I was wondering if they'd mention Stadia, that fine product, and they do.
Because really, who isn't talking about the hit platform Stadia.
I mean, I'm not, because unlike Giant Bomb, Stadia isn't world wide

This may be unpopular with some, but I like them openly voicing political views. These are scary times and I like hearing how my internet friends feel about real shit.

Also, please do not vote for Trump folks.

YES!! FINALLY somebody at Giant Bomb has good things to say about VR. As a mostly VR-only player now, I was really getting tired of the CONSTANT crapping on the most advanced technology in the industry right now. Once you do certain things in VR, it makes other attempts or implementations of things seem outright stupid.

I’m sad abbey didn’t get a Quest though. With as much as she liked Rimg Fit Adventures, there is a whole, much more serious world of fitness/active games out there. I literally burned 1000 calories in one session of BoxVR(for an achievement) and it never once felt like work. It was fun the whole time.

Aww thanks for talking about the Darkest Dungeon II announcement on the podcast @alex and for the kind words about DD1. Shared with the team! And also thanks for the boardgame shoutout @vinny we are excited about partnering with Mythic Games on that and I'm personally very excited to paint the figures.

A few of us are longtime fans of the site so always very excited when something we are working on gets a mention.

'Its Animaniacs all the way down' -Vinny

I wonder how many people had this go over their head. I dont think Ive heard that expression used since taking data structures in University. (in form of Elephants all the way down) and in reference to data structure queues.

@ybbaaabby Some VR recs from me

Paper Beast - Beautiful puzzle game where you're helping out paper animals in the desert. The design of the animals is incredible and VR makes it even better.

Pistol Whip - Workout game where you're shooting dudes in the face on the rhythm of the music.

A Fisherman's Tale - Another puzzle game where you're trying to get to the top of the lighthouse to turn on the light. This one is quite short.

GNOG - Extremely charming puzzle game where you're exploring these toy-like robot heads and figure out how to make them go. Just a very relaxing fun game.

I guess there's a lot of puzzles in VR :P

The first Nier made me play it for a long time just to finish all the very time consuming side quests. The best part is that it made me ignore the urge to 100% any game ever since, and my life is better for it.

Man, I need to get back to Half-Life Alyx before GOTY season. I really dug what I've played of that game. It becomes almost like a horror game at points and it's really awesome.

A couple other VR games I recommend for Abby since she asked:

Racket NX --- really awesome EDM racquet ball game. Takes a bit to get used to the headset wire and not getting your feet tangled but it's otherwise an awesome game.

To The Top --- pretty fun parkour tower climbing game with some decent chillwave music as a backdrop

Moss --- I think you've played this? But if not, it's a fun little third person adventure game where you play as a mouse within a fairytale diorama.

Soundboxing --- Sort of like beat saber but boxing. The best part is it has youtube integration and you can make your own beat maps. This addresses my issues with beat saber where I too am not as into the EDM music.

So glad to hear you got a VR headset. I love VR so fucking much and I wish more people would play more of it and talk more about it instead of retelling the tales of yesteryear when someone got sick and then didn't play for 8 months and then got sick again and stuff.....

Hope you continue loving it. Battle Royale game came out yesterday called Population One, and it's sort of like fortnite but with climbing and gliding and shit. It's really really cool. Would be sweet if you maybe did a quick look, the game is cross compatible with Quest and windows MR as well, so you could technically squad up with Jeff and Brad and do some dumb shit in there... 3 Player teams.. Sorta Fortnite in VR.. Just saying..

Anyways, VR yay :D

Also, Vinny, check out Vox Machinae..... That's what you want. Get an Oculus Quest and play that shit from your PC wirelessly on the Quest. The Quest works for all VR. It's 300 bucks.

Best Buy Canada did the same thing as Abby's Oculus when they shipped out my Ring Fit Adventure a month ago - shipping label slapped on the product box, shipped as is. I think they have just stopped caring and are operating on a literal shoestring.

My mail carrier was on the ball about this being an item very susceptible to theft and left a tag so I had to go to a post office to pick it up, versus doing the normal Covid-era parcel drop at my front door.

@mostlysquares: I agree about the annoying stories of people who get sick playing VR. People ALSO got sick when Doom came out. I had LOTS of people tell me they couldn’t play it because of motion sickness. But that was never allowed to become THE DOMINANT headline about Doom, because SOME people had no problem with it and it was absolutely amazing.

I think we are reaching a tipping point though. The psvr sub reddit was flooded with “I was anti-vr but now I tried it and I love it!!” Posts during lockdown. I think we are reaching the point where people will start ignoring the haters.

It just sucks that the industry has become so risk-averse and has suck Stockholm syndrome for retreads of the same-old-thing that it takes 5 years now to introduce something new. The industry used to be full of people who liked new tech JUST BECAUSE it was new.

@avioto: so glad someone other than me has played paper beasts! Chahi still got it!!

@ybbaaabby: couple more VR recs - I think you'd love Virtual Virtual Reality, it's a funny and trippy little adventure game from Tenderclaws, the same people that did Wide Ocean, Big Jacket. It's a little older now but kind of a classic that a lot of people slept on! Their newer VR game, The Under Presents, is INCREDIBLE and free, but especially don't sleep on the part that costs money, their weird immersive live theater multiplayer thing that is ending really soon so the tickets are way cheap right now!

