Regarding core mechanics you missed in games: my first time through Resident Evil 4, I didn't know you could run, and made the game very hard for myself.

AoW Planetfall plays very well on X1X for everyone's info. The ultra rare, actually totally functional ported 4X game for consoles...bless you Paradox/Triumph. Kind of a Civ/Xcom lovechild with a sense of humor and quirkiness in a very good way.

I'm with Vinny, I knew nothing about the Matrix before seeing it in theaters. I don't remember much if any sort of hype for it. I barely remember there being commercials.

I saw The Matrix in theaters back in ‘99 and really enjoyed it. I heard about it mostly through word of mouth. If I remember correctly, I think it got pulled after Columbine and was released again later that year.

"Planetfall" is a game from 1983 that came out on the Apple 2 / TRS-80.

Were @vinny and @alex thinking of Planetside? That was a PC game from 2003.

It had a sequel (Planetside 2) that came out for PC in 2012 and PS4 in 2015.

Regarding finishing games while missing core mechanics: Dan and Drew were basically unaware/ignoring the camouflage mechanic in the Phantom Pain Metal Gear Scanlon. Made it pretty hard to watch, since Drew got spotted from a mile away constantly and had to slow-mo shoot people all the time.

I’m not sure if the rest of the Beast crew realize what they’re in for with this DK 64 feature. Super Mario Sunshine truly is a masterpiece compared to that game.

Any duder out there kind enough to give me a timestamp on when they discuss the new feature/show? I won't be able to listen to the whole episode for a while but wouldn't mind skipping ahead to hear that portion.

Hey Vinny, Boxboy + Boxgirl is amazing, but be forewarn, the endings are serious... the majority of the game is light hearted, but those endings (there are 4) are a bit bittersweet (i like them a lot, but i don't know if they'll play well with kids)

I thought Steal My Sunshine was a very good format that is also extremely duplicateable on other games. I'm glad to hear that will be happening. I was expecting you guys to just go down a line of 3d marios, playing mario odyssey with "steal my moonshine" or stuff like that. I'm glad you are branching out into non mario games though, there's a lot of potential for this format and many many games.

@bradley: I live in Korea where they are being phased out, but you will still encounter them from time to time. I only had one instance that had to be used in an actual squat emergency and...I just took my damn shorts and underwear off because I still haven't figueed it out. I don't know if you are supposed to use the rails they give you to lean back or just keep your legs as far apart as possible and really work your core...but if I'm using one it will likely be as much of an emergency as it was last time and I just dont... trust things to not potentially go in a variety of directions.

I have seen underwear balled up in the corner of the stalls before so maybe if you have to use one you just embrace that not all of your soldiers will be making it home.

Really looking forward to the Donkey Kong 64 feature! I have a ton of nostalgia for that game - I somehow owned DK64 but not Super Mario 64 back in the day - and played it a bunch, though I never actually finished it. I also remember enjoying the multiplayer as some dumb fun, they should mess around with that as a one-off - doubt it holds up haha.

Ha. Due to the return of CastleVinnyStainia, I started watching the old ones which I hadn't seen all of. Then I started looking up Dracula movies, from Lugosi to Hammer and beyond. I ended up watching Dracula Dead and Loving It. I turned down the color and upped the contrast a bit to make it black and white like Young Frankenstein. Though they did seem to over saturate the color like an old Hammer movie, I liked the black and white version.

I've had the gas station barbecue Dan talks about and it is REALLY good. There was an event I used to attend in KCMO and that was one of the featured stops.

Wait...did dan do some revisionist history...Saints row 4 is now considered ehhh....the same saints row that got GOTY list by GB. Dang the look backs at old games is annoyingly dower. People seem to have a hard time either carrying nostalgia goggles or trashing their goggles. Good games are good games. Time only makes your perception of them change but they are still good since at their time they were good. tetris 1 is not tetris 99 but that doesnt make me think tetris 1 is ehh.

Great discussion on the theater experience question. Seeing Primer in a theater must've been pretty bizarre - what an awesome movie.

My (not necessarily good, but memorable) experience would be me and a bunch of friends all sneaking out on a school night to go see South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut and almost getting into a fight with another large group of people, who were also the only other people in the theater besides us. Someone yelled at them to shut up and things escalated from there, but never came to blows. We all got in trouble later.

Any of the mini consoles that use USB for controllers, like the ps classic or Genesis, get a $5 USB extension cable. Problem solved. The nes and snes have many options available to convert to USB for about $10.
