@danryckert If you wave your hand in front of your face like John Cena, you'll notice that your hand has a bit of motion blur. If your eyes saw at a high framerate then your hand would appear clearer and there would be no blur. So, lower framerate in film better replicates how your eye sees. In a videogame though, if the framerate gets really shitty it doesn't make the game blurry, since there's no actual light moving and being captured by a camera. A screenshot of a game running at 10 FPS looks the same as a screenshot of a game running at 100 FPS. Games will sometimes have extra options to add in image imperfections, like motion blur, to make them look more realistic and less like a fake video game thing.

If games were 30fps max starting from the very first video game, and they finally allowed 60 fps on the PS4/Xbox One, I bet people would get incredibly angry and 95% of game designers would artificially limit it to 30fps, because people don't like giving new things a chance if given a choice.

I'd also bet we'd have all movies at 60fps with no one complaining if the industry treated it like the switch to color or HD and completely backed it as the better thing, giving people the message to get used to it or get left behind. I remember occasional comments about HD being worse as well, but it didn't hold up to all the advertising telling to get you to buy the cool new HD TV and pay for the HD cable upgrade.

But there's not extra money to be made for content creators from 60fps, and maybe even extra money needed to make that content, so they sheepishly just let moviegoers try it for exactly one movie and let everyone stew on how that one movie isn't what they're used to.

There's no artificial motion blur at testufo.com but there's plenty of motion blur from my eyes being unable to keep up. Probably more so at 144hz than any of the slower framerates. In video games artificial motion blur is used more often in low framerate games precisely because the frame rate is too low and your eyes are seeing the jumps between frames and not the blur of motion. In movies, the artificial motion blur at lower frame rates gets captured in a more natural way, but that doesn't make it closer to what you would be seeing if not on camera.

I don't know what you're talking about, 144 fps is by far the clearest and the lower framerates all look more and more choppy.

I've never heard of a game using motion blur to cover up bad frame rate. I would think adding post processing effects like motion blur would use more resources and make the framerate even worse.

It's not artificial motion blur if it's captured by a real camera. Also, how is "captured in a more natural way" different from "what you would be seeing if not on camera"?

Vinny and J.B. are back! And Drew is in the house! You know what that means! I still think it's crazy that the Drew meme blew up because to me it's still just another great GB gif in a long line of those. I think another reason why the gif took off is that he's an objectively handsome dude. I wish it could've been dubbed Blinkydrew or something other than what it's called. I can think of like 9 Jeff gifs that I personally find funnier than that one but I guess the internet doesn't appreciate Jeff's gorgeous face like we do.

Here are my detailed thoughts on the frame rate discussion: Sometimes I wish Dan would hush. As usual he had no intention on being enlightened on the topic, he just wanted to make it about himself. I'm already not very fond of most email segments on GBcasts these days but this one was insufferable. Honestly why does nearly everything Dan do for this site have to involve this inane self-indulgent dross? I can't stress enough how much I don't want to be negative in comments. I'm just very put off by the way he antagonizes this staff just to feed his ego. I would complain about it more often than I do if I thought it could change anything.

What I heard is that the 24 fps filmic look is all about motion blur. There is this blur between frames that is what we associate with the filmic look. I am not 100% sure if it's in the filming process where the shutter is open longer that introduces the blur or in the projection or both, but the blurr is what people are used to with films at 24fps.

Nuggets are 100% NOT a side. There's a reason there's a numbered value meal with just nuggets and fries!!

For once Dan's right.

Dan is not right. Nuggets are not a real cut of chicken. They are, at best, a kids' menu main. Think of 99% of the restaurants you've even been to: the only thing even resembling a chicken nugget is chicken strips/chicken fingers on the kids' menu. Or perhaps you might find some sliced up chicken strips on an adult salad or something. Nonetheless, I think it's super crazy that people are so willing to call it a main. It's a side, or a kids' menu item, that McDonald's has tricked people into thinking is a main by offering 20 of them.

If McDonald's introduced a numbered value meal that was just fries and a drink, and it was like triple the quantity of existing large fries, would fries now be a main?

Whether nuggets are a side or not is completely based on count. 4 or even 6 and you can get away with it. Look at the Wendy’s Biggie Bag. It comes with a burger, nuggets, fries and a drink. No one would say that has two mains and a side of fries.