Edit: Oops nvm the live theater thing ended but you can still run into live actors in the overworld and the players can't talk so it's not weird it's just kind of pantomimey and wild

OH ALSO CHECK OUT HALF + HALF THAT SHIT IS FREE AND FUN AS HECK

The album Shame by Uniform is the best heavy listening to be had this year. Highly recommended if you haven't checked it out, Alex and anyone who likes extreme metal/noise/industrial sounds.

I also really have liked the new Code Orange album as well. Not their best but a very consistent band.

For my Rift S games recommendations, I'd recommend if you can get it on sale Lone Echo. It's definitely more of an experience than a game, but it has an incredibly good zero-g movement system and the graphics are great. It's short though (I think it took me 5 hours) and the second act is kind of underwhelming IMO though.

Asgard's Wrath is a solid action Norse myth RPG. The beginning hours are a little slow but once you get past tutorial land it gets a lot better.

Especially from Bakalar regarding Boneworks when he was specifically warned that it was for experienced VR users and he opted to play it anyway and ignore all the warning signs of looming motion sickness.

In terms of recommendations, I think Oculus Adobe Medium for me is the real standout and evidence that VR, in some fashion, is here to stay. I had no experience with sculpting and 3D modeling prior to Medium, and it's been nothing short of remarkable how quickly it's onboarded me into ZBrush and Maya/Blender. I feel like Vinny would take to it like a duck to water, especially for miniature sculpting and eventual 3D printing.

Its been growing in popularity steadily for some time so I'm not surprised. Not very niche really in the grand scheme now (although its all relative of course).

Just from Spotify I've seen for example SALEM's music steadily climb to where its got like 2 mill plays on the big songs and stuff. S and S has more even I believe. I think it'll continue to grow though. Dark music is in (go figure) and in all genres.

So in conclusion: Drake will put out a Witchouse album in 2021 and ruin it.

@hughj: I completely forgot to also mention Adobe Medium. I love how intuitive it is. It was fun to fill up a corner of my Oculus Home with my creations. Sure, almost nobody actually uses Oculus Home but it makes it feel a bit more like my own personal space with them there.

yay , @ybbaaabby

thanks for actually giving vr a fair shake instead of begrudgingly looking at it and when it doesn't immediately do exactly what you want to then dismiss it.

I have said it before but the way Jeff handled feeling sick in Boneworks is the exact way if you want to make yourself as sick as possible. so if you start to feel sick STOP! take a break. feel better and then the next time you try the same game you can probably go a little longer.

The problem that you guys had is that you never really give yourselves long enough to acclimate to vr. you, as a group who complains about getting motion sick, would only try it occasionally and I'm sure, would push it for the segment/bit. instead of playing over days/weeks where you stop at first sign of motion sickness.

for game recommendations here is a list that I tend to think is "must try" and that also haven't been mentioned as much earlier.

Lone Echo : can be finished in 4-6 hours, this game/walking sim, to me, shows how you can be IN a movie as a character.

Chronos : one of a few 3rd person games that shows vr doesn't need to be first person. This is a prequel of sorts to Remnant: From the Ashes

Wilson's Heart : this is a "spooky" game as it's kind of like being in a 50's horror movie. there are some adventure style puzzles. one thing that kind of stumped me towards the beginning if you can't move the lever in the steam room, use both hands. I didn't notice the prompt.

Stormland : an insomniac game that got released right after they got acquired by Sony. very pretty

Asgard's Wrath: very pretty "full" 30-40 hour game.

Edge of Nowhere: 3rd person tomb raider/uncharted - ish game with a cthulu-like theme 4-ish hour game

Hellblade : I think you have played this. the way they have enabled vr is neat and shows that it would work for other 3rd person games that weren't' explicitly made with vr in mind.

EDIT----

Can't believe I forgot to mention

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners. - just a very good mix of interaction with some light survival and crafting. Good vr interactions without the jank and abandoning all the to physics solver like boneworks did.

Definitely check it out.

End EDIT----

if you aren't sick of them both Skyrim and Fall Out 4 with mods are great to see in vr.

there are still more but these can def get you started.

hope you enjoy.

EDIT 2 since I keep getting a csrf? token invalid when I try to post a new comment.--

the common issue was the with cv 1 not the S. make sure the plug is in all the way, I have heard some units need to have the headphone jack forced a little. but also try different headphones. I have recently noticed some jacks that have problems with headphone/buds that have extra control channels and a "dumber" stereo headset will work, not specifically with the rift S but newer devices that I would think should just work.

Half life Alyx is a Half Life game. the sections have a path, sometimes there are branches but they are levels.

so if Half life 1 and 2 were a "ride" then yes so is Half Life Alyx. :P

End EDIT 2

Reply All is such a good podcast. One series of episodes had one of the hosts forming a relationship with someone who scam called him, and they followed up with it a year or so later. Another one involved a guy who had a very vivid memory of a song that he could not find anywhere, and they help him try to find it. This involves reconstructing the song, from memory, in a studio. It's so well done.
