Film & 40s: Film & 40s: Vampire's Kiss

Trying to explain what the hell Nicolas Cage is doing in Vampire's Kiss is a fool's errand, so instead, let's just get hammered and let the insanity wash over us.

An audio accompaniment to your movie viewing pleasure with your friends at Giant Bomb.

Posted by: Alex

In This Episode:

Nicolas Cage

Vampire

Episode Notes:

This podcast is an audio supplement, meant to be played simultaneously with the film Vampire's Kiss. We are watching the film via a US DVD release. Streaming and rental options can be found here.

Our commentary begins at the film's 9 second mark. It's a black screen right before the producer's names first fade up.

I know absolutely nothing about this movie, so this should be fun.

I had to sign up for Vudu to stream this movie, it is ridiculous that this classic film isn't on every streaming site.

I haven't seen this one before and won't have time to do a pre-watch so, this Film & 40's will be a first time viewing for me which is not how I ever watch a film for the first time.

I've never actually listened to a Film & 40s since I'm not really into the movies they cover, but Vampire's Kiss is a goddamn piece of art and I am here for it.

(I meant to listen to the They Live episode, but forgot until now... also excited for that one)

As a Scottish person it is oddly comforting to hear, er, the C word so often in a American film.

Also having never seen this film before holy cow that was something else! The soundtracks amazing.

Nicolas Cage's performance in this is worth experiencing at least once, but having already watched this during the Year of the Cage, I don't think this is a very good movie and I don't have it in me to watch it again. While not great, I think American Psycho is a better realization of the 1980's yuppies killing people as a metaphor for how they were destroying America theme.

It was oddly refreshing in a sense (English here) - cursing up a storm, and _you're supposed to not like him_, so it just feels like a natural usage, yet so many movies don't go for it.

I also thought the movie was genuinely entertaining - I think there's a point where it crosses a line (around the time they go to the auto shop or the scene with the taxi driver) and starts leaning into it a little too much, but up to that point I thought it was walking that line excellently (_if_ it was done intentionally....).

When they are done the Nick Cage movies, I so want them to do Starship Troopers. I feel that it is just the right amount of cheese and campy with good action for this feature.

I've waited years for Alex to dissect Vampire's Kiss, a film I randomly came across on a weekend afternoon and was entirely unprepared for.

This movie was pretty fantastic. Felt real gross about 2/3 of the way in.

I hope they do The 5th Element once they are done with the Nick Cage movies.

Before: Aw, I gotta set up a Vudu account to watch this? This had better be worth the (minimal) hassle...

After: This was extremely worth the hassle, holy SHIT. Not that it necessarily excuses all the gross tropes it leans all the way into, but wowsers that sure was a movie.

@tragicdeath: American Psycho was indeed a book, though not one I've read as it's apparently much more gruesome than the film.

Thank you Alex! I love your fervor for Nic Cage. Will watch/listen to next week. Lets keep going into Nic Cages weird films please!

Also, quick questions... I can't seem to find it anywhere, but has Alex done Gone in 60 seconds? Also, is there anyway to read the old screened.com content or links to Alex's old Nic Cage blogs?

Honestly if you're not getting in some way fucked up while watching along with these I have to assert that you're doing it wrong.

Hot tip for sober people, Sleep deprivation can be just as good. That's the first way I watched Fear and Loathing and is still by far the most surreal experience I've had wit that Movie.
