DLSS 2.0 talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5knHzv0IQE

It's kind of an overly verbose talk, imo. The short of it would be the slide here: https://youtu.be/d5knHzv0IQE?t=2725

Temporally jittered samples, motion vectors, and depth map provide information to a neural network that constructs an image. Basically it's temporal anti-aliasing/super-resolution with a "smarter" algorithm that filters and composites. It's much more generalized than the older DLSS 1.0 method where they were having to do deep learning training for each and every game.

Whether the next Switch is going to use the DLSS 2.0 method specifically or something else that they decide to market under the "DLSS" brand who knows. It would only stand to reason that they'll make changes to best accommodate the needs of that device. Even if Nintendo and Nvidia were to verify DLSS support it could mean almost anything.

The Reagan era Batman Jeff couldn't conjure the name for is The Dark Knight Returns - by Frank Miller which could have been tied back to the Snyder talk through 300

also, there are good Superman stories. the animated arm tends to do better movies that the live action contingent.

Hey Alex I'm in the EU over here and I'm looking at maybe getting a shot around August so as fucked up as the situation in NYC is, it's still better than our magical land of universal health care over here.

BMI gets disparaged entirely too much. It's actually a fairly accurately weight class system. The only thing that really throws it off is muscle density. But even then, you really need a lot of muscle to throw it off. Muhammad Ali in his prime was like 27 BMI. If your BMI is 27 and you don't have the body of a world class boxer, you are definitely overweight.

I think maybe the area where BMI fails is the highest end of it is really not where people think it is. 40 is the largest class, and the people we think of as our most obese people are 70-75 BMI. I've personally been at 48 and I work a physical labour outdoors job walking 5-7 miles a day. Our perspective of what is overweight and obese are so skewed when we live among so many people who are above 40 BMI.

Shooting in 4:3 is actually pretty common. The monitors used to check footage as it’s shot have 16:9 overlays to better visualize how it will look when cut down.

Aren't most movies shot in 4:3 or something close to it and then cropped? That's what happened with Justice League I think. If the movie had been released in non-Imax theaters, it would have been cropped to 1.85, that was the plan. But since Snyder was allowed to make his version without any compromises, he decided to go with the unaltered 4:3 ratio, which he preferred. So you actually do see more of the picture, and it's not about saving money at all, more like the reverse, lol. And in terms of black bars, I believe there are less of them than if it was at the 2:35 ratio, which is fairly common. So I'm kinda surprised why it's such a big deal for people.

Regarding Superman, I would argue that he is the superhero character with the biggest number of classic stories to his name after Batman. Great writers like Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore and Grant Morrison have done some incredible work with the character, but Moore's edgelord stories with Batman (which he himself dislikes) tend to get more attention than his great Superman stories. A lot of people seem to really dislike the very concept of Superman without having ever engaged with any of the comics, which is kinda weird, but oh well. I guess DC is partially to blame with their poor handling of the character in other mediums, although I personally do enjoy the movies quite a bit.

Anyway, this was my "um, actually" moment, lol. I hope it wasn't too annoying to read!

@kabhukiman: interesting insight on both accounts. Is the 4:3 thing correct, tho? That would mean older SD movies that we typically see HD widescreen re-releases of - where we now see more of the sides of the shot than we’re meant to - are originally shot in a high resolution 4:3, and get cropped down to 16:9 for HD. Or in other words vhs tapes were giving us a 4:3 that was essentially zoomed in a bunch for no good reason.

I wasn’t a film major so I’m not sure myself. Seems off.

This seems as good a place as any to talk about aspect ratios.

Movies are often shot in an open matte ratio of either 1.33:1 (aka 4:3) or 1.37:1 (aka the Academy Ratio). From this 1.33/1.37 base, the movies are either kept as is or, more often, cropped to 1.66, 1.78 (aka 16:9), 1.85, 2:1, or even 2.39 (popularly known as anamorphic or 'Scope). Movies used to only be in 1.37:1, but the widescreen revolution of the 1950s gave us CinemaScope (2.55:1/2.35:1). CinemaScope used traditional anamorphic processes to get the wider ratio that today is known as 2.39.

IMAX 65mm (that is, real deal IMAX) is 1.43:1 (very close to a square). Digital IMAX is actually 1.90:1 (James Gunn The Suicide Squad will be presented this way due to being shot on IMAX digital, and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame were both shot and presented this way in IMAX but not home video).

Zack Snyder's Justice League was shot using the Super 35 process, which uses all the space available on a 35mm film stock for higher quality imagery than traditional 35mm filming. This means the full frame being shot is around 1.33 (or possibly 1.37). When the theatrical cut came out, it was appropriately cropped to 1.85:1, because the two most common ratios used in cinema today are 1.85 and 2.39. Since Snyder was given full creative control, he decided to present the film in its full open matte frame ratio, which is 1.33:1/4:3. Inspired by IMAX, the idea is to emulate that experience, which would come to full fruition if the film is presented on an actual IMAX screen (or any huge screen, really). Could he have just cropped it to 16:9? Absolutely, but he didn't, so here we are.

