Film & 40s: Event Horizon

Mike Mahardy fills in for Abby this week as we take a leisurely jaunt out to Neptune to see what all the fussin' and the screamin' and the eye-clawin' is about over on the old Event Horizon.

An audio accompaniment to your movie viewing pleasure with your friends at Giant Bomb.

Oct. 18 2019

Cast: Vinny, Alex, Dan, Mike

Posted by: Alex

Episode Notes:

This podcast is an audio supplement, meant to be played simultaneously with the film Event Horizon. We are watching the film via a US Blu-ray release. Streaming and rental options can be found here.

Disappointed Abby wasn't here for this recording.

Her... frank... reactions to horror is very amusing.

Edit: Commentary was great! But did the guys seem particularly intoxicated by the end?

"Do you see? Do you SEE?" is one of those lines in my bank of movie quotes I'll often slip into when I simply want to say the phrase. ("What's in the box?" is another favorite along those lines)

Edit: I also just noticed the "In this episode" tags. :chef kiss:

And for those who love Warhammer40k this is considered the closest movie to approaching the 40k type of universe (with a drive travelling the warp, chaos possessing ships, etc)

"Here I come, motherfucker!"

Yup, this was still some good cheesy fun and looks pretty okay in HD too. Some good quotes to grab from Dan in this one too.

Very glad about the Amazon Prime version syncing up perfectly with this, shame they don't have The Exorcist up as well.

Excited (I think?) to finally see this movie for the first time. A little sad Abby's out for this one in particular, but I'll never say no to more Mike content. Can't wait to check this out later this evening!

With the distance between their studios, I can't imagine that's easy to arrange. I would like GBWest doing their own F&40s at times too though, or a mega one recorded during GOTY where you can't even really focus on anyone with the whole GB crew talking over each other. A glorious mess.

I've been putting off watching this movie for years because it looked to scary/gory, but maybe having drunk idiots talk over it will help me get through it.

I've never really been big into horror but this is probably in my top 3. Haven't listened yet but is there any of the crew who haven't seen it before? I was looking forward to Abby being on to hear some reactions from a first time viewer.

Kinda want the whole GBE crew (give or take a bonus Mahardy) to play the Viscera Cleanup Detail level specifically based on the Event Horizon ship. They did complain about all the mess dripping from the walls, after all.

It's really not very good at all. Very telling that this is maybe Paul WS Anderson's best movie, and yet its still goofy, ultra derivative, the production design is dated as hell music video BS, and full of cheap jump scares. It coasts by on the strength of its cast and its premise, but it feels like you could make a much, much better movie out of these ingredients.

First time time I saw this, and then main thing I have to say is that I guess it's a movie of its time.
Nothing really disturbed me at all, even though I can agree on there are some very disturbing imagery.
I guess if I'd been growing up believing in religion this maybe would have affected me more?
But as a 32 year old, who started questioning religion at the age of six and never believed in it, none of this really bothered me.

Another factor is definitely that a lot of more disturbing and fucked up imagery exists nowadays, easy to access anywhere, anytime.

I don't think I would have kept watching to the end if it wasn't for the commentary.
I'd give Even Horizon a 2/5.

The reason for why Jeff went to New York in the first place was because of a Nintendo Switch event. He was guesting on the Beastcast that same week.
And since they probably knew about that event for some time, they were able to plan when to start watching that series to time it so Jeff could sit in on one of his favorite Fast & Furious movie.

You would think after the 185th occasion in a row where the GB crew sees an actor in a movie but don't know what other stuff the actor is in, they would do some research beforehand. :p

(I mean this comment in jest, I'm not being serious.)

Strange question... I'm watching this on a streaming service the movie plays fine, smooth, never hitches, and same as I always remember it (from the far too many times I've watched it) but every time I sync it back up I see to be way ahead of the guys within about 2 mins. Is it at all possible it's playing at different speeds for us?

Was this the first film in which they did the Body murder art like Hannibal and Midsommar?

I'm also a big fan of dirty, greecy spaceship interiors, the whole look of it was fantastic. Indeed screamed very Warhammer to me, especially with the latin, the religious tones and the talk about alternate chaos dimensions also known as the Warp.
