually addressing this irony and doing something actually interesting, such as other characters confronting Ryo ("Hey Ryo, you are Lan Di"....), we instead get a dozen hours of "Hey <random character>, do you know anything about <next tedious breadcrumb>?". Shenmue may be incredibly ambitious for the time, but I feel like it misses the mark in every conceivable way.