Also, how is no one else freaking out over the announcement of Film and Forties?! I’ve been waiting months for it’s return. I do love the Halloween tradition now, horror movies are perfect for drinking over and laughing at. Bummed they didn’t do a Keanu series over the summer though.

@bisonhero: Say huh? I'v been to plenty of restaurants that had chicken tenders as a meal that came with their own sides, granted I think they never intended for anyone to actually get them LMAO. And have you seen the commercials for McD's nugs, they state they are 100% real chicken and commercials never lie ;). But I stick by my story!! As far as fast food goes (McD's, Wendys, BK) nugs can easily be a main, at any nicer place id never even consider them though. Its all relative.

@thepotatoman: @fawkes:

Real film has no 'artificial' motion blur it's natural and real in how cameras. And it is what people have been used to in film, not real life. Film can of course make the effect stronger with different settings and lighting conditions, but it also is the primary reason why film looks smooth even at 24 frames per second.

Game 3D rendered at 24 fps will look like a stuttery mess for the lack of natural motion blur.

Video games fake it by usually considering where the object is moving and applying a directional blur to that direction. It will look wrong if the object is moving in an unpredictable way or stopping suddenly, but it has gotten better. It is most commonly used in 30 fps locked games to make it look like film(as in smoother). It is also not very resource intensive to add motion blur as a post processing effect, especially in the terrible way a lot of games still do it. Although at this point, with the advent of high refresh rate monitors and 60fps being more attainable, it is becoming more a stylistic choice or to emphasize impact. I personally always turn it off and instead expect my games to look sharp and at a higher frame rate.

No Caption Provided

One nice example of the difference is hand drawn 2D animation vs trying to make 3D animation/games look like 2D animation. Instead of motion blur we have actual drawn distortion like pictured left. Which serves the exact same purpose in 2D as motion blur in film(and poorly in games because the game can't know where to apply the blur before it has happened). Allowing even lower 'framerates'(less to draw) look smooth.

No Caption Provided

Guilty Gear Xrd did great work to try and make the 2D animated style look good in 3D by actually distorting the 3D models in the same way without applying any kind of motion blur. This of course is more work. Pictured left. Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse, spent a lot of effort to make this effect in a 3D movie as well.(and it looks absolutely gorgeous)

Dan is particularly exhausting in this episode. Nuggets can be a side and a main. And that was the least exhausting argument he made, just his most nitpick bullshit. Otherwise though, this episode was fantastic and I love Drew.

I like Dan too, don't get me wrong, just sometimes he just pulls all of the attention onto himself and his bizarre foibles and just seems to pick fights for fun and it is often funny, and then sometimes just tires me out.

Dan seriously have you ever stopped to think why you shout so much?

Or Alex, or Abby? In fact, Alex shouting gets so intense at times, he sounds like he is going to burst a blood vessel. The only person who I do not recall shouting is Vinny. As the old man of the group, maybe he saves that for the kids that walk on his lawn?

Dan Ryckert has been a professional heel at least since his E3 OK Cupid story. New Dan was just a charade to keep giving him attention so he can continue his lucky lifestyle.

I'm glad to hear Drew is using his talents for good. Sorry duders, but you knew he was always too handsome for Giant Bomb to stay.

I assume fastfood, toilets and the Pledge of Allegiance are the only thing all Americans have in common so that's why they are the favorite podcast subject.

Also maybe Vinny could have asked maybe one question about Drew's recent travels or biking but it's more important that we know if the mic clip had one or two antennas. It also seems like most guests are pretty quiet during e-mails but I guess there are only so many in-jokes they can respond to. Sorry but I needed to get that off my chest.

@maitom: This is most of my understanding of the 24fps thing in movies. Right settings of framrate shutter speed and all that jargon ends up making it look better when done in film, whereas games can't reproduce it because they don't have actual light rays and what not. With Ray Tracing starting to mature, I'm wondering if that makes it easier to recreate properly.

There's also something about how our eyes track motion in the real world. Your eyes don't stand still when you turn your head. Film tries to convey motion in such a way that it makes motion feel similar to Saccadic Masking where the brain doesn't perceive images well during fast eye motion.
