I also live in Australia, the idea of paying $125for a game is absolutely absurd.I wasn’t lucky enough to get a ps5 but I have a pc that’s significantly more powerful. So I’ve been getting keys for new games roughly around $60-70 ($40-50 USD). Our internet though, oh boy. I’ve seen giant bomb videos where they can download a 60gb in 5 minutes. That would take me 3-4 hours minimum :( also there will be no ps5 stock in the next two years. Covid sucks

The whole price debate is ridiculous. Game prices have been stagnating for ever. We need to move on.

Sometimes I wish the pre-show could be included, maybe as a clip or something. The call center bit during the pre-show for this one was pretty good.

I've always been partial to Placebo's version of "Running Up That Hill" and "Feeling Good" by Muse.

Saw a hockey match as a child and had no idea what was going on.

As an adult I actually enjoy seeing games because the speed creates a lot of chaotic situations unlike other sports. Goon is a good movie in an absurd way.

As a european I would say I struggle to muster any arguments for a flat Value-Added Tax especially when there isn't a corresponding Tobin tax for speculative financial transactions. Plus it's a legitimate pain in managing every single official trade for currency you make especially internationally.

2 things:

  1. If I found out my old man said 'cunt' on the internet, I'd respect him so much more
  2. Yeah, paying for games and games stuff in Australia is horseshit. Shipping for band merch etc. online is pretty awful as well

@strijd: The variables that dictate decent internet here are ridiculous. I'm lucky enough to be able to essentially get gigabit where I live, but I built a house in a new estate that got FTTP and I also pay $150 a month for it. The extent to which the NBN construction/rollout was fucked is something of a tragedy, relatively speaking...

I think Any Given Sunday was a great football film in many ways. But I think the best football film was The Program where James Caan played a corrupt college football coach who knowingly let his players use steroids among other things to win football games.

And the ONLY good hockey movie was one the game Blades of Steel was based on, Youngblood. The one about the player getting bullied and him beating his bully in the end. Starring an up and coming Rob Lowe.

The RE discussion about a subtitle for IX was pretty funny considering Capcom has cheated on the last couple anyway. VII is part of “EVIL” in the previous game, and VIII is part of “VILLAGE” this time, so just call your game whatever and force the number in there. :P

best football movie, either The Last Boyscout or M.A.S.H.

I'll also cast my vote for Youngblood in the Hockey category which had Swayze and Keaunu Reeves in it. Cynthia Witt helped too. :P

ahh to have tea with Mrs McGill.

other football movies deserving mention: School Ties, the original Flubber, Little Giants, Ace Ventura, and the only "real" football movie on this list, Victory :P

@strijd: Blame your govt. People also seem to forget about currency exchange rates and the differences between sales tax and Value Added Tax (VAT). My understanding is that Australia charges 10% VAT that is already included in the price. Let's use Returnal as an example. I searched a few sites and saw it being listed for AUD 106. Which would be AUD 96.36 if you take out the taxes (10% VAT from what I could find). Now average exchange rate between USD and AUD was 1.452 last year. Guess what, convert your price to USD and the game is actually USD 66.37, cheaper than in America...This is what I was able to surmise researching australia tax law, so please let me know if I'm wrong here.

@dawgs4life: yep I call it the “get fucked Australia tax” haha you should see what we have to pay for computer parts. Some places like jbhifi (Best Buy in NA) will sell the disc copy for $110. I moved away from buying physical discs when the ps4 came out. As it stands returnal is $125 now on the psn store. Luckily steam hasn’t yet implemented the price hike. New releases are still $90-$100

@alex I recommend just going through all the Nier endings, it's not as tedious as you might be thinking. At the very least, an "A" and "B" playthroughs should 100% be done. For C&D, spoiler tags just in case someone doesn't want to know: whilst you do need to get every weapon (as you likely already know), only a few are obtained via sidequests. You can easily look up something that tells you which sidequests have a weapon as a reward (and which are worth it for the small stories) whilst skipping the rest. All the other weapons you'd just need to buy which isn't to hard to do. Also, C&D are just endings, meaning nothing changes from playthrough B. Skipping all the cutscenes and stuff you'll fly through it extremely fast and the only thing you'd need to do is save at the last save point, get ending C, reload and get ending D making it an even shorter process. I have no knowledge of E in terms of how you get it/how you do it, I only know what's in it as I know what it adapts but it seems like a significant enough thing that it'd be worth doing too. So in short: you could just youtube those, but it's really easy/quick to do them and it's not quite like how Automata is set up. I'm also of the opinion it's better to experience it yourself than through a video, but obviously that's just me and play it however you want. Just thought you might want to know to help ya decide on how you'll go about it.

Them talking about how the rest of the world uses 24 hour clocks (military time) is the most stereotypical American conversation ever lol We don't say 'zero o'clock' or '13 o'clock' haha.

Being a MN sports fan I have zero sympathy for Jeff's small child not getting championships. The Twins won when I was too young to care and we've had nothing in any sport since.

@dawgs4life: Not sure how the maths works out for you, by my calculations Returnal from JB Hifi comes out to about $8 more than a copy from Gamestop. We'll ignore the PSN Store because retail routinely offers better prices despite providing a physical product (?).

Honestly not a huge difference, though. We get it way worse in many other product categories. PC parts and alcohol (huge excise on non-wine alcohols), to name a couple.

I'm not an economist, but people smarter than me have put up essays/articles about games making more money than ever despite prices staying more or less the same due to factors like a wider audience, microtransactions, and DLC. Personally, the price of individual games isn't a problem, though. I can always wait for sales. The thing keeping me out of the market now is hardware prices, though that's primarily in the PC space and due to a whole lot of factors.

@calumb90: Y'all don't but go to Japan. As an English teacher here, I often have to correct "13 o'clock."

Also, if you live in a country that uses analog clocks and watches, then you still use a 12 hour clock at least some of the time.

Listening to this months later, and it's so weird that there is just zero indication or hint that something was about to happen. The news that they were leaving hit 5 days after this was recorded, but everything seems normal in this...

It sounded like Alex was saying Save Harris instead of Ferris, lol.
