Dan is great when talking about the stuff he loves, he's extremely passionate and communicates it well. when Dan hates something however, he makes really big sweeping statements and won't cede any ground when someone disagrees. GOTY conversation around RDR2 was frustrating because he was way more concerned with his personal disappointment than talking about it critically or even just listening to why someone else might like it. so with Death Stranding its hard to have a flowing thoughtful conversation with someone who is like "ITS SHIT!" right out of the gate.

Ouch, this up for worst game of the year? I loved the Metal Gear Solid games but maybe Konami controlled Kojima for a good reason. Haven't heard Dan so passionate about something he hates.

Boy it sure sounds like Kojima's storytelling is sub-highschool level faux-philosophical nonsense bullshit that doesn't accomplish anything meaningful beyond plucking a few societal pressures out of a hat and waxing about them for an inordinate amount of hours relative to the actual content that's to be discovered within! Almost like his obsession with myriad gameplay systems is actually the way more interesting thing, and tells a much more fascinating and conductive story than his dog ass-ass surface-level narratives, and that his jamming in of these awful grade school fan fiction stories are actively detracting from the interesting choices he makes as a designer which embrace and subvert the expected norms of video games. Almost like his professed and projected transition to making films is going to be a nightmare for everyone involved, which will strip him of any uniqueness or agency as a creator, and will be viewed as largely a failure of substance.

Edit: Abby: "The style is bad though" yes yes thank you for just saying it! Holy shit Kojima is such a butt-ass buttass of a storyteller. He's just not good at it.

It would appear reviews are not to be trusted, many sites giving this game perfect scored or high 9's out of 10, but the game the guys described is 4 or 5 at best or what is the score you give a game that works but is just terrible.

Gotta say, the Disco Elysium discussion is pretty frustrating. I dont understand how anyone could think that game is trying to say that being woke is dumb. The game is not subtle with what it's about, and it's... not that.

I get that it's a bit edgy, but it certainly isn't cynical or grimdark, and it's also extremely funny- don't know how you could argue to the contrary.

Also, I don't exactly love that you can be racist, but you can be racist in just about every RPG to some extent, and at least here it's blatantly satirical.

Didn't want to listen to this until I finished Death Stranding. Now that I have, I just want to say the discussion here was really cathartic. Thanks.
