Armed and Rangerous EP 01

OMG! they absolutely need to watch SUPER SENTAI after this! I would love to hear their realizations of how the original footage affected the writing more. I personally watched the show for the first 6 months it was on thinking it was a live action VOLTRON, only to be crushed. Years later I found out about SENTAI and it all made sense.

I only ever saw a bit of the first season of MMPR as a kid before they cancelled it over here. I eventually got into Kamen Rider between the years 2006 and 2014 which was a good time but have since fallen off of it. Maybe I'll try watching the show on Netflix again, but man I tried it once recently and even watching it out of intellectual curiosity I found it surprisingly hard to go back to.

@janman You sounded a little blown out on this episode (to me, at least). Love listening to you talk about things you're passionate about so I'm all in on this feature.

All these years, I've never signed up for Netflix. But this might make me do it. Fantastic episode, I could just feel the passion!

So excited for this podcast. I've been a fan of Power Rangers since literally day 1; I still remember watching the premiere on Fox Kids! I watched every season up through Lost Galaxy, when I finally fell off. However, I later got into Super Sentai and then Kamen Rider (and just stayed watching Ultraman last week).

As a suggestion, I would really love for y'all to do an episode where you watch the first few episodes of Zyuranger and talk about what you think of it, and how it compares to MMPR. As great as Rita Repulsa is, I think the Japanese version of the character, Bandora, is even better. That actress was clearly having a lot of fun with the role.

Loved this episode, and can't wait for the next!

For those that want a visual element, I just put the show on mute with subtitles while listening to the podcast. This first episode is definitely long enough for the first 4 episodes. lol.

Love this, never seen a second of Power Rangers but this' got All Systems Goku vibes in a good way. My only critique would be having someone on that hasn't seen it before so it's a bit easier to follow, but this is good regardless!

Watched the show as a kid but don't remember any of it, so I'm following along. As you mentioned, these episodes and probably the entire franchise are so very aimed at kids that I'm firmly out of my comfort zone. However, this podcast was worth the struggle. Super fun discussion, cracked me up a few times (what was with that warping child?), and I can't wait for the next pod.

Great pod! Love the enthusiasm, love the energy, love the vibes between Jan and Matt.

My only recommendation? A little bit more structure to the discussion of each episode! Y'all are jumping around SO MUCH with your commentary and ideas as you run down your show notes. It becomes really hard to follow when I don't actually know what's going on in the show itself - I'll totally attribute that to just the sheer excitement and enthusiasm, though.

As a child, my big takeaway (aside from how cool I thought the movie was) was finding it jarring how dramatically higher budget that movie was compared to the show.

As someone that watched... way too much of the Power Rangers Marathon on twitch a few years ago (an still regrets not having the emotes) I am so ready for this.

At 1:30:50 Matt wonders why Ernie would be so weirded out by hearing a communicator go off.

People in 1991 didn't go around emitting electronic sounds*.

It was a time when cell phones were super rare and when watches typically wouldn't do much more than make a short soft high pitched beep.

So a noise like what the communicators make would definitely be out of place. A person making such a noise would be super weird and noticeable.

* Walkmans and boomboxes aside.

I've watched Power Rangers so much as a kid. A lot of it out of order though, because of some weird scheduling stuff here in the Netherlands. I remember watching Power Rangers the Movie in theaters before the show on tv even introduced Rocky, Aisha and Adam. I remember being so confused by that. :D

Loved this episode, my favorite thing Giant Bomb's done since the new regime, nice work @janman! I enjoyed Matt's inclusion on the Duel Links video so I knew I'd enjoy this going in, immediately good chemistry between you guys!

I actually sculpt figures for Hasbro on a freelance basis and have done most of the basic line (and some Lightning Collection) figures for both Beast Morphers and Dino Fury. A note on the Green/Black ranger figures for the current season is that they always release the core three rangers at the start and then do a "Wave 2" with more villains and additional Rangers that get added to the roster later in the season. They certainly are in production, they just haven't been released yet, I think Covid pushed back a lot of stuff (including supply chain and production), the actual show didn't finish in a super timely manner because of this either.

I enjoyed this even if I had no idea what they were talking about.
My partner absolutely loved it however, having grown up with MMPR.

This was a lot of fun. These guys have great chemistry. I remember the Power Rangers being on Twitch a few years ago , and it was fun to have that stuff on. I can't imagine really sitting down and focusing on it fully, but it's good background stuff for sure. I completely forgot all the comedic bits with Bulk & Skull, but honestly those are some of the highlights. I always think about the Samurai Pizza Cats and being excited by their costumes and the GUN they get fired out of... and then i watch the episode and it's boring and lifeless as hell. That show could've used a Bulk & Skull.

I think people nowadays are being very concerned with the environment because it's straight up fucking shit up for us all, and it's not something that only hits 3rd world countries we can turn our backs towards. We're past the stage where 'being nice' to the planet is why you'd should care.

I like this show a lot and plan on listening to every episode, but y'all I simply cannot watch along. I barely made it through the first episode. I'm glad the show brings you joy and I can benefit from it via this show.

Matt asked if anyone will be watching MMPR for the first time, that's ME! I am an anime fan but I've never seen a Super Sentai style show before. I've had a great time with these first 4 episodes.

This was a ton of fun, these guys have great chemistry and energy and I think as the show goes on it'll only get better. I've long debated getting into Kamen Rider or Ultraman so this kind of scratches a tokusatsu itch for me.

Listened too this earlier on a podcast app but had too come to the site just too say how much I'm looking fowrdard to this series great so far

I used to watch the rangers as car crash television, so surprised to find myself really enjoying this. The hosts go a long way in pulling you along. If they keep being this good, i'll have to start watching some episodes.

@sthef: I knew about the fiasco with pay around Season 2. But its very interesting the way Japanese studio had to film scenes with Green Ranger (supposedly Tommy) saving Pink Ranger (supposedly Kim.) because that was the direction the american studio wanted to take the story.

Jan I'm very interested in your inside knowledge in the comics and how it detours from the series. In a way just like Pokemon

Really hope you get to Zeo. Was really impressed with that when I saw it for the first time a few years back. Has the original characters but was the first time they completely swapped the suits, zords, villains etc. to a new sentai.

Also, don't forget the first Power Rangers (1995?) movie, even though it's not canon to the show!
