Film & 40s

Film & 40s: Film & 40s: Con Air

Of the films in the Nicolas Cage action movie holy trinity, we can safely say that Con Air is the one that most deserves to be excommunicated. But we still got hammered and watched it anyway.

An audio accompaniment to your movie viewing pleasure with your friends at Giant Bomb.

Episode Notes:

This podcast is an audio supplement, meant to be played simultaneously with the "film" Con Air. We are watching the film via a US DVD release. Streaming and rental options can be found here.

Our commentary begins at the film's 5 second mark. It's right after the lightning bolt strikes the Touchstone Pictures logo.

I love the commentary so much and this was a bad movie. Amazing, but bad.

It's all very well rubbing Dan's face in the fact that he won't be here for The Rock but how about thinking of your audience and saving the movie for when he can be there?

Weird scheduling.

Completely agree. I think pretty much everyone (or maybe just me) would rather wait for Dan to be back.

I like this feature, but I think 5 hosts is maybe too many. There were times where there were three hosts talking at once as well as the movie and it just turned into noise.

As one of the few hosts that hadn't seen the film I appreciated Abby's commentary the most. Honestly the more people who are watching for the first time, the better. Part of the reason I think the noise level in this film were so frustrating was because most of the hosts knew what was about to happen and didn't feel the need to really pay attention.

Alex, my dude, I love you but you gotta keep those spoilers under control :P

@smackchopg: I agree wholeheartedly. I always get excited to for this feature a majority of the time until it gets like 30 mins in. 5 People on this is way too much. I'm in the same boat for Alex and Dan who generally love this movies and are trying to enjoy it the most.

As other people have said, it was pretty clear that 20 minutes in the crew just didn't really pat attention to the movie any more and started to talk about whatever else came to mind instead of whatever was happening on screen. Then they try to pay attention and it's becomes lot questions starting with how or why..

These are usually great, but if you don't focus on the movie things just kinda decent into chaos with people talking over each other.

The moments where someone had to explain a 90s reference to Abby were transcendentally amazing. I'm kinda drunk right now and I have to get up at 3am to go to work tomorrow, but I think I have to just watch your Rock commentary right now.

Too many people. Too much like a podcast, not enough about what's on screen. Frustrating when half of the commentary is Alex explaining plot points that someone wasn't paying attention to. I love film and 40s but this was disappointing.

But seriously, what's up with Alex and spoilers? Has he watched movies together with human beings before in his life? Does he know that people usually don't appreciate being told what's going to happen when watching a movie? It's so strange.

The crew talked a lot about how bad this film is, but honestly as a dumb fun action movie I had a great time watching. Moreso than Face Off which I found a bit jarring tonally at points.

Man the only Nick Cage F&40s I've listened to are this one and National Treasure but idk if I enjoy listening to these anymore. I think for me the mix of too many people on these podcasts, and the amount of times they get confused by things in the plot that are clearly explained but just talked over by them has made these hard to listen to. Also maybe its just me but just shitting on a dumb movie like this isn't really fun to listen to, like everyone trying to break down bad plot points in a dumb silly movie like this doesn't really add anything to me...

Edit: I will say though having Jeff Bakalar on this episode was absolutely FANTASTIC!!

Most of these commentaries are just, "Hey, what movie was this guy in besides this?" and people trying to think about those movies.

Watching with F&40s is my first time seeing both Face Off and Con Air. Con Air was absolutely a better watch than Face Off. Con Air was also better than National Treasure (Which I had seen before, but was not nearly as good as I remembered).

I love you guys but seriously, the constant crosstalk and shouting made this hard to enjoy. Was good but could have been great. Still love you all though!

Con Air is amazing. Prefer it over The Rock and way, WAY better than Face/Off. And put some respect on Simon West's name: He also made the excellent, underrated The Mechanic.

Why do people go through the hassle of sincing these podcasts over a movie and then complain about the crew talking over the movie.

I forgot how shit this film was. Jerry Bruckheimer is an awful director. That said I also think The Rock is a god damn awful film. I've never quite understood the obsession with that film. Con Air is better than The Rock.
