Film & 40s: Film & 40s: Rocky IV

Dan and Drew provide a beer-fueled commentary track for a movie that not only single-handedly ended the Cold War, but also features cake-serving robots, giant golden bull heads, and some of the greatest montages ever committed to celluloid. Ding, ding!

An audio accompaniment to your movie viewing pleasure with your friends at Giant Bomb.

As far as syncing up the movie with the audio. Rifftrax and other similar commentary tracks have gone with describing a logo that will appear before the movie starts (but is part of the film itself not the dvd authoring logo etc), tell everyone to pause the track 1,2,3 NOW then start it as soon as that logo (for example Paramount logo) appears.

This works the best because people can have different copies of the film, for example with Rocky IV I don't own it and rented it from amazon video, and the film logos are always the same in each version.

edit: similar to what you guys did, but the opposite strategy where you start the commentary audio when the logo appears.

Excited for this :D.

For folks wanting to get stuck right into the movie 13:38 is the sync point in the podcast at the first frame of the MGM lion.

THERE'S NO EASY WAY OUT

THERE'S NO SHORTCUT HOOOOOME!

Dan is right about that montage being among the best 4 minutes of film ever. Basically everything good about these types of movies distilled into perfection.

this reminds me of time when i went to see phantom menace in 3D with mr plinkett commentary made the film almost acceptable which is a miracle because that film is atrocious. and remember when Dan said that phantom menace was better then all lotr films. Dan i take your film opinions with pinch of salt but did enjoy commentary.

i would love see Jeff do one for fast and furious films or The Substitute

Rorie and Jeff doing the Substitute would be great.

Also is a 40s 'just' half a liter of beer? Well that's... somewhat anticlimatic. Don't know why, but I always imagined them being a hell of a lot bigger than that, since Americans are always talking them up as if they were something completely insane.

Considering @drewbert has said he's never seen any Rocky movies, it's kind of an injustice to start with Rocky IV. At least make him watch them in order, @danryckert

That is a great thumbnail.

Rocky IV achieves exactly what it wants to achieve, making it one of the most gloriously dumb movies ever.

I stayed up way too late drinking a 40 when I have work early tomorrow just to watch this. And now I want to go for a 8 mile run, do a hundred push ups and crunches. Not a good combo. Jeez, I had always seen the beginning to that movie but that was well worth it. Thanks Drew and Dan. More please.

After the amount of movie talk Dan has brought to GiantBomb I was hoping he would do something like this. I really enjoyed it and got it to sync easily. Is The Hunt for Red October next?

To be honest I'd much prefer an actual podcast discussing the movie(s) to a commentary track.

I'd sell my soul for some kind of T2 commentary. Even if it is just Drew and Dan quoting the entire movie by heart.

Well that is quite the undertaking at least if the beer is strong.

US mainstream domestic beer is typically kind of weak, like 5-6% ABV, unless you're talking about specialty stuff (which I'm sure they're not consuming), which can reach up to 9%. Most I've seen is 11% and that's the really expensive stuff. For experienced drinkers, 1.18 liters of a 5-6% ABV beverage is not much at all.

The absolute best beer I've been able to find in the states is a Trappist ale, Rochefort no.10. It's 11.9% ABV, though it doesn't taste like it, but is also around $5-6 a bottle. It's worth every penny in my opinion.

@civid: 40 ounces is no easy task.

@cooljammer00 he said he saw the first one.

Anyway, I have never actually seen a full Rocky movie until tonight so that's kind of an odd way to start with commentary from two guys from a video game site but whatevs.

My big problem with the 40s is that I imagine it would get warm before you're done with it, unless you chug it or something. It just doesn't seem practical. I much prefer 0.33 or 0.5 l of beer.

So I just finished watching this and loved it. I had seen Rocky IV before, but it had been a while, and even then probably not start to finish with no interruptions in a decade or so. I found it incredibly easy to sync the podcast up with my copy, and it was like being in the room with Dan and Drew while they watched it. A super-fun experience, I'd love to see more of these!

Also Rocky IV holds up surprisingly well given the sort of quasi-jingoistic bent it has, but like Dan says in the commentary it really does manage to stay true to the characters in the franchise. It's kind of ironic in retrospect, the movie plays like a victory lap after winning the Cold War, except that America wouldn't know they'd won until about 6 years after this came out.