@development you're referring to old TV shows that were shot on 35mm film for the purposes of 1.33:1 televisions. When going HD, these shows could be remastered to crop the tops and bottoms but show more information on the sides. It's not perfect, but it is extremely doable, as it has been used for The X-Files, The Wire, Seinfeld, and others, all without losing image quality.

@humanity: Ohio here. It's open to everyone on Monday (aka all under 40) and people under 40 have already been getting it this week fairly easily towards the end of the day if there are no shows or cancelations. My wife got it today and I'm scheduled next week. For all those who want to call the rollout a "failure" in the US, seems like quite a few people are getting the thing that only like the entire population of the world needs two of less than a year since this thing got real. I'd call that pretty damn impressive logistics. Still easier to get a shot than finding a XSX or PS5...

@larmer: I would also say that height throws it off big time. I'm 6'6". According to most metrics, to get a "healthy bmi" I would have to weigh about 190 lbs. My best friend is also my height, and he's BONE skinny at 210.

But whatever, I live in Japan and whenever Japan does get off their asses and start vaccinating people, I'll be able to get mine earlier so score.

Jeff's reaction to "I don't qualify" was just wonderful.

I realized BMI was dumb a few years back. I used to be average for awhile, which is when I was super slim with no muscle or anything. Now I'm in much better shape overall, but I'm technically slightly overweight. Which worried me for a bit until I realized I feel great and look "healthy" so ah well.

Late to the party but sure, I'll share my counter opinion Re:Superman.

To me, the viewpoints the GB guys expressed was based on like the dirt worst version of superman. To put it in a way people might understand, it would be like asking the opinion of someone about Batman, who had only ever seen the 60s show, and was very much not a fan of such. I can't really blame them, we have not got a good movie about superman in forever, and while I think it holds up and was quite good, the superman animated series that ran on tv back in the day was in the same time-frame the the original batman animated series, and was the worse of the two (so way less fondly remembered/recalled).

The thing is, everything they describe about why Superman is boring and bad and bland is true, but its also a symptom of bad writing/storytelling, not the inherent character. We have seen way WAY to many examples of great superman stories that would make for really interesting/good movies (or could, anyhow in the right hands) that practically no one who isn't reading those comics/following people who talk about them are aware of. We do, at least, have a few of those made into DC Animated movies.

Like, I encourage anyone go to watch the All Star Superman movie or Superman vs the Elite. Maybe you won't like Superman anymore then you do now afterwards, his character has been so pigeon holed into one specific bland version for so long that some people can never look past it. But I would also bet a lot of people could at least get a much better understanding of why some of us thing Superman is a great character, but lament at his terrible movie presentation.

To wit, its as if every major hollywood producer/exec/writer had only ever seen the 60s batman movie, and was absolutely convinced that was the only kind of batman story/character that could exist. Imagine a world where you know Batman can be way more interested/presented in an entirely different way that might be wildly popular if only people knew about it/competent people made the media using that version, but all of society and the people who get to make the creative decisions were all-in on "nope, its 60s era batman or nothing." Add on top of that the few people who -do- seem to know how to make a decent superman story, not also being able to make a decent action movie (Superman returns was way closer to what some of us know superman can be, but Superman vs a big rock is not a good movie plot). Or you know, see the original Superman, or compare the director's cut of superman 2 to the theatrical. That last one is by far the best example of "What Superman can be vs what most everyone is convinced is the only thing he can be."

I liked Superman from the from his animated appearances (Fleischer, Ruby-Spears and the animated series) as well as the Donner film but I never connected to him like I did with the latest DC films. It made Superman interesting to me. They gave him real human vulnerability and flaws. He's uncertain of who he is and what his role in society should be and the world is uncertain how to feel about him.

The heroes of these films are the outcasts and alienated, it's most apparent with Justice League. Great trilogy of films, in my opinion.

I'm not all too versed in comics, but i do think by now i would be more interested in seeing a Superman movie than a Batman or Spiderman movie. Superman's suit and general background story is pretty much the pinnacle of Superhero dudes and there are far too many people out there that say that there's some good Superman stuff out there. But all i've known for the last decades is Superman stuff being bad. It would be cool if something really good came out and was able to change some heads & minds around that character and world, especially in this current era of superhero movies being fired off left and right.

Alex saying "I keep my friends list pretty tight" is funny in the light of his final drum stream, where he was spammed with friend requests. It's almost like he's never going to add you and you just did it for attention.
