Premium Podcasts: Film & 40s: Jason X

Oct. 26th 2018

In the first installment of our Vinny Caravella double feature, we take to the stars and watch a bunch of space-faring future teens run smack-dab into an ancient, technologically enhanced murder man.

Episode Notes:

This podcast is an audio supplement, meant to be played simultaneously with the film Jason X. We are watching the film via a US DVD release. Streaming and rental options can be found here.

Our commentary begins at the film's 14 second mark, right as the New Line Cinema logo has faded up.

$3.99 to rent on Amazon. Done.

This is a terrifically stupid movie. Glad they're watching it.

This is my absolute favorite TERRIBLE movie. It's so fucking bad, but I love watching it with friends. It's so awful, I'm gonna watch it right now.

Seriously, people. This movie is Dracula 3000 levels of trash. I love it.

ShaggE •

Excited for this one.

glots •

*Also* watching The Thing next week? Awesome! Really excited for this too, obviously.

GValo •

Yes Alex, Cronenberg is in this film!

Undeadpool •

The right choice was made.

This movie is SO dumb and SO good.

Have you checked out Freddy VS Jason? I think it might dethrone this masterpiece of schlock.

janman  Staff •

Yo I think this was the first film in the Friday the 13th franchise I ever saw.

notJigsaw •

I loved this dumb terrible movie so much when I was younger, along with Freddy vs Jason. I found my dusty old DVD copy of it but it looks like it’s streaming on the Starz app so I’m going to watch it there.

Humanity •

Jason... gets an upgrade!

I have never seen a Jason movie, so here we go I guess

Awwwh; I was really banking on "The Thing". One of my very favourite movies of all time.

But hey, this will be a bunch of fun as well. Probably better suited for Film & 40s than the MUCH, MUCH creepier Thing.

Woooof, what an introduction to this franchise. I hope you went back and watched the first few and learned what that series is truly capable of.

@do_the_manta_ray: Good news, we're still gonna do THE THING! It'll go up on Halloween next week.

Mathey •

@alex: woooo!

"You've got to be fucking kidding me."

Rieb20 •

“Nobody loves videodrome”?!?!?? Vinny have you gone mad!!!

hassun •

Is this the one with the freezing and the sink?

CornBREDX •

Good choice- this movie is mad dumb.

I don't know if ya'll know this (I haven't listened yet), but the people who made this had never seen any of the Friday the 13th movies before.

Fun fact. The writer of this movie is also the writer of Drive Angry and is killed on screen in both films.

Kinda disappointing how tame all the other kills were after that.

That was a really dumb movie and great commentary! Glad that it got picked, though I'm also super stoked for The Thing. Also ofcourse Freddy vs Jason ignores this movie, this happens in 2455. C'mon now, give the movie makers least some credit!

Also also, speaking of Freddy vs Jason, that movie is great shlock, better than this even. In my dream scenario they'd watch through all of the Elm Street movies next year, but I'd settle just for Freddy vs Jason as well.

janman  Staff •

@tanookisuit: I eventually did! It's insane to see the tonal differences between the first and then this.

janman  Staff •

@notjigsaw: It probably didn't help that I saw the censored TV version on the SciFi channel

@undeadpool:Yeah, I've seen that. I don't like Nightmare on Elm St. past the first movie and Dream Warriors and I don't think he adds much to the mix. It's still fun, but there's something very special about how tragically bad Jason X is, for me.

Jason X is just pure dumb fun, same goes for Freddy Vs. Jason. Both movies know they are insane which i appreciate. I just re watched most of the Friday 13th and Elm Street movies, and almost none of them hold up. Honestly most of them are terrible.

Undeadpool •

Vinny talking about this is the same way I would describe my viewing of "See No Evil" the Mayor Glenn "Kane" Jacobs classic. We were commenting on it, other people were shouting at the screen. He burst through a wall and a friend of mine shouted "STARS!!!!" getting easily the biggest laugh from a shockingly nerdy crowd.

I definitely think they're very different movies, but I do like the weird effort they put into making Freddy and Jason crossover actually making SOME narrative sense. And the 25 minute fight at the end kind of rules.

jjgoertz •

It appears that the only Blu-ray I can find for Jason X is a used one from Brazil.

On the plus side, I bet wrong and bought The Thing, so I'm set for next week.

It's probably just me, but it would be easier if the sync point was when a logo disappears, instead of when it comes up.

Undeadpool •

If you're wondering about the tone of the latter-day Friday the 13th movies, just listen to this. Yes, it was written for the 6th movie, but it's got the right tone for any Jason movie past, let's say, 4.

Just when I thought I couldn't like you any more. You rascal, you.

Imma' take the opportunity and introduce said film to my girlfriend and her family. The lot of 'em hail from China, and they're not particularly knowledgeable in terms of western culture, films; you name it..

Imma' have me some fun with this here Holiday.

Doomvape •

Kane Hodder is the best Jason! Fucking love that guy.

asherrd •

You should change the description saying when to start the film at from "New Line Cinema logo has faded up" to "faded away" or "faded out."

Although, on the audio you give clear instructions so it's not a big deal.

stryk9 •

this is honestly one of my favorites in the friday the 13th series, along with vs freddy. this movie gets so much shit, but at this point the series has gotten stale and ran out of ideas that this feels like a complete breath of fresh air (or lack of it, since you know, space). absolutely love it, and man oh man, that frozen face smash kill is probably one of the best in the series.

ShaggE •

After listening to this, I *really* hope you guys do Freddy vs. Jason next year. Hell, don't even wait until next year, since it's barely a horror movie anyway.

Actually, I just like the idea of you guys picking the weird entries in horror franchises without context. Leprechaun In The Hood, Freddy's Dead, Halloween 3, Seed of Chucky... and with Alex's very fuzzy memory misleading him, Jason Goes To Hell is a must. It's even weirder than he remembered.

“The Windows is mighty”

mattchops •

This movie is beyond ridiculous

Humboldt •

You should see the Fly Dan. It's very good.

Humboldt •

Assuming they are doing the only Thing that anyone cares about so 1982.

I'm more partial to the Toy Dan, but I can see where someone would think the Fly Dan is very good.

sambair •

Say what you want about Jason X, but it's basically Citizen Kane compared to Leprechaun in Space.

Infobrains •

As someone who has only been into very limited horror movies,I'm loving this series. This was hilariously bad in all the best ways.

Tanstaafl •

Anyone know what book series Vinny was talking about around 12 or 13 minutes in?

@billmcneal: pretty sure they mean 1982; the 2011 was a prequel; the 1951 is ... actually, I don't know what it's like. Other than what appeared in John Carpenter's Halloween.

Also fun little video game connection, I think the guy playing the sergeant was in the first Dead Space game. Playing a captain, I think? So bit of a promotion for him.

BoringK •

The director, Jim Isaac, had done effects work on THE FLY, NAKED LUNCH, and EXISTENZ, and Cronenberg was sort of a mentor to him, so that's why he's in this. Isaac directed a few other movies, but unfortunately passed away in 2012.

(Robert A. Silverman, the sleepy man on the videophone, was also a frequent Cronenberg collaborator. Basically this movie is Canadian as fuck)
