@hassun: Well, if it's an episode about episodes, why not call it episode episode...? I'm very much hoping for the Chromecast episode, to finally know what was going on with that...

Using the RSS over here. Pleasantly surprised to see ep 2. Another good chat about the site and how things are in motion.

@mathematics: people didn't like that one when it was published either. change is hard, but this new site has some fantastic ideas and makes more sense than the last one.

I take it that this is being seen as a bit of a rolling launch so will give the benefit of the doubt in terms of some of my niggles with the new site. I understand the desire to not paint yourselves into corners by being asked to self justify, but I would like to hear more about the methodologies being implemented in the new design. For instance, the new focus on shows does feel a little arbitrary at the moment, but then again I've personally never consumed GB content in that way as I usually only care about the latest published videos, or content accessed directly via the wiki or search. I wonder if you have user data that shows people watching complete series of videos that has led the design down this road, or if the shows/series metaphor is more aspirational in nature. I'd also like to hear more about the thinking that led to the design of the homepage and watchlist and how you see them developing in the future.

I would love if the carousel sorted newest to the left, similar to the grid layout sorting (newest is on the left to right). Or at least have an option to sort newest/oldest first.

I wanted to thank Dan, Will, and all future guests for doing these. I'm not a designer or programmer but I really appreciate hearing people talk in detail about how and why things were done, and think this podcast in particular has shed some light on some usability/navigation issues I had and has helped me adapt.

Dan also mentioned, if I understood correctly, that the individual video page layout wasn't "complete," and I want to echo something I've said elsewhere and seen others mention, and that's that losing the links to a game's wiki page and forum has really made site navigation different. I hope these among the things Dan said were looking at being reintroduced (and sorry again if I misinterpreted what was said around that), because losing those really makes this feel more like "a website about video game videos" than "A website about video games" with a heavy focus on video content.

So I'm wondering if this stuff is broken or if it's designed to look like this. Because this looks like a bunch of busted tables. The big useless scrollbar is really the main thing giving me that vibe, but the rest of the elements on the thumbnail just seem super discordant.

Also a LOT of the thumbnails on the site are so dark I'm not even sure what the point is in having them. They don't come off as readable. It's not as much a problem for something like this or GRIPS, but both benefit from taking their thumbnails from something using more vibrant colors. Stuff like Goosebumps, Quiet Man, and Tetris Effect are way too dark though.

Again, I genuinely can't tell if this is broken or by design. But either way it just looks rough.

I noticed that the reviews page only goes to 2015. I don't know if that's a bug or not but I thought you should know

@mathematics: people didn't like that one when it was published either. change is hard, but this new site has some fantastic ideas and makes more sense than the last one.

I always wonder how designers deal with this and actually get useful feedback. I assume redesigns are usually aimed at making things more accessible for new users based on current design standards? Because I feel like long-time users always hate redesigns of pretty much anything.

Anecdotally, I basically hate every redesign of a site or application I frequently use, because I usually know how to do most of the actions I want to do, and shuffling everything around and adding/removing features I may or may not care about is usually an annoyance. I can only think of 1 or 2 times where maybe some aspect of the site/app was so horrendous before that the new menu/UI design is a dramatic improvement. All other times, as a user, I've never felt like the old design was failing me in any way, and I don't see how the new design is some huge improvement for my own purposes. I assume in any given redesign, they're optimizing some code "under the hood", but all the layout/UI rearrangement that I notice as a user usually seems like a lateral shift to me and not something I would ever call an objective improvement. If I would ever be polled for my reaction to a redesign, my feedback would be generally negative every single time a redesign happens.

Very interesting listen! Thank you Will, Dan, and Chris. Just a general question that maybe you guys can help answer. I'm currently a post-bacc student about to finish a Comp Sci degree this coming spring and I've just recently got into web and webapp development. I'm currently learning Django and Bootstrap because I really enjoy coding in Python and want to build some personal projects for my portfolio. It's been a very fun experience so far and I'm eager to learn more but currently I feel very paralyzed with choice. There are just so many different frameworks and tools that I could start learning that I don't even know where to begin. I was wondering if you guys have ever experienced this and if you had any suggestions for new things to consider looking into. Thanks again, I've really enjoyed the podcast so far.

@visualizer: As somebody who was in your shoes a few years ago, my personal advice is to just make an educated guess and build something. You'll learn far more while you are making something :)

You'll probably end up using various frameworks in your career, but the most important lessons you learn along the way seem to be the ones that apply to development as a whole.

Avoid the temptation to fall into "analysis paralysis"!

@unknownbeef: Thanks for the advice! This winter break I definitely want to look into Materialize and a JS framework like Vue or React. I feel like a bit of a late bloomer considering I'm graduating next semester, but it's it's been reinvigorating to have something I feel passionate and inspired to learn more about. :)

@visualizer: When you do look into them, Angular 2+ is very React like. There are some things that are easier in Angular (like routing) vs React. Anyway cheers!
